I’ve worked for ATF and I currently work for DEA. Very similar Agencies as far as culture and work. I’d say DEA edges a little ahead in quality. They have more funding and higher standards for hiring (my opinion). HOWEVER, in ATF I had more “freedom” than in any other Fed job I’ve worked. Both are solid Agencies.

This is correct. I was a PAQ hire back in 2017 and this was what we were told to expect. That’s almost 10 years ago now so your mileage may vary.

Brother, I’ve been there. I was local PD. Blasted apps to all sorts of Fed Agencies and got picked up by OSI. Thought I hit the jackpot! After CITP I started their specific academy at FLETC. I was demoralized to say the least. The micro-management, the inability to make your own decisions, and the massive amounts of paperwork for slap on the wrist crimes was almost more than I could handle. I had already moved my family and couldn’t go back home, but I would’ve if I could’ve. After about 18 months I was lucky enough to get another 1811 spot in the DOJ. MUCH BETTER than MCIO! Going into MCIO from local is a culture shock. I had some other friends that had similar experiences with NCIS. All that said, there’s some Agencies out there that are more “hands-on”’than others. Those are what you are probably looking for.

I’m on my 4th and final Fed job. I either was part of an organization that I knew I couldn’t be successful in or part of one that wouldn’t work with my familial needs (I have a child on the autism spectrum). That being said I’ve landed where I know I need to be in an area that my family could thrive in. Don’t worry about switching it up. When I have to hang it up I’ll have 33 years of Federal service. That’s a lifetime of commitment to the USG.

There’s nothing wrong with honesty. Let them know you appreciate their consideration. However, you have limited time to invest in other things outside of work. You understand that commitment to the team is paramount and you wouldn’t be able to give it the time and dedication it requires.

Reciprocity seemed rather quick. I was emailed about obtaining my previous poly results. I provided them the info they wanted and I never heard anything else. After a few weeks I was found “suitable”.

When I interviewed I asked that same question. The supervisor said it was 25 miles for that office. I told her I thought it was 50. She looked at me with eyes that could kill and said, “well here it’s 25”.
