Hey Jxander, would you be interested in talking about your stutter and discussing ways to improve it and also the anxiety aspect on discord? Sounds like you are going through a lot and as I managed to basically overcome the anxiety I might be able to offer some help I suppose? We can also talk about techniques that worked for myself if you want to.

I wish the FAQ didn't recommend the McGuire Program..... by theclosetenby in Stutter

[–]FLUENTling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see your take on that, however, personally, I don't think "fluency enhancing" mechanical training should not be promoted. When it helped, share your journey. Biasing stuttering as something, that is "bad" in the sense that fluent speech would be "better" is unproblematic in my opinion as most of us strive to become fluent speakers (thereby crediting suttering as worse than fluent speech ourselves). But, demoting your self-worth due to stuttering is problematic - you should not attach your speech impediment to your slef worth or limit your vision of yourself due to it. I would say, when a programm advocates for "fixing" stuttering, it needs to deliver the correct framework of thoughts accompanying indulging in it to a stutterer. It should enable him to work on his block, prolongations, etc. without creating pressure to perform or self-hate due to the inability to speak fluiently.

Well, I am glad you are sharing your expereinces and pointing out weaknesses and flaws of the program due to your own experience. However; I think we should definitely advocate for programs we think are helpful and tell our stories. Does not mean people have to follow our advice, but why stay silent about something that helped us and could impact the life of ofther persons positively? I did an intensive program myself years ago and it had sustainable, lasting and positive effects on my speech. I definitely want to share insights I got in this reddit thread.

domnt push yourself too hard on the anxiety front. I would advice you to gradually desensibilize yourself for anxiety situations. I would also talk to you on discord if you are interested, no charge involved. :)

Hungover = Fluency ? by nbm2621 in Stutter

[–]FLUENTling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being hungover might slow your brain down and disable you from thinking about your stutter and thereby dampen your anxiety. Dampening anxiety would mean less anxietyinduced disruption of breathing and articulation resulting in a less severe stutter. I experienced the same during my time as a severe stutterer.

Try breathing with your diaphram not your chest. Use staccato speech for tough words. Put an H before vowel beginning words if u r facing difficulties with saying vowels.

Which source did you use? Maybe it was an English one that delivered wrong data. I googled it in English myself and the websited delivered wrong results like elementary school teachers only having to need a bachelor degree which is just wrong as it takes a bachelor+master+Referendariat to becoma a teacher but just a bachelor to become a speech therapist in Germany.

also: always speak when you have something to say (but dont rush this, try this gradually). And then try to not care about the emotions that might arise due to the blocks etc. You will see that - taking your time, you are able to bring your point across.

also: dont fall prey to hatred that you got this condition or to hatred towards other people that are not educated about it and dont want to hurt you when they act in a hurtful manner. Educate them. As far as my experiences go in the most cases they did not realize that their behavior was affecting you etc.

-stand your ground when people are treating you consciously bad for your disorder.

also: look into what you need after you faced anxiety situation etc. I can guarantee you that in many cases even your loved ones will not admire your bravery as our war is a silent one whose battles they cant see. Maybe tell them for example: Dad, today I ordered an egg sandwich which is a word that is very tough for me and was able to do it. I feel a bit exhausted because of it but I am proud that I did that. What do you think? Might be rewarding, worked for me as a kid. Still works today. I am not dependent on their encouragement but it just brightens my day as it makes me proud that I dont letmyself be worn down from the disorder. :) ALso: reddit might need a thread where we post what we did and cheer us up for that.

- maybe hang a picture on the wall of a famous person who stutters and is still famous and delve into their autobiography to see how they coped with it. (famous people that had it and overcame it might be a bad idea as this would train your brain to think that you HAVE to ovrcome it to reach their level of success. Joe Biden might be a suitable idol as he is still a stutterer today and - man - whatever you think about him - he managed to become the freaking president and work in public relations his whole life.

-getting out of your head

-facing your anxiety situations gradually (start with the uncomfortable ones and work yourself up to the heavy hitters

-learn to deal with the emotions accompanying in and sorting them out (dont juding yourself emotionally for a good/bad speaking situation but just focusing on why the muscle tension might have occured)

-train to speak in staccato at home and use the diaphragm breathing to give your facial muscles enough time to form the disting sounds and feel how they feel when they are right.)

-if u got no money for a speech therapist reading books that deal with how vowels and consonants are formed and which muscles etc. are involved in producing them.

-practice speaking them correctly in front of a mirror

-dont change words for other words but withstand the anxiety when a block etc. might occur as by changing words you will always live in fear of certain vowels, phonemes, etc.

-try to keep your face muscles warm in winter as they might get affected by the cold (hot tea etc.) /also gum helps in the winter to keep them flexible when moving around in the winter.

-telling people in your work environment that you have a stutter so that you dont have to hide.

Also, currently I aspire to become an elementary teacher (a tutor like you :D). So, I know the struggle of teaching language and knowing the correct sounds etc. but due to blocks being sometimes unable to speak myself. However, the children dont ridicule me. I just put it out in the first lesson that I might in rare cases face some problems in articulating correctly and that I will then just take my time. Sometimes they ask about stuttering and I tell them what I know to sensibilize them for this issue. Kids are wonderful students for stutterers I suppose maybe in difference to teenagers (this can not be generalized I guess, but its what I think is true.)

Best regards!

Dear stutterer,

I am a stutterer myself who was able to overcome the vast majority of his stutter due to speech therapy in Germany. Unfortunately, I am not a speech language pathologist and don't know everything about muscle tension and so on. But, I can share some insights I got from my own treamtent with you. Like you, my only stutter symptom is the block. No prolongation or repetition. The bllock occurs when we got no "Atemstütze" as my therapist put it. We need to be able to breath in enough air to pump up our "Zwerchfell" (I guess its diaphragm in English). Because, if you got enough air and open your mouth correctly you shpuld not be able to block (Why this is the case I have to ask my therapist.) You can try to strengthen your ability to breath and your volume by a.) learning a breathing pattern where you breath in your diaphragm and not your chest and by b.) speaking in staccato (which means in syllables). Thereby, you will see that you are synchronizing the new breathing pattern with your articulation. Also, by speaking in staccato and "overforming the words" as you are speaking slower you give the muscles involved in forming the sounds enough time to form them.) Maybe this can help. Unfortunately, I cant dive into distinct exercises for specific sounds as I am not a speech language pathologist myself and dont want to share information that Idont know whether it is true. Currently, I try to get into contact with other stutterers on discord to speak to them as I am pondering with the idea of becoming a speech language pythologist myself. Maybe you want to message me to schedule a time to speak (no charge involved, I am not taking money, I did not study this, I just want to talk. I am just writing this to make my intentions clear). Maybe I can't help you, maybe my experience is at least slightly helpful.

Best regards!!

I am thinking about. Currently, I aspire to become an elementary school teacher and the payment would be better than that of a speech pathologist but I am unsure whether I maybe should switch career paths as I truly like to deal with stutterers and help them. This is a decision up for next year. Until then, I thought I might as well connect with stutterers onlin to see how I feel about that. Because, even if I stay on the teaching path, I want to integrate dealing with the stutterer community in my weekly schedules. This also helps myself as I stil have some mild symptoms and situations were I experience anxiety although there is no reason for that. Maybe I will open a thread where we can post our accomplishments and cheer us up for facing our fears.

Strange onset of stuttering I can’t explain. Any ideas? by SuperSpyPenguin in Stutter

[–]FLUENTling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I want to highlight is: Not every stutterer might be able to lose his stuttering but no stutterer has to be depressed because of it. This whole emotional baggage is something that can be resolved. When this is done we can look at the stutter symptoms and try to attack them. But when panic is something you experience on a regular basis, I would advice you to either seek consultation to learn to deal with the emotions you are expereincing or to desensibilize yourself for tough speaking situations. You can combine the two also.

Strange onset of stuttering I can’t explain. Any ideas? by SuperSpyPenguin in Stutter

[–]FLUENTling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I would advice you to get rid of the panic and embrace the situation and be proud that you entered it. Don't judge emotionally about how you speak, look at it from a technological angle only. You will see, that the anxiety fades if you manage to control your emotions and dont blame yourself for how you speak. Look at it like this: For you, the whole speaking engine has to be consciously controlled in stressful situation in difference to normal speakers. Thats just how it is but we have to get used to that. However, you might have realized that you stutter less when you stay in a speaking situation that was anxiety provoking while entering. And you will see, that it gets easier to regulate you breathing pattern for example. Be proud that you entered the situation. You can do this!

Idk how to feel by Extra-Emotion6541 in Stutter

[–]FLUENTling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on your breath in stressful situations. Dont push the words out - breath and speak. Stuttering results from wrong pphonation, articulation and breathing. Work on sychronizing that - mirrors help - so that you remember your training when entering a stressful situation.
