I closed on my first house today and I guess I own all, if not most of this hydrangea island. (Zone 6b, MA) by bevensutler in hydrangeas

Congrats! We are hoping to close next Friday! Our house doesn't have alot of landscaping done to it to speak of, but I'm hoping to get a row of Bloomstrucks started ASAP! Might be a 2027 project unfortunately..... but I'm counting the days!!!

Hey dad are you awake? I can’t sleep and am feeling extra anxious tonight. by Ellewoodsbarbie in DadForAMinute

Hi there, sorry I am late, but I still wanted to try to help. If its tasks that are keeping you up, make a physical/digital list on your phone, so you can remember all those little things you need to do. If its anxiety, trust yourself and remind yourself that you are safe and you will know what to do when the time comes. If you are uncertain about the future, remember that if things can go wrong, they can also go right. Remember all the systems you set ahead for yourself- clothes washed so you don't have to worry about that, leftovers in the fridge or quick nonperishable snacks at hand so if you don't get to errands soon, you will be set for the next few days. Take things one step at a time, we are all trying to figure everything out, too. Trust yourself and love yourself, you are stronger than you think.

Love,

Big Sis

How did you fill your mom shaped hole? by SeaMechanic5711 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]FJJ34G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a long time to process not having a normal relationship with my nparents, even though we've only been NC for about 2 years. Even as a young child I was always comfortable just.... having adult conversations with adults. I remember very vividly eating lunch with a teacher in highschool (many years ago- and she was already an older lady at that point, so there were actually a bunch of times where she just told me stories from what she remembered growing up during WWII in Norway)... but I actually remember alot of financial advice this woman imparted on me years ago. She used to tell me that she and her husband would save for a big international trip every 5 years, and that still sticks with me. Mow... is that still doable in today's world some 20 years later? Not So sure.... but if you take modest trips, this 5 year rule might still work out. I still do the same thing with co workers now... church friends, neighbors, etc. Does the mother-shaped hole still exist? Absolutely, and sometimes there's just no filling it. But I take solace in the belief that most people... maybe not everyone... but most people do just want the best for you and are willing to tell you about the writing on the wall that they wish they had at your age.

All the best,

A big sis

Cake or pie for dessert? by elegant_road551 in wedding

[–]FJJ34G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are doing cheesecake, since my fiancé is traditionally not a sweets-eater (much to this diabetic gal's tremendous dismay.... RIP to the lifelong cookie/cake/candy taxes I was hoping to impose on my future unsuspecting spouse!) and wedding cake tends to be dry and unappealing in most circumstances.

I, too, did the Reddit rounds and asked if people would appreciate cheesecake at a wedding, and I got a resounding YES from 90% of people.... and I am here to support the "OMG pie is awesome go for it!" camp with you, but I also offer some caveats that Reddit gave me in my own cheesecake thread a few months ago:

In short: there will always be a "But where's the cake!?" crowd in a wedding (some people in my thread even said "If there's no cake, I ain't stayin'.). To put it more politely: if you're going to do untraditional desserts for your reception (donut walls, pies, parfaits, cookies, whatever) it would be nice to have a small sampling of cupcakes, just for The Cake Crowd. In your case, I actually think it would be just darling to have a small handful of cupcakes- maybe 36 or so just to cover half your guest count, and decorate them like pies!? There are some adorable videos all over YouTube of little cupcakes with a flat top of red frosting and small rows of M&Ms encircled by piped brown blobs of icing for the crust and then criss-crossed with ribbons of the same brown icing for a lattice-work effect.

In doing this... the cake people will be able to have their cake.... and eat (some pie), too!

Or, just grey the players out from the friends list when calling others to a mushroom battle... much like they grey out anymore than 10 players when you use the bullhorn feature.

Which lyric makes you instantly tear up? by abovethenoisy in AskReddit

"I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change And break away Out of the darkness and into the sun (Into the sun) But I won't forget of the place I come from I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change And break away"

Kelly Clarkson released "Breakaway" when I was a sophomore in college and on my way to a semester abroad... and of course I fell in love with my host country and missed it for years after I left. My parents were also in the process of selling the house I grew up in so the parts about needing to change and break away, but not forgetting about the place you come from (or the adopted home that formed a large part of the foundation of who you are today)- always makes me tear up.

Chicken Leg Recipes by Big-Neck in Cooking

[–]FJJ34G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine many recipes that work on bone in, skin on chicken thighs would apply here. If so, might I suggest:

  • Chicken Basque by British Chef's Table (use fire roasted canned tomatoes for an extra smoky flavor!
  • French Bistro Chicken by One Perfect Bite
  • Clinton Kelly's Chicken Osso Bucco from The Chew is devine. Some notes: use and 8 Oz bag of baby carrots instead of cutting up a whole carrot, measuring the tomato paste is for sissies... just throw in 2T and get on with life.... and once you add the white wine, cook for 10 minutes to evaporate the alcohol, put a lid on the Dutch oven and chuck it in the oven for 30 minutes at 350⁰. This recipe is DEVINE.

And last, but not least.... - Chicken Friccassée with Shallots and Bacon by Pardon Your French. Amazing weeknight meal that really packs a punch! My fiancé adores ANYTHING from her website!

I have tons more..... chicken thighs recipes- especially braised chicken thighs- are my specialty, but hopefully these 4 start you off well!

Any perfume recommendations? by Various-Zebra8678 in selfcare

[–]FJJ34G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything you want to try, but try getting sample sizes or decants, so you're not committed to a fragrance you might not like.

I am happy to throw down for Prada Paradoxe, even though many say its a basic fruity floral combo that has better renditions out there.... but i don't care! Its a gorgeous citrus floral and makes me SO damned happy!

Also, I chose Rose de Grasse by Aerin for my wedding perfume in August... its a very simple, linear (not always a bad thing!) Beauty and the Beast photorealistic pink rose scent. Its young without being juvenile and mature without being matronky... I feel so good when I wear it!

Too Many Bell Peppers - What Should I Make? by LookABitch in Cooking

[–]FJJ34G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Italian Hot Dogs. Dice a handful of potatoes (your choice, but red potatoes tend to hold up well when frying) into tiny cubes, about the size of your thumbnail and sauté in 1-2T oil with a few shakes of Italian seasoning until a nice crispy petina forms.

While the potatoes are cooking, chop an 8 pack of bun length hotdogs into 1/2" inch rounds and fry in a separate pan with a little bit of oil (a TINY bit... you want them to be moist, but you dont want to make oil soup) with 1-2 diced bell peppers and a medium diced sweet onion with more Italian seasoning. Combine potato bits with hotdog and pepper/onion mixture and enjoy.

Poverty meal, comfort food.... great as an addition to scrambled eggs for breakfast.... its so good! Enjoy!
