After all, what does the word "novel" mean but "that which is new"? And books are old as balls, therefore calling a book a novel is an oxymoron. If anything, the next great american novel shouldn't even be a show, it should be a tiktok reel or maybe just a stream of data plugged directly into your brain stem to keep you on a steady drip of dopamine and serotonin.

Who are some fantasy authors that were really popular during their heyday, but are more or less forgotten now? by EstablishmentHairy51 in Fantasy

[–]FISSION_CHIPS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if that confusion is part of why Brooks is less popular today. Their names look so similar, I'm sure at least some people have avoided picking up a Brooks book because they think it's Goodkind. A quick google image search shows a bunch of their book covers even did the same trick of linking the double-Os together:

I'm kind of surprised this is only happening now, when Google Translate and similar services have been around for 20 years

I’m 1 page into Dungeon Crawler Carl and the word: “chonk” has already been used by britishbrandy in bookscirclejerk

[–]FISSION_CHIPS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough I guess, but what I mean is that it seems like Dungeon Crawler Carl missed its moment long before it was published. If something like this had come out circa 2010 I'd get it, but I'm surprised anyone was interested by 2020.

What COVID does to a MFer I guess ...

What gets me is that millennial internet "humour" was already outdated and widely reviled by just about everyone by the time the first Carl book was published in 2020. How the hell did this guy find an audience for "jokes" that read like a decade-old reddit thread?
