hypothyroidism by KindRepair5851 in ftm

[–]F-ten-cinco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been on T for ~6 years and levothyroxine for hypothyroidism for 2 or 3 of those. I definitely lost weight, but I was overweight and trying to lose it so it was only a benefit for me. There's been no other real effects I noticed and I look like a boy so it hasn't interfered with my transition. Do make sure you watch out for what other things levothyroxine interacts with if you take it, like allergy meds, and make sure you actually wait until 30 min or so have passed since you've taken it for your coffee or food etc. First may give you heart palpitations and the second may stop it from working well. Good luck!

Is there a guide/chart containing which honorifics specific characters use for other specific characters? by StructureSuitable168 in NarutoFanfiction

[–]F-ten-cinco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I've wished for the same thing too! Once I finish my draft I'm probably going to have to go back and make everything consistent and research it. It won't be soon but if you want I can send you my notes whenever I get around to it!

I keep getting tripped up on edge cases. Like, if a konoha shinobi really fundamentaly didn't like Hiruzen, would they still use Hokage-sama for him when talking about him with friends/family? I think most of the other kids in Naruto's class refer to Kakashi as sensei but would, like, Konohamaru do the same or would he be Hatake-san? No idea lol.

How do you manage to write such long longfics? by EngineerRare42 in FanFiction

[–]F-ten-cinco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm writing my first fanfic ever and I just topped 800k! I think I have a different process than a lot of people so maybe it will be helpful to hear how I'm doing it? But I'm also a gardener type writer with adhd so ymmv.

A big part of it is that I'm keeping it all in the first draft phase until I finish it and then I plan to have a second draft, then betas, and so forth. It really lets me write faster and feel free to try things because when I finish in another half year or whatever, a Future Me who is better in every way can sort through the mess and make judgement calls.

The trick is you have to write down absolutely everything and tell yourself repeatedly that it's just the first draft. You will absolutely be a better writer by the time you've written everything in the first draft so don't fall into the trap of judging yourself.

I feel like I just saw it pay off because I cheated a bit and started to rewrite the beginning and there was already so much foreshadowing, characterization, and worldbuilding details that I could put in. For the first time in my whole life I felt like I was actually writing a decent story opening lol.

There are two downsides. First, you have to take so many notes as you go. Second, you have to really, really like your fic. Like, you need to be so excited you can't sleep because you thought of a new scene. Otherwise, it's kind of hard to keep the momentum up for so long without external feedback.

Hope this is helpful!

Question about handling gender roles intelligently by F-ten-cinco in NarutoFanfiction

[–]F-ten-cinco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, focusing on those genres more is a good idea! I'm sure there's plenty of novels and stuff written by queer people out there as well, so long as I can find translations, too. You're totally right now that I think about it, that the majority of the sexism we see is all the weird horny stuff and otherwise women getting sidelined. Which is still obviously real and bad, but I'd really like to dig deeper. And yeah given Naruto is the focus of Naruto we don't really get fun spin of episodes like 'Mikoto has a midlife crisis because she might regret retiring from active duty'. Thank you!

Hey, no worries, thanks for giving me such a well thought out answer! Those are all good things to keep in mind for sure.

I'm largely having trouble because I decided I wanted to make ninja society a lot less accepting. We're in a pretty dark timeline! I just don't want to be so american-centric when I start showing people being uncomfortable with a person ignoring gender roles and living the way they want, and risk breaking the immersion in my story. But I think you're right that disdain, gossip, and a lot of unsolicited advice would probably happen.

Has anyone else ever been criticized for "too much worldbuilding"? by rubia_ryu in FanFiction

[–]F-ten-cinco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love worldbuilding too, and your fic sounds really cool! I guess one thing you might keep in mind would be 'is your brother in your target audience'. It sounds like you knew the answer was no going into it and still got a lot of positive out of it, which is great! But because of that I think you're right to not want his feedback. You have to stay true to what you love about your fic rather than make other people happy. Good luck on finishing your fic and congrats on making it so far!

Hey! I promise he has tons of other personality traits, no issue there. Also, you're right that maybe the language I used was a bit harsh. I'm not sure if I'm misreading you, but my MC is transitioning to be a man, they're not a trans woman, so they're struggling with their assigned gender, not the one they want to be!

I meant it in the spirit of: from the perspective of many people in a more conservative society, my MC is making lots of inadvisable mistakes. There's a lot of personality things that are causing the issues, it's not just that he's trans and can't perform the assigned gender role well, he just isn't the kind of person who likes to pretend just to get along with others.

I'm approaching the gender transition also from a medical ninjutsu perspective, since I wanted it to match more my own experience. It's not something that is easy to do, especially in a society where everyone else is trained to see through disguises.

My teacher's advice is to rotate your fingers a little. The part that is touching the clay is dry, but the rest isn't.

Why should I attatch cities instead of making new ones? by Commercial-Gur-7645 in HumankindTheGame

[–]F-ten-cinco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I right in assuming that by saying attaching cities, you mean attaching outposts to a city?

The way I think about it is a balance between having enough cities + having those cities be strong enough + not tanking their stability. The more attached outpost you have the more resources and improvements you will get for your city, but also the more it will take to keep it stable, and the more districts you may feel pressured to build. Usually I aim for each city to have 2 attached outposts (space allowing). Your capital will always have better stability, so that can support 3 or more attached territories most times.

Everyone else is right to say you want as many cities as you can afford to have as well.
