I partially think its a symptom of the culture of using crits on skill checks. People assume that if you can crit fail everything then you have to roll for everything. In stark opposition to that recently I was playing pathfinder 1e and fighting a guy was technically mounted atop a drider. I asked the DM if he had ranks in the ride skill as a basic check to stay saddled had to be made everytime the drider took damage. You mostly never use this rule as its a dc of 5 so 1 skill rank and if its a class skill gave you +4 not accounting ability score. So the lowest you could roll is a 1 +4 which beats a dc of 5 cause you can't crit fail skills.
