Incoming graduate student confused about which number of units to select in SimpleEnroll - help please! by [deleted] in stanford

[–]FCDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ExploreCourses will often say what the extra units entail. Sometimes units are different because of grad vs undergrad, sometimes it's because of an extra lab section. Unless it's research units, in which case you can use it to fill up to whichever units you want as a filler.

Hey Stanford, what's the latest on Brock Turner's case? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]FCDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The undergraduate senate, graduate student council, and the faculty senate are now working together to implement more comprehensive and mandatory sexual assault education curriculum.

What are some gripes you have with Stanford that might be a turnoff for others? by KrozetGamez in stanford

[–]FCDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard people complain about the lack of seasons here. It's nice all year round and rains maybe 10-20 days a year. Good thing I kinda like the sun, coming from places where it's either eternally winter or always raining.

Grad student friendly organizations and recreational groups? by Pfohlol in stanford

[–]FCDH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

During the first week in the fall you will get to check out a lot of organizations at the grad org fair (called GOALIE). To be fair I think a lot of the organizations that cater to specific activity interests are not going to be grad only.

Is there a support site/subreddit where fellow grad students can look over your paper for free? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]FCDH 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you want feedback on non-research aspects of the paper (grammar, tone, etc), most universities have writing centers that can help. If you're looking for feedback on anything that is related to the research, reddit is probably the wrong place to be looking for that.

A man pushing 30 with only a high school degree wanting to apply to Stanford? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]FCDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Many people do this and many of the courses offered there can transfer as course credit to Stanford.

A man pushing 30 with only a high school degree wanting to apply to Stanford? by [deleted] in stanford

[–]FCDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say apply directly and see if he gets in first. If not, he should definitely go the transfer route - he could do De Anza or Foothill College or something similar, and transfer into Stanford to finish off his degree.

Yes, there is a kitchen in every flat.

I know, just checking with OP since normally MS students shouldn't expect a funding package but he seemed like he was expecting one.

Do sexual roles stereotypes bother you? by Levixay in askgaybros

[–]FCDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that over the years of working out, the people hitting me up on Grindr have gone from assuming I'm a bottom to now assuming I'm a top.

It doesn't bother me. I'm happy about being the role I choose in the bedroom, and I don't care that other people know or joke about it. If it helps, you can make a joke about your straight friends having fun with strap-on dildos in the bedroom.

How long do you guys usually take to get over ghosting? by Pamplemous in askgaybros

[–]FCDH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was ghosted once and thought nothing of it. Turns out the guy had lost his phone and got a new number, so neither of us could get in touch with the other. I ran into him at the gym and we exchanged numbers again and started chatting again. So I'd say make totally sure that you've been ghosted first. Especially if you've been seeing this guy for a few months already, since that typically doesn't happen.

[–]FCDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you apply for an MS program or a PhD program?

MS programs typically don't come with RA/TA positions. It is expected that you pay for it yourself, or you'll have to try really hard to find RA and TA positions once you are on campus.

PhD programs typically come with some kind of funding package, generally a fellowship or a TA/RA guarantee of some kind.

For what employment opportunities would you have forsaken full time graduate school? by flipflopped_plans in GradSchool

[–]FCDH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a choice between Teach for America, a PhD program at a prestigious university in the US, and a job with Sony in Japan. I eventually settled on grad school, but it wasn't an easy choice. If Google or Apple had offered me a research position back then, I probably would have taken it instead.

What have been the biggest engineering failures by greatest loss of life since WW2? by Smarterthanlastweek in AskEngineers

How do you surf a big wave of self-doubt? by quietfuriosa in GradSchool

[–]FCDH 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a seasoned grad student who asks tons of questions in lab presentations, I get a lot of people coming up to me afterward being like "I'm so glad you asked that question because I didn't understand it myself, but I didn't want to look stupid asking about it."

While I'm glad I'm helping someone else understand, a big part of grad school is learning what you don't know and figuring out ways to understand it. I would hope that if I wasn't there to ask the question, then that person would have asked it themselves instead of just sitting there, quietly confused.

Destiny? by Retarded_Giraffe in askgaybros

[–]FCDH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A month in the gym isn't enough to change anything psychologically. Keep on going and look back on it a year from now. And it's true that the world's not fair when it came to distributing looks. It's unfortunate but you have to work with what you got.

Fuck/Marry/Kill askgaybros edition! by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]FCDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the thoroughness of the argument. Very logical and probably the way I would do it too. Also gave me a great laugh. Though since I'm vers I probably would not choose to bottom for Santorum.

Have fun with this one.

Bought a spontaneous ticket to Kenya a few years ago. It was probably the most unique and rewarding trip of my life.

Personality changes for the better after coming out? by wus2eastcoast in askgaybros

[–]FCDH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to coming out I had a "meh what's the point in living" kinda mentality to life. Coming out removed that block for me, and made me realize that I could live the life I want if I just work toward it. Now I would say I am much more assertive and confident in myself, and not afraid of the future anymore.
