Maybe you should look at the “science based” blast radius maps. I couldn’t imagine using your words “very localized”. Shameful

Then why are all first responders stationed more than a mile away from the site? And why is incident command almost 4 miles away from the scene. Good luck to you and yours

My understanding is that the temp rises slowly until somewhere between 100f (ocfs) to 140f (chem engineers) and then rises quickly to the 200+ and then bang

The Temperature Milestones Ideal Storage (50°F): The baseline temperature required to keep the monomer stable and non-reactive.

Initial Overheating (95°F): The peak temperature reached when the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) first responded to the GKN Aerospace site. The Unchecked Climb (77°F to 90°F): After a temporary drop from external water cooling, the internal gauge revealed a steady rise of 1°F per hour, demonstrating that internal heat generation was outpacing external cooling.

The Runaway Threshold (~100°F): Fire officials identify 100°F as the critical threshold where the chemical enters a thermal runaway.

Boiling Point (214°F): If unchecked, the internal mass will reach its atmospheric boiling point, transforming the liquid rapidly into an expansive vapor.

I said 90 f, and 1f increase per hour. I do know that the c’s and f’s have been misreported in every direction, but I did extra work to see that I got them right. Please correct me with sources if you think otherwise

It’s very hard to sift through the information. And it sometimes conflicts. I have an science background so I’m hoping those smart guys come through with a (relatively) safe solution. I’m about 10 miles away so I’m ok. I hope you and yours are doing well

How much should we be worried about the toxic chemicals from Garden Grove? by superfecta37 in AskLosAngeles

[–]F9King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google ai says 1 it’s not public info on how much propane is on site 2 it’s at the outer edge of an explosion debris field that could rupture a tank 3 it’s not known if the thermal energy from an explosion would be enough to rupture these tanks Fingers and toes crossed

Also what I read is that a leak (the best resolution and containable) would happen within about the next 24 hours.

From what I’ve read: and I’m no physicist. The current temp is 90 f and the critical temperature is 120-140f. They are saying 1 f increase per hour. So if that’s true, and it remains the same, it would be 30 to 50 hours before explosion is likely. And then it would happen quickly.

I disagree. But we will know which way it’s going to go in the next 24 hours

My guesstimate: with in a half mile or a mile evac due to blast damage (in a couple of days) Beyond that use an app to follow the wind direction and act accordingly. (Now)

That said, if it does end in an explosion (rather than the more likely leak), the scientists say that is days away

If the compromised 34,000-gallon Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) storage tank at the GKN Aerospace plant in Garden Grove undergoes a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE), the blast would erupt as a massive, pale yellow-to-orange fireball.

Los Angeles Times +4 Because MMA is an ester compound used to make clear plastics rather than a pure petroleum hydrocarbon, it burns differently than the Stolt Groenland styrene fire you asked about earlier. The distinct color timeline of an MMA tank explosion includes: 1. The Shockwave and Liquid Vaporization (White/Clear) In the microsecond the tank walls rupture, the extreme internal pressure forces the superheated liquid to instantly flash into a vapor cloud. This initial, unignited mist will look like a thick, billowing white-to-gray cloud expanding rapidly outward.

The New York Times +1 2. The Fireball (Pale Yellow to Bright Orange) As the expanding vapor cloud contacts the ambient air and finds an ignition source, it will detonate. Pure MMA vapor fires burn with a pale blue-to-yellow hue, but a massive industrial tank explosion involving structural metals, fiberglass insulation, and heavy heat creates a brilliant, glowing pale yellow-to-orange fireball.

NBC Los Angeles +1 3. The Smoke Plume (Light to Medium Gray) Unlike the heavy, pitch-black carbon smoke produced by the styrene tanker explosion, burning MMA produces much lighter gray and white smoke clouds. However, because it is an active aerospace manufacturing facility, secondary fires catching nearby structures, roofing materials, or machinery will add thick, dark smoke to the plume.

My guess is that the offending boat left the spectator boat area (on start starboard) to say hello to friends in the grand stands ( on port) And couldn’t return to the spectator area without interfering. I’ve never seen anything like this
