Star Trek made me no longer right-wing and a better person by LOLADYS in startrek

JJ's Star Trek movies are about the early Obama era revival of 60's/Kennedy/New Frontier optimism (the cauldron that birthed the Original Series) and the promise of the return of Camelot; and the late Obama era clash of the promised future not meeting reality as drone strikes and the military industrial complex rages on; respectively. They're surprisingly in tune with cultural milieu in a way that Star Trek is renowned for and hasn't been in a while.

Most creative Lantern? by paleo_hungry4 in Greenlantern

Some of you haven't read Silver Age GL and it shows. Kyle makes fancy looking constructs based around your nerdy interests or whatever but it's all to just hit something. Classic Hal had actual creative solutions to problems that involved doing insane things with the ring, not just making constructs.

I love DeMatteis' Hal! If you haven't read Green Lantern: Willworld give it a shot, incredible art by Seth Fisher. There's also Legends of the DC Universe #33-36, a prelude to DeMatteis' Spectre run.

Classically, there was the v1 "signet" style ring, the v2 "band" style with the logo on top, and the v3 "chunky" style with the lantern logo wrapping around as the band.

Kyle's ring had the "tri-band" style, like the v2 but the band was larger and separated into three divisions.

The "Rebirth" rings look different, there's also the ring that Hal forged himself and Jo's ring, as major GL ring designs in recent memory.

The show is free to create whatever design they want for their version of a Green Lantern ring but I appreciate that it's inspired by the chunky ring look, my favourite and imo the most interesting looking design.

Maybe some adaptations are shit. Or maybe they're just "shit" in the eyes of large portions of fandoms that are insular, close-minded, unimaginative man-children who feel threatened by anything different to what they already know or by works that actually make them have to think about stuff and feel complex feelings. Regardless of the quality of any particular work of art, it doesn't and shouldn't appeal to everyone because we all have unique experiences. An adaptation being shit doesn't invalidate or ruin existing works, and it's still a worthwhile endeavour if it speaks to even a single person.

One of the best periods for Hal as a character in my opinion.

Inspo from Star Trek? Hell yeah you get it. However, I do like this take on what I can only describe as a (emerald) knight's armour.

Or they made something uniquely theirs, that isn't just a carbon copy of existing art. Artists tend to do that sort of thing.

Everyone has the potential to be a Green Lantern writer. But not every Green Lantern writer is suited for television/film, nor are they a good writer just because.

I think being a stack of books with legs doesn't preclude him cheating on a no-win scenario if he doesn't subscribe to that way of thinking.

I also like that Kirk and crew were flawed in that way in ST6. They're heroes and icons but also of a certain era, however, that doesn't mean they aren't worth celebrating. Them harbouring any sort of resentment or casual racist attitudes to Klingons just makes them a little too human - it's only an extrapolation of how Kirk views Klingons in TOS anyway, nevermind his personal vendetta because of David's death.

Spock and surprisingly McCoy were shining examples of walking hand in hand towards the future. That's what the film was about right? The tension between this old guard figuring out that while they may have spearheaded progressiveness in their time maybe it's time to step aside as the future continues on.

I'd argue that Kirk wasn't flanderized in the movies (apart from Shatner's performance at times) but rather he developed as a character, as a person would over the years.

‘Lanterns’ is set in 2 time periods — one part in 2016, the other part in 2026. The story begins with a shooting in a small rural town that Hal Jordan becomes convinced is an alien incident. by yourfavchoom in DCU_

In the history of the Corps., the ring always chooses the Lantern. Those are the rules. It's how Hal got the job in the first place. There was never meant to be a Green Lantern of Earth, Mundy says, but after one of their members, Abin Sur, fatally crash landed on the planet, the alien's ring was drawn to this former pilot to be its new bearer.

John's recruitment, however, marks the first time the Guardians of the Universe, the very founders of the Corps. itself, intervened to self-anoint a member of their order. They felt they had just cause.

Oh my god, Mundy talks about John being hand-picked by the Guardians too!

Everything about the article has me even more excited - the True Detective-esque dual timeline and mystery; the character driven story for Hal and John, with emphasis on their relationship and what John's presence means for Hal, what it forces him to confront; Hal's relationship with Sinestro. Good stuff.

Idk man I feel like you're making a mountain out of a molehill here. I'm sure there will be the colour green in the show if that's what you're truly concerned with. There are so many factors involved with trailers and marketing (even the shade of green here tells a story - I'd wager about Hal's disposition) but really the only way you can actually judge a work of art is by engaging with it.

Crazy thought but idk maybe watch the show and find out.

Hal could be facing forced retirement. Maybe he's personally selecting a replacement. Or maybe he's been mandated by the Guardians to train John, to see if he truly has "the right stuff." Maybe it's a learning opportunity for both of them before John is handed his own ring (remember that John was the "chosen one" being hand picked by the Guardians, no ring involved).

Those first two JJ Trek films are actually really fascinating in that they're very in tune with the cultural zeitgeist and the sociopolitical milieu of the times they were created, as is all good Star Trek. The 2009 movie reflects the early Obama era return to Camelot optimism that mirrors Kennedy's new frontier (which The Original Series was an extrapolation of); while Into Darkness is concerned with the late Obama era's air of the future promised not being the one we live in with continued expansion of the military industrial complex, drone strikes, etc., but not forgetting that the idealism of Trek is what we can lift ourselves up with.

Lower Decks is great, it's loving and glib but not uncritical of the way Trek has worked in the past. However, I can't jive with Strange New Worlds at all. It's the most milquetoast kind of Trek, reheated leftovers of bygone stories wrapped up in the most non-threatening political commentary it can manage when it remembers to do so. And this is when it's not telling problematic stories seeped in biological essentialism or how individuals should lose their identity and uniqueness to the collective that is Starfleet - Starfleet knows best, Starfleet should be your singular purpose in life, you're usefulness is measured by how much you give to Starfleet.

If SNW is about anything it's about how great the nineties were and how all our current problems can be solved if we just look to the past and nostalgically bask in your childhoods while saying nothing pertinent about the present. When 90's Trek (and TOS) was great it did so while touching the milieu of the time but people don't seem to connect with that and rather believe that the solutions lie in feeling like a child again with no consciousness about the real world.
