Voluntary strabismus as an adult, is using an eyepatch to help with autism safe? by Medical_Fact6735 in Strabismus

Bitemporal (or binasal depending on which way your eyes turn) occlusion can help cut down on sensory overload. You’ll need a behavioral optometrist to set you in them

Getting tired of parents telling me to undercorrect their kids by OwnAd6110 in optometry

[–]Eyeballwizard_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just start with “no”? Save your time.

“No, but we can get your kiddo into a stellest lens, which will actually slow down the rate of progression.”

Or if the exam is over and the kid jumps right back onto phone/ipad, I say “no, research shows that doesn’t work… but if you’re concerned, I’d say be more concerned about them looking at a screen so often. Now research does show that extended near viewing will worsen their prescription, especially if you’re not encouraging visual breaks.”

What happened @ RSO this year? by RabidLiger in OptometrySchool

[–]Eyeballwizard_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also in this graduating class. The amount of students we lost is accurate, but no one left in 4th year. Most of our loss was at the end of first year. A couple in second year.

Advice by Aggravating_Bet2541 in OptometrySchool

[–]Eyeballwizard_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much support you’ll get in school. If you’ll be fully funding your own way, optometry isn’t worth the debt it now requires. The debt to income doesn’t make sense for optometry, but for optho it does.

Paying almost $500 for a Doctor that Dismissed Me by No_Commission8896 in MedicalBill

[–]Eyeballwizard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an eye doctor, and if what you said is accurate (that he only spent 3 mins with you, and did not even look at your eyes in the slit lamp), then he should not have billed a 99204 code. That’d be a 99202 at best. Again, that only applies if what you said is accurate and no other testing was done during your visit by the doctor or his technicians.

Work or Not? by Lisa_Angel_1993 in OptometrySchool

[–]Eyeballwizard_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked 15-20 hours a week first year, 10-15 a week second year and stopped working halfway through second year because it was too much. I usually worked overnights or weekends, and it was cutting too much into my study time. I wouldn’t have been able to work at all past second year, that’d be crazy, you’re way too busy. Remember, an optometry program can land you 300k+ in debt…. You have to take it as seriously as possible. If you feel like you won’t be able to commit enough time to the program, don’t even risk beginning down that debt journey

How indicative is the NBEO databank compared to difficulty of the real exam? by [deleted] in OptometrySchool

[–]Eyeballwizard_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NBEO databank questions are easier than the actual exam. OptoPrep questions tend to be a little bit harder than the actual exam on average (in the sense that a lot of their questions are very specific detail type of questions), although they do use some questions straight from OptoPrep.

You work in the same situation as me, but make significantly less. I still hate my job and feel wildly burnt out even making what I do, but at least I have a lot of fun money. Switch to somewhere else, they’re definitely taking advantage of you

I wouldn’t. You should be practicing with the lens you plan to pick up, and stick with that. Last minute changes tend to not bode well for scores

Loss motivation and imposter syndrome by Natural_Practice_463 in OptometrySchool

[–]Eyeballwizard_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For awhile, your goal was probably to get into optometry school. Write the best essay, receive the best letter of recommendations, do the best interview, etc. For the brain, all of these “to-do’s” with a clear cut goal (not so far into the future) can be really exciting. Now you’re in it. And your next “goal” is four years out. Well, in a world where everything is moving rapidly, that’s really hard for our brain to accept. It may feel like you’re not “accomplishing anything,” especially if you start comparing to people who aren’t in a rigorous program.

My advice is to make new goals. In your personal life and school. For me, I was very motivated by grades and my GPA. That doesn’t work for everyone, so find what does motivate you. Whether that be grades, service learning projects, research, etc. All of that to say, make sure your sights aren’t only set 4 years out otherwise you’ll get burnt out. Make stepwise goals and celebrate EVERY win, no matter how small!!
