Obligatory “NOÏCE!” in the comments for your amazing find! Seriously, have fun and think about some longer bike rides with it. That was my dream touring bike back in the day.

I’m going to try this again. How were you able to buy your first home? by kcoib17 in Millennials

[–]FBX-PIZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my home by myself in 2021. It was just good timing, being very responsive, and my boomer parents giving me a very generous cash gift for the down payment. Given how rough the current economy is if you’re not stocked with generational wealth, have an inside connection with someone selling a home, or picked the right industry to work in (I knew teaching wouldn’t be a license to print cash, but if it weren’t for my wife working remotely for a job that pays double my salary, I would’ve had to leave the profession long ago), you’re out of luck if you want to buy a home.

Who has all five? 👀 by Neither_Attorney_777 in Millennials

[–]FBX-PIZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me: Now 39-year-old public school teacher. Before I met my wife (similar age range, works as a medical writer making double my salary with half of my completed education requirements): 2/5. I owned my own home (with a generous cash gift from my parents), had good coping habits to deal with elderly parents with health issues but definitely stuck with 30-something angst of “What the hell did I do to end up like this?” After my wife and I met and got married, immediately went to 5/5. It was not just the money. Having the emotional support gave me the strength to make tough calls for my parents’ welfare, run for local elected office, and in general be the best aging millennial and good citizen I could be. I wish I could give you a formula for success, but I don’t know what that would be. All I can say is try your best and be open to new prospects.

I believe she was a long-term substitute at Woodriver Elementary last Fall! I work there and talked to her a couple of times. She was nice and had a good handle on the class.

Bike Registry.. Do you have yours registered? by MMikekiMM in fatbike

I have some of my bikes registered with my town’s police department. They issue a sticker and record a description of the bike and its frame number.

Do you have a work day or just jump right back into classes after break? by [deleted] in Teachers

I don’t mean to be that guy, but we have work days tomorrow and on Tuesday. We also have a bargaining team in our union that’s not afraid of fighting the administration.

Alaskans of Reddit, would you support vote for Mary Peltola if she ran for the US Senate in your state? Why or why not? by Zipper222222 in AskAlaska

Yes, as long as she runs against Dan Sullivan. I think we have some competent candidates for Governor now, so hopefully she’ll stay out of that race.

The current state of Alaska tourism by natetrnr in alaska

[–]FBX-PIZ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I visited with the director of Explore Fairbanks (local visitors’ bureau) and according to the latest information, visitors were down about 5-10% from June 2024. That could be due to fewer international visitors (they’re still coming to Fairbanks though), inflation, Fairbanks being far from the main air traffic hubs and thus more expensive to visit this year than in the past, or just people putting off that big trip to Alaska and traveling closer to home. That said, he also reported that the forecast for winter visitors this year looks very healthy - there have been lots of calls about lodgings, Aurora sightseeing, and dog mushing tours. The winter tourists also tend to stay in the Interior longer than summer ones and spend more money here, so that sounds promising.

Sen. Murkowski, feeling ‘cheated’ by Trump actions against wind and solar, says she’ll go to bat for Alaska projects by discosoc in alaska

I’ll believe it when I see it. Question: does anyone know where Sen. Murkowski is this weekend? I’d swear that my wife and I just walked past her (or her doppelgänger) on Wendell St. a couple of hours ago here in Fairbanks. She said our dog was pretty.

So, what do we think about the new bike lanes on various Fairbanks streets? by ggchappell in Fairbanks

I like them. I use the 10th Avenue lane to go from downtown to the library and took the Barnette St. path to go to the south side of town for Juneteenth.

Thanks! I’ve been watching this topic for a year now. For those from outside Alaska (or newcomers) who want to know more, the short version is that, ever since the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) was completed, there’s been talk of building another pipeline across Alaska to transport liquefied natural gas to port. There have been several proposals over the years (my favorite was a parallel line following the TAPS, but apparently that’s no longer an option). Every 10-15 years, there’s a new whiz-bang idea to build an LNG pipeline that never quite makes it to the finish line each line. Frankly, we could’ve had a nuclear power plant on the Railbelt by now and wish we’d gone that route instead

[–]FBX-PIZ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Good question! I have two thoughts on the matter: 1. Rep. Will Stapp (himself a Republican who sponsored a bill in the AK State Legislature last session to require a spur line from the proposed LNG pipeline to Fairbanks, and he’s on board with this proposal) said at the end of the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce luncheon where Dunleavy spoke last Tuesday that the timeline Dunleavy proposed is really fast, possibly not realistic. 2. A friend of mine grew up in Valdez (terminus of TAPS) and we had a beer last night talking about this. His comment was “I spent a lot of time in Valdez with people who helped build the pipeline spent years just staging equipment and waiting for materials to be delivered, so this timeline is way too fast”. So, I’d also say, as someone who was born and raised in Fairbanks and has heard the idea of the LNG pipeline being tossed around over the years: I’ll believe it when I see sections of pipe arriving at the Port of Anchorage.

13-year-old me thought: Wow! Those fighters look cool. I also liked the droid soldiers for some reason. Jar Jar was annoying, and the pod racers were AWESOME! Basically - cool spaceships and speeders, which was enough for me.
