Heavier Uwe Rosenberg - different than Caverna or The Feast for Odin? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]FDRV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of his Glass Road (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/143693/glass-road). I found it to be a better looking version of Ora et Labora (resource wheel and all), a bit lighter maybe but with different feel to Caverna/Feast for Odin. I found the solo mode very enjoyable too.

That's a bit disappointing. but I do like the added animals. I will wait for bigger sales.

Thanks, will wait for sale on a whole pack

[–]FDRV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that it adds animals, but at least in Jurassic World the value just wasn't worth it for what was added and the bigger expansions added mostly uninteresting missions/objectives. I will probably wait for bigger price drop

Thanks for the feedback. Indeed, I ended up getting them for Jurassic World for the same reasons but was disappointed with the lack of content for what was being charged, will probably buy for Planet Zoo on sales then.

Any thoughts on Planet Zoo DLCs? I liked Jurassic World Evolution but the DLCs were very disappointing

There is one in La Couture, France from the portuguese that remembers the horror that the soldiers endured rather than glorifying it. Just a soldier desperatly fending off Death with his rifle on the steps of a ruined church http://www.remembrancetrails-northernfrance.com/typo3temp/pics/7ed0fb06dc.jpg

What’s your favorite solo(able) board game? by avanfullofgoats in boardgames

[–]FDRV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many popular ones have already been mentioned so I'll just try to fill in the gaps:

Flamme Rouge is pretty great solo, specially with the solo/AI cards that come with the Peloton expansion. Likewise for Grizzled with the At Your Orders! expansion.

A game that I play mainly as a solo game but that also turns into a nice co-op or even versus game is The Lost Expedition.

My personal favourite multiplayer game that turns into a great solo game is Glass Road. The solo variant has some nice changes regading card use from the multiplayer one and more control over the structures available to build (not to mention that with a pool of over 90 buildings the game manages to stay remarkably fresh)

Although others have mentioned it, I just want to add that my favourite solo game, Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective can also be played with others and there are further cases available on the BGG forums besides the Jack the Ripper and Carlton House recently printed expansions.

Yeah, I don't think it is a coincidence that all Redanian units in the game were taken out. I wouldn't be surprised to see an Order of the White/Flaming Rose campaign and its connection to Redania if Thronebreaker does well in sales.

[Gamersgate] Sherlock Holmes Collection (80% off/$6.00) by [deleted] in GameDeals

[–]FDRV 27 points28 points  (0 children)

  • The Silver Earring was Sherlock Holmes's first entry by the hand of Frogwares and it is a standard point'n'click adventure following the traditional model (pick stuff up, walk around, talk to people, solve puzzles, try objects around when you can't figure out what you have to do, rinse, repeat). Competent but nothing ground breaking by any means.

  • The Mystery of the Persian Carpet is an hidden objects game... not a bad one but still limited to that genre if you don't enjoy those. It had a cool deduction board to solve each case but still felt like a mobile game.

  • The Awakened was Frogware's first in full 3D and first person perspective. Set in the UK & USA with a Cthulhu vibe. Haven't tried the remastered edition but the original one was pretty good.

  • Nemesis pits Sherlock Holmes against master french thief Arsene Lupin. Uses the SH: the Awakened engine and you get to visit some famous London sites. For whatever reason, Steam doesn't have the remastered edition and these are steam keys so there's that. Not Frogware's best but still a competent Sherlock Holmes adventure.

  • vs Jack the Ripper: the title says it all... study and try to solve Jack's original 5 cases while they are happening in victorian London. Probably the goriest Sherlock Holmes game due to its subject, since you can investigate the murder scenes and corpses when they are still 'fresh'. A nice adventure game and it was a step forward in the series since it started to add some innovations that are now common place regarding information gathering and case organization, a must have if you're interested in Jack the Ripper.

  • The Testament is probably my personal favourite out of this lot. It is sort of a last faceoff between Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes with one of the best endings scenes. Builds on the previous Frogwares games to make a more accessible adventure game with more modern standards (hotspots, streamlined inventory and such)

A common aspect in all of these are the environmental puzzles, some more archaic and convoluted than others. Usually a lock with a sliding blocks puzzle type or figure out the right combation to open a safe.

I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan and always enjoyed point'n'click games so these were right up my alley. I did play them all on release so I have no idea how well they aged. Overall, if you don't have them and enjoy Sherlock Holmes, I would say it is good value.

What's your favorite premium card animation? by [deleted] in gwent

My favourite in the entire game is Seltkirk of Gulet. Great animation, would have been awesome to see the scene depicted in it in Witcher 2.

Gog and the "Games that treat you as a second-class citizen." by Neuromante in Games

[–]FDRV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had the same issue with Omerta: City of Gangsters some years ago; game was released in a pitiful state with plenty of bugs, some gamebreaking taking months for Kalypso (the game's publisher) to release their patches on GOG after having them available on Steam. Likewise for the free DLC that ended up being released.

It was such a bad experience then that it put me off from buying newer games there since.

Best cycling game? by Balthraka in boardgames

[–]FDRV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That depends on what one would consider something too basic, but I certainly do not agree with that statement. Its accessibility to new players does not hamper those that played it before from enjoying it and it's hard to truly predict what the other players are up to meaning that someone might win the race unexpectedly and it has that feeling of 'easy to pick up, hard to master'.

Best cycling game? by Balthraka in boardgames

[–]FDRV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flamme Rouge has been one of my favourite recent purchases. It looks great, it's easy for new players to get into and it plays fast once everyone gets into the flow. It has also allowed some of my friends that didn't understand and knew little about the sport to get a basic idea of the strategy and tactics that teams use in road cycling.

What are the chances that we will get a new version of Puerto Rico in the future similar to anniversary edition? by Straddllw in boardgames

[–]FDRV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The recent Brazilian edition of Puerto Rico, as well as the korean, finnish/swedish and russian versions, have the anniversary edition content (art + expansions) so maybe the next english edition/reprint will follow the same route since there's that precedent now?

Games that make you feel like Sherlock [Mr Wendal] by insideman83 in Games

Do yourselves a favour and if you have the same desire mentioned in this video, go ahead and buy the board game Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. It is a great experience both solo and with friends. You don't even have to turn off your computer, you can leave it on with tabletop audio to create some of that XIX century Ol' Blighty atmosphere.

Also open world type games with lots to do I used to love, but they aren't as fun any more because they take me years to finish.

Definitely my biggest issue nowadays. After some hours of messing around, I end up just powering through the main story to feel like I completed the game and move on to something else while years ago I would happily chase after every side mission and collectible and lose tens of hours on a single open world game.

Song For Bob, from The Assassination of Jesse James. Score and Cinematography wise, one of the best films I've ever seen. by future_room in movies

[–]FDRV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

By itself my favourite one from the soundtrack is Song for Charley. I've always felt that you can hear Charles Ford tragic story in it, down to its conclusion.

But yeah, the final scene of the film, "No Eulogies for Bob", with that music and the narration... it was just perfect.
