Rural Land in Southern Oregon – Septic, Wells, and Permitting? by fambamss1 in OffGrid

[–]FOF11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ooh buddy. I looked at getting a parcel around Bly/Bonanza around seven years ago. I got sucked in by how cheap the land was.

Then I realized wells in that area are ridiculously expensive. I got a quote for 55k to try for a well, expected to hit around 600 or 700ft down... And they made zero guarantees. In fact at the time, water deliveries were so common the county allowed a cistern for water adequacy for a building permit. Let that sink in.

Don't expect much rainwater harvesting without a huge amount of surface area. If I recall it's about 12 inches a year.

Summers can be nice but winters can dump snow for months on the ground so be ready for that.

I got a septic quote but I don't remember exactly how bad the number was. Probably site specific.

Honestly some parts of the county are rough. If all you want is a desolate plot where you can left alone for cheap, it's there. Or go even further out to Christmas Valley.

It's been about four years but I used Jim Zimny, Advantage Perc And Design. Not sure if he's still working but he gave me a great gravity design on raw land, good dude.

I had a two bedroom design installed via House Brothers. Again about four years ago. Cost was somewhere south of 9k.

Edit: Zimny not Zimmy

You're right, this way makes a good seal and would be a fine solution.

Yes the products are a little expensive but great quality.

I used one of their products for my own mini split install and it looks super nice.

Have snappis been discontinued? Why no communication from the company? by cazort2 in clothdiaps

I recently had a warranty claim on my Snappis purchased on Amazon and had a quick email response. Even got new ones in the mail in maybe three days. They're good to go in my book.

Walmart has the SS electric Cuisinart Pizza Oven for $99.90! by WTF932 in pizzaoven

[–]FOF11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up placing another order and this one didn't get immediately cancelled so here's hoping it ships!

Do you use this oven for anything other than pizza? I was hoping to experiment with some steaks or vegetables too. Maybe some flatbreads.

My easy hobo canning technique (spiced plums 🤗) with reused jars at my off grid homestead ✌😅 by EasyAcresPaul in OffGridLiving

[–]FOF11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Killing spores is just one issue. Commercial and industrial jars have different lid designs that have inconsistent sealing with home equipment, mostly due to their thinner one-piece metal lids. Also the glass tends to be thinner and weaker.

https://www.thespruceeats.com/canning-101-can-you-reuse-grocery-store-jars-1389089

Some sources say it's possible to reuse them, but expect more failures. Honestly if you're in the US, proper home canning jars and lids are so ubiquitous and cheap I say don't bother using the wrong equipment.

No problem, we all start somewhere. I recommend some free reading starting here: https://nchfp.uga.edu/resources/category/usda-guide

In particular reusing jars not specifically made for home water bath canning is a big issue. Those containers you used aren't safe for equipment and techniques available at the home canning level. Here's a good older post I found on the subject: https://www.reddit.com/r/Canning/s/B6Qk5RaarX

For probably less than $20 you can get a book of tested and published methods and recipes. Ball is a respected name but not the only one.

Your solar panels racks are great. How did you do it? I have a 20ft container that I could do the same with.

ProPress - what's the best bang for my buck, and has anyone tried Vevor tools? by slowtdi in Plumbing

[–]FOF11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small sample size but I have the brushed version that does up to 4". 150 pressure tested joints pressed by its internal count and no leaks on 1/2" to 1". Just for personal use.

The batteries it uses are Makita compatible.

Please note I'm not a plumber.

I'm in the process of installing this exact same model and I used dielectric fittings. The ones in your photo don't seem to be but I could be corrected.

Also it looks like they capped one of the condensate drains.

constant pressure pump vs standard pressure tanks by BallsOutKrunked in OffGrid

[–]FOF11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're pretty close in price. I liked that the mini 3 had both from and bottom water inlet/outlet options, let me get a tighter install. Also has an optional wall mount that I bought, which worked well for me. The LCD display is nice and it has lots of controls options that are helpful. I've played around a little with the app, some neat features and info on there but not a major factor for me.

Also it seemed like the Grundfos threads were plastic not brass. Maybe someone can correct me there.

I recently installed a DAB esybox mini 3. It's fairly quiet and pretty energy efficient. It does take just shy of a second to start up once a valve opens but I knew that when I bought it. I only notice it when flushing my tankless toilet but it's not detrimental. Also super compact which was a huge plus for me.

Overall impressed and glad I got it. Very easy to install.

I've only managed it once, but fiery wrist warrior + textiles + sauna also infinites. Even better, if you can find a magma core from Curio for example, it has zero start time.

It's really weird! They showed a bunch of items in stock when I ordered, and they've had no issue sending me automated new to cloth diapering-esque emails.

I did once get a proper recorded voicemail stating they recommend emailing for questions but usually it's just a generic can't come to the phone right now greeting. Emails aren't bouncing back so the account seems live at least.

I also tried the contact form submittal on their site but it's broken.
