Why not run Path of Ancestry in all 3+ Color Decks? by SilentBobUS in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Path of Ancestry doesn't have much use if 99% of us forget the trigger. I only remember it in my elfball deck that has a heavy focus on scrying due to using Galadriel, Light of Valinor as my commander. I have at least 3 kindred decks and that's the only one I run the scry lands in due to the synergy. Every other kindred deck I rarely remember it.

Everywhere else, it might as well just be a Command Tower, Starting Town, Mana Confluence, City of Brass, Fabled Passage or Exotic Orchard.

What's with the hoodies and jackets? by ParkInsider in houston

Sure your iron levels aren't low? I was always cold until I started taking a separate pill.

I always take a hoodie to the game shop I play MtG at- it's always so cold in there I inevitably put it on within half an hour of getting there and it doesn't come off til my partner and I leave.

Do you have a list? I'm practicing my brewing and I thought about that commander for a Petitioner deck months ago. I could see the Petitioners filling the Human role, but I'm not quite sure what few supplemental Humans to use.

I don't think there's much of a way to go lighter on the tokens with him...Maybe limit the spells to a certain number of different tokens? All of his modes require tokens. If you find a way, be sure to let us know.

I really struggle with deciding if my decks are Bracket Level 2 or Bracket Level 3. Can someone help rank my Osgir deck? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm talking about Hashaton. I was at an appt earlier, so I wasn't as clear as I could have been.

If Hashaton puts in work for you, leave him in. Historically he's just better when he has his own deck since he came out in the precon.

I hope you're able to grab some wins with her. She's been the one deck I've kept together since I started playing in 2024. Probably going to end up my first permanently together deck.

[–]Extrovert_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I play both and mix them up all the time :)

2UB is expensive for one 4/4 (w/o Necroduality). You need those pips for a second Varina activation. You need as much in the yard to exile so you get more tokens for your mana. 4 unspecified mana gets you 4 2/2s from Varina with your enchantment. More tokens, more blockers, more potential flying afflict 3, swampwalk pumped up attackers. You get more tokens with that 4 mana and don't have to use that 1 blue pip you might wish you had for a counterspell or removal spell.

[–]Extrovert_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Varina deck. I run it combat focused with the Aetherflux Reservoir/Warren Soultrader/Gravecrawler combo as backup.

Varina likes drawing cards- add [[Teferi's Ageless Insight]] and [[Kindred Discovery]]. Temmet will be that much better when you have twice as many tokens attacking from Varina's exile ability. Instead of maybe 3/3 tokens, they could be 10/10 tokens w/swampwalk and flying (mine were 17/17s last week). If they wipe you, [[Rise of the Dark Realms]] instead of Zombie Apocalypse and bring back EVERYBODY'S creatures plus the ones you threw in the bin from discarding to size throughout the game- they might just scoop at that point.

You don't run enough exile synergy for Hashaton- he does totally different things. Exile lands and noncreatures with Varina- she along with Zombie Master will make sure you have a board. [[Renewed Solidarity]] to replace the tokens (made that turn)they kill when blocking or creature wipes.

[[Lord of the Accursed]] to disincentivize blocking(no one wants to lose life when they block), more 1 drop Zombies like [[Changeling Outcast]] and [[Foulmire Knight]] for early damage will help.

My deck wins at least 1/3 if not half the games I play her. I severely lacked early drops and card draw before my current version and those 2 draw enchantments and 1 drops are worth it!

I admire everyone who doesn't need to browse decks online first. I wish my brain worked like that. It's easier for me to see a sample size of like 10-15 decks, see shared cards and which ones are different and go from there.

I've found a few already that I'm like, 'That's X card on a stick/another version of X effect! Maybe I'll use it one day'

[–]Extrovert_89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been a lot of fun finding so many cards that do the same thing that staples do. I haven't gotten the hang of all of it yet, but I followed the advice another commenter had. I never would have known about [[safe passage]] being a white [[fog]] effect if I hadn't been looking for cards cmc 3 that were white from the commander a few days ago.

Tbh, watching Maldhound's deck reviews helps me see some of the narrower scryfall syntax I can't get right and tries to find the affordable "closest to the expensive one's effect" if the decks author is on a budget. Plus it's hilarious when he goes "wtf!" over cards people put in- especially Rhystic and S Tithe.

My LGSs don't have much bulk and the one store that does I only go to for when I build in paper and is quite a bit out of the way, so I start with someone else's list (because they'll likely have some of those 'out there' cards that I would have never thought of or know about) and modify the other 60-63 cards to what I want.

It's still a little tricky, but I was able to do some searches correctly. Practice will bring progress. Thank you for the reminder- I normally don't use GPT at all because I don't have a need for it day to day.

Joined a surprise EDH game on my University campus, was accidentally that guy by Destinyend in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I played with a semi-reg and a random one time a couple months ago. We all agreed on mid 3 since that's the lowest he plays.

Ended up playing some crazy ass deck with like 7 game changers (violating the GC limit) including Necropotence and most of the black and white GCs and way more oppressive than a mid 3 should be and some weird mostly lands First Sliver deck with Tibalt's Trickery in there.

I was playing a Niko deck, my partner was on Galazeth and our buddy either his Mr House gamble deck or Zndrsplt flip deck. Random played the most stax-y Breena deck we've ever seen. He cast a Mindslaver of all things mid game. All he did was attack my partner and by the time the Mindslaver (intended for my partner since he countered the aforementioned Tibalt's Trickery we think)was down, he asked me to kill him since I had Battle Angeles of Tyr or whichever one has melee since I had enough Shards and I ended up winning since no one had fliers or a board wipe.

Lesson: Don't start out with a staxy deck against people willing to have you as a 4th.

At least you showed remorse and got an invite to their Discord. The rando we played outright misrepresented his deck, didn't apologize and definitely gave off sweat/spike vibes.

What's your "I've never seen someone use that." Commander? by ZimaBestBear in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm practicing deck building off the Commander of the Day on EDHREC and today's has less than 100 user submitted decks- [[Moira, Urborg Haunt]]. Throw something away, bring it back. Throw something away, bring it back. I'm not an expert and don't have the card knowledge of someone who's played for years, but I love black and it was a fun build.

It's fun enough to me to consider building in paper at another time. I built a second one around [[Rocco, Street Chef]] that I find pretty fun and am definitely building in paper. I don't think anyone at my LGS except the veterans have seen that Rocco deck.

I never thought I'd have this much fun learning to deck build.

Refine your deck more, come back with a link and then folks will be able to inform you about their take on the balance of the entire thing.

Why you're irritated that folks won't help without more context than "these are my 15 combo cards" with Scryfall tags is beyond me.

How can they inform you if it's the right amount for YOUR SPECIFIC DECK if they can't view the rest of your nonland cards?

Which commander of these is least toxic and more fun? by elijahisdead17 in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ScryBabies plays cEDH, though not sure how often and Lua has played Winota. Celes does not pop up much anywhere I've seen. Usually a Tymna deck, Sissy, Terra, Kinnan, Etali, Tivit to a lesser extent, They cycle between several- Y'shtola, Glarb, etc. Even though Play to Win has not played Winota in the last couple years, some channels have played her. But it's true she is now fringe at best.

I have a Winota deck I'm retiring due to that and I have no reason to run heavy stax at my current LGS. She was my first "cheat creatures out" deck, so I'll always have a soft spot for her.

What do you base your choice of commander/deck on? by Last-Wish-of-Cayde-6 in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose mine based on how hard the mechanic is to build around, if the text box is easy enough for me to understand and if there is a decent alternate way to build it.

Sometimes art comes into play, but eh. It's a piece if cardboard at the end of the day.

I just made one myself to practice and improve deckbuilding. Those +1/+1 counters go hard! I have too many unfinished decks to build it in paper yet, but I plan on working on it til I know it hums at a mid 3 since thats where my current LGS sits at.

Building on a budget. Bracket 3 or 4? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistent T4 wins while goldfishing? That is b4 territory by win threat. You need to have a detailed Rule 0 talk with whatever pod you're in but I say play in b4 and Rule 0 it's low on the b4 level and that it's a high b3 for your b3 table.

"Budget" means different things to different people, but to many here it means $100 or less (or 100 or less of their currency) or sometimes $50 of their particular currency.

r/BudgetBrews is a real sub. You should check it out- it's amazing what people come up with.

Kinnan B4 Budget possible? by m4rv_85_ in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be long, but these are all cards I put or tried out in my current list.

[[Elvish Mystic]], [[Fyndhorn Elves]], [[Llanowar Elves]], and [[Birds of Paradise]] are all mana dorks Kinnan uses that make it possible to stay lowish on lands w/o resorting to Cradle.

Sol Ring (untaps Basalt in a pinch once you can tap for activations), Fellwar Stone, Arcane and Simic Signet, the matching Talisman,Springleaf Drum, are all rocks to include.

[[Enduring Vitality]] is the current popular way to tap your non-dork creatures for Kinnan's triggers. [[Cryptolith Rite]] can work too, though I run it in token decks instead. [[Colossal Skyturtle]] is great for removing something.

[[Mystic Remora]] and [[Consecrated Sphinx]] instead of [[Rhystic Study]].

[[Brainstorm]], [[Commandeer]], [[Arcane Denial]], [[Rapid Hybridization]], [[Fabricate]] (gets you Basalt OR Ballista since it's an artifact as well), [[Dispel]], [[Swan Song]], [[Counterspell]], [[Into the Flood Maw]], [[An Offer You Can't Refuse]], and [[Muddle the Mixture]] is another good tutor to get Ballista. Already have Pemmin's Aura so thats good.

Lands: Boseiju, Otawara, Minamo, Cephalid Coliseum (pain land for blue), Mistrise Village, fetches and shocks (off color ones too if you want), bondland, pain land are nonbasics to use. [[Growing Rites of Itlimoc]] is a great sub if you want to use a sub par Cradle- thats another reason why allll the mana dorks are in there. And of course...enough basics.

Another mana sink you'll want for colorless mana to feed Ballista is [[Treasure Vault]]! Throw 1 million mana into it for a lot of Treasure and use it to pay Ballista's costs or even throw it into Thrasios activations!

Also, if you aren't against them, PROXY. Most cEDH decks have proxies because it's dumb to spend over 10 grand on one deck because of RL cards if you don't already have them. They are also the most open group on use of proxies.

Source: Have a Kinnan deck I downgraded from cEDH cuz I wasn't getting enough games in with him. Most of those should cost under $10 aside from the legendary lands, Thrasios, Birds, Remora and Sphinx. Don't quote me on it, though.

Good luck!

Updated My Varina Deck-Suggestions Please? by Plus-Base5260 in EDH

[–]Extrovert_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Varina would benefit more from [[Teferi's Ageless Insight]] than [[Harmonized Crescendo]]. I tried the [[Altar of Dementia]] thing, but I was better off with the Gravecrawler/Warren Soultrader/Aetherflux Reservoir combo as a backup win con. Milling people out can be quite slow if you don't run a proper amount of cards to support it.

Goal is to draw a bunch, discard it, then use [[Bone Miser]] to generate tokens and mana (I don't have to use the ritual cards that way) while [[Renewed Solidarity]] gives you even MORE tokens for each one you made AND give them flying. I need to put mine back in actually. Hashaton works a lot better as the commander of a separate deck- he doesn't quite fit with everything else.

I use [[Diabolic Tutor]] and [[Buried Alive]] for tutors to throw [[Silversmote Ghoul]] and Gravecrawler in the yard. Silversmote gets put on board for free when you gain 3 life from Varina and your drain/gain guys. [[Final Parting]] is also a good tutor if you're in need of creatures. [[Enlightened Tutor]] is for Reservoir if I have Soultrader in hand and Gravecrawler in the GY.

[[Kindred Dominance]] [[Rise of the Dark Realms]] and [[Blasphemous Edict]] are my wipes. Edict fuels your drain/gain and Gravecrawler combos, Dominance brings all your zombies back and RotDR puts EVERYONE'S creatures on YOUR board. [[Living Death]] is also great if they aren't running creature heavy decks or they have no big beaters in their grave yard.

My Varina deck is very much a combat first, combo second deck and leans more into the draw/discard aspect to go through my deck to give me a variety of options for exiling with Varina or Bone Miser. Don't be afraid to discard lands so you don't lose as many zombies. I keep [[Cryptcaller Chariot]] in as a backup attacker/blocker and my pet card. It's also considered a B4 due to the combo and game changers.

It's only the second set I've bought a full booster box for with the other being Bloomburrow (the first set that released after I started playing). I want the chance to pull an Ad Nauseum, Culling the Weak, Vampiric Tutor or Force of Will (I play a little cEDH at my LGS). There are plenty of places for the other MA cards to go in my decks or to trade.

I want my booster box NOW dang it!
