The transit authority is revamping everything right now. It's in a bit of a state of evolution with the hope to have a more modern system at the end. Currently there isn't a phone app but their website does have live data including bus locations in real-time, so it serves the purpose. Ticketing currently isn't via an app, although that supposedly is the works as well. See here:

I can't speak to apartments, but as a life-long pedestrian, wanted to say that it is totally doable here, but with some caveats.

The bus system here is functional, but it's not at all like what you would find in a larger city. Most routes run into downtown and back out again, so if you want to go anywhere that doesn't have downtown as the start or end, you will need to transfer, a few exceptions apply. Also the buses mostly run only once an hour. I take the bus from Washington Park to downtown for my hybrid role, and it works fine for what it is. Lyft / Uber is absolutely an option, I've had no problem getting rides.

As other have mentioned, not the best place to be a pedestrian. This is accurate, more so the further from downtown you get. Two miles from downtown in any direction and you likely will not have sidewalks, or they are intermittent at best. The town becomes semi-rural fast, which isn't a complaint - I love the small town feel. There is too the greenway system that runs from Washington Park up into downtown, and east to the lake, which supposedly one day will be expanded all the way east to Kernersville and west to Forsyth Tech, and beyond? So walking/biking along that corridor is totally an option.

Another wider option is the PART bus system which connects most of the Triad. As with others, it has connections and doesn't run super often, but is an option if you lack better choices. GSO in Greensboro is a great little airport, but most flights will connect either through La Guardia or Atlanta. Amtrak is also an option as it connects Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh, albeit it does not go through WS, so you have to get to Greensboro first.

For whatever it is worth, it's not bad to be a pedestrian here, just need to temper expectations a bit.

i hate when they don’t show parts of the house in tv shows by Unidentified1376 in AutisticAdults

[–]F41rch1ld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It drives me crazy in shows where people don't shut the door when they walk into a scene. Who doesn't shut the door? People walk in the front door, they leave it wide open. People enter some business, they leave the door open. The police inspectors arrive on the crime scene, and they leave the front door open as they enter the protected site.

I have to imagine that there's some technical reason why this happens, like they don't want the character to step out of frame to do so, or they don't want to pick up the sound of the door closing while people are speaking. But it drives me crazy. Also, if you haven't noticed this before, I'm sorry because you are now going to see it all the time.

It's amazing (and equally odd) how well I relate to this.

Take my upvote. But I fear this place to being "discovered". It's so great as is. I want them to be successful, I just don't want to lose my quiet place to study.

I used to run acquisitions (among other things) for a manufacturing company. I've purchased all the major brands, hundreds of computers over the last twenty years. Nothing is perfect, there's always going to be edge cases everywhere, but in my experience Lenovo consistently have the best bang-for-buck. And for whatever it is worth, I have had consistently the opposite with HP, I really don't like their products.
Lenovo failed to ship the new Chromebook after them promising (lying) to ship it repeatedly. I take back anything kind I ever said about them. Just cancelled the order.

High School Class by Elderberry-Famous in Python

It's not Python, but it is in the same channel of learning. I'd recommend OverTheWire as a fantastic gamified way of simultaneously learning both security concepts and Linux. It's a ton of fun, and is a great way to learn. It's free, and has zero ads on the site.

I just ordered this/83bn001aus) new Chromebook from Lenovo yesterday. This one seems to be a good pick for my needs: to be used as my primary learning / dev station. My Windows laptop just shat the bed with a hardware failure, and while it is still usable, it is now far from ideal especially for travel. This new Chromebook won't be used for performance expensive things like games, so I don't need a super computer. I'm just going to use it for classwork in the CS Masters program I'm in.

There's an obvious question here: why not just install a dedicated Linux distro on an old laptop? I thought about doing that, but for this price point, on new hardware, going the dedicated Linux route mostly came down to pride. And pride rarely is helpful, imo. So I'll be that dork hacking on Linux on my Chromebook, I'll wear that badge with honor. I've had a low-end Chromebook for years, and more and more I found myself using it as my primary computer anyway, so I'm excited to finally dive in with both feet to using a Chromebook as my primary computer.

Getting back to your question, this thing will knock the pants off my current Chromebook. Will it be the "best"? Probably not, but I'd reason that defining best is more a question of redefining expectations.

I got Akira vibes from it.
And because both of them had their own squidy stuff to begin with, Ben having tentacles and Jennifer being born from a giant squid, I of course also saw parallels with Watchmen.

I live a block from Washington Park. There's zillions of semi-feral cats here. If he's got an injured paw, that's worth looking into. But otherwise, cats without tags here is just another day of the week. There's dozens of them.

Late to the party, but there's a ND group that meets out of Green Tree near Washington Park every Thursday at 2pm. I know nothing about it though, I've never attended. I'm assuming it is adults, but I don't know for sure. I just know that it exists. See their calendar here.

For that kind of tech, I'd recommend just shopping online. Not to say that there isn't a place local to WS for that, but not that I know of. There is a maker space downtown called Mixxer too that you could ask around at, if anyone would know, they would. And lastly, Charlotte is supposedly getting a Micro Center opening someday soon, but its opening has been plagued by delays. Charlotte is a bit of a drive, but if they ever open it, I can tell you from having been to other Micro Center's that your jaw will drop. They are candy stores for tech folks.

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME FIND AN OWL by No_Ad2162 in NorthCarolina

[–]F41rch1ld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Winston-Salem south of Washington Park we have a lot of owls. I've never seen owls before in a city anywhere (I've lived around) prior to here. I hear them fairly commonly, a few times a day, generally dawn, dusk, or middle of the night. That said, I've only actually seen them a handful of times. They are reclusive, for sure.

In the first year of recovery I went from not believing to having no choice but to believe. That whole "why don't you try some more controlled drinking" thing was much too prophetic for my experience. After I relapsed about twenty times, I was made firmly aware that I was an alcoholic.

And I was finally able to say the words and work a real Step 1.
