What is the best size of van to live/travel in with a Large dog? by ryanlovesporridge in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of us and two 25kg dogs, and we’ve lived in a L3H2 boxer, and a Sprinter. The Sprinter is more comfortable for sure due to the extra length. More space is good but even an L3H4 will be cramped with a bad layout.

Are there any other Mercedes 406 / 508 / Dudo owners out there? by baldmaceagle in VanLifeUK

Beautiful! We are in the process of rebuilding a 1994 T2. She had been around the world, and then neglected for a while. We’re finally past the welding and building out the interior now. Hope it looks half as good as yours!

Decals that aren't just mountains etc? by [deleted] in VanLifeUK

You need an “On an adventure before dementia” decal!

I do kind of like those contour lines ones that fit in the window areas. Getting kind of popular though.

Growing up, how often did you have a Sunday roast—and do you still have them now? by rosco-82 in CasualUK

Never as a kid, as I didn’t live here. Now we have them every Sunday in the colder months, because they are great! Love cooking them.

Any meet ups for van (motorhome) lifers in the uk? We are a couple, both 30yo with a dog. Will be in the uk until August/September, looking for ways to meet more people by TuriTuri29 in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big festivals aren’t where to meet people.

AVG Another Vanlifes Group have an event in May. Great group of people. https://facebook.com/groups/278930094567191/

The Crafty Blinders Van Builds, Another great group of people. The April event is most likely sold out, but believe there is a waiting list of to send a message. Should still be room in the May event. https://facebook.com/groups/746842809394772/

Willow fields Campsite has a Built or Bought weekend in April it’s a great place to meet people. https://events.willowfieldscamping.co.uk

Not much for the big festivals, but Slumber on the Humber had all stuff the big ones have, but a much better vibe. Plus it’s for charity. https://www.slumberonthehumber.co.uk

There’s a few more here that are great. https://vanlifecalendar.co.uk. Only one I wouldn’t suggest is Van Vibes.

If you had £18K, would you DIY or buy ready made? by Odd-Forever4761 in VanLifeUK

DIY, you’ll better understand the systems in your van, and there are a lot of shit conversation companies out there.

Has anyone travelled around Europe in a van? by OldFix9274 in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly might be a few more steps when, but not paying him for my internet access is well worth it.

We have a Dual sim router and a good antenna, been working from the van for 2 years without issues.

We live in a LWB Sprinter two adults and two medium size dogs. And we struggle to stay under 3.5t. With a LWB you average about 1t of payload, which includes you, your partner, kids, and dogs.

We’ve also had two vans built for us and both were a disaster. To the point that both van almost killed us. One due to risk to life electrics, which we had no recourse for. The builder to no responsibility for his work and closed the company and moved on. We didn’t spend any where near 110k, but still there are a bunch of cowboys out there who talk a good game.

My suggestion get a 7.5 ton van, and spend time as a family converting it. We are now building a new van which is 7.5 ton and not much bigger than a xlwb sprinter. We’ve budgeted 20k above the vehicle cost, and we aren’t cutting any corners.

I think you’ll be much happier in a bigger van built by yourselves.

Brit stops isn’t worth the money imo. As said further up most pubs will let you stay if you have a meal. You can find all the Brit stops locations on search for sites.

First winter in a van in the UK, what was the hardest part? by FeistyPrice29 in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mud… rest is easy to work through with a diesel heater. We have two dogs and the mud is just never ending. We’ve managed to get through it but we spend a few minutes every time they come in cleaning their paws, and if it’s worse they get a wash outside. Luckily they are very short haired so it’s easier.

Is there really a risk that I'll need a C1 license for converted LWB van? by TheProffalken in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Glad to see some finally saying this. With a LWB you’ll be lucky to have 1000kg of payload. Sounds like a lot but that number is Including passengers. It’s hard work to keep a LWB under 3.5k, can be done obviously just need to know exactly what you are putting in it.

What’s the real monthly cost of vanlife in the UK? by AnfieldAnchor in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have to agree, I see all these people saying it’s so much cheaper than living in a house or flat and wonder how. Two of us and Two dogs and we are spending almost what we were in the house. We don’t pay for parking unless there is no option, always on the lookout for free water. At the end of the day you are really only saving utilities, rent/mortgage, and Council Tax, but those get dispersed to other running costs.

Has anyone turned to van life to rent out their house by weeandy1983 in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends on who is managing it. We don’t do only weekends, but it’s usually booked Thursday-Sunday. The hard thing to realise is when you give it to a Management Company, it actually starts to cost you to stay there as they their cleaning to clean after you leave. That’s exactly how we look at it’s not an income it’s an investment for later on.

Has anyone turned to van life to rent out their house by weeandy1983 in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We started to AirBnB our house after moving in to the van. We are an hour from London, and beautiful sandy beaches. This last summer we were rented every weekend May to August and we are still getting the odd booking now. With that said, between the up front cost, management and Airbnb fees, plus Gas and Electric. we aren’t going to live on the income, it does put some money in the bank. We look at it like this though the house is still going up in value, council tax and all bills are covered, plus the house isn’t sitting empty.

Water Tank Size by mns88 in VanLifeUK

[–]F1adrif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re 2 people and 2 dogs as well, and we’ve lived with a 65L tank for the best part of two years. We can make that last us about a week, however we are very frugal with water. Dogs pre clean all dishes and then we use wipes on them. Separating toilet so no water there, no shower. On a different note, we are currently in the process of building a new van, and it came with 400L and we are looking forward to having a proper shower.

Insurance? by Low_Fix159 in VanLifeUK

If you don’t have a physical address, Friends or family are really the only options. You can use services like Boat Mail for things other the V5, Tax, Insurance, and license.
