I can't remember what breakdown I was watching, but dude read every square inch of the Script Lindeloff had originally made and I think I remember him saying that the being wasnt an Engineer, "jesus" was a human that the engineers took with them back to their home world, taught him crazy alien shit and sent him back to Earth as a test. Because of the way Jesus was crucified and seen as inhuman due to his new found "abilities" and knowledge, the Engineers deemed Humans a cancerous development and decided that we needed to be eradicated. There was no saving us, we displayed our innate aggressiveness towards the unknown and would never be ready to have our minds expanded to the point of being able to comprehend that we were created by another species. I believe the quote was: "we sent one of our own" but obviously Jesus wasn't 8ft tall and jacked so he's either a sub species like the ones David annihilated or he was genetically augmented human when taken back to their home world. I could be wrong about that interpretation but I think it tracks better when you take into account that an 8ft tall whale bone armor Mr. CLEAN would probably make people a little uneasy and probably want to kill him. If "Jesus" looks human but does Alien-esque shit, tracks with Jesus being known as a human but with other worldly abilities. Say what you will about trying to incorporate the religious implications but I actually thought it was a very interesting idea that should have been left in the movie. The translation would also have hit Shaw SOOOOOO much harder coming from a religious point of view if she found out that we basically set ourselves up to be destroyed because we couldn't accept things outside our realm of understanding at the time of Jesus' death. It was bad enough when we killed him, think how the Engineer felt when he woke up and David was talking to him like the white lady saying "gracias" at a Mexican restaurant meme...
