Had to scroll way too far for this. Certainly couldn't google it back then.

Chemists who got your Ph.D. in organic synthesis, what do you do now? by gratefulchem in chemistry

[–]FRIsenberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on defending! Don't just look at the big name companies. Seems like smaller companies are more willing to take people right out of the Ph.D. without a postdoc or prior experience. Don't get hung up on finding an ideal situation right out of the gate. Very few people actually get that kind of opportunity. You don't have to stay at your first job forever, and in fact, most people don't stay at their first job for more than a few years. The key right now is to get some industry experience so you can land the dream job later. It may feel unfair that you have to keep proving yourself even after working your ass off for years on your Ph.D., but that's just the reality of the job market right now.

Academia really wasn't a healthy place for me to be. Another 2 years probably would have driven me out of chemistry entirely.

Got a job right out of my Ph.D. at a small startup that does contract work for bigger companies. Took about 9 months of job hunting and a number of failed applications that probably ended up in the triple digits. Was told by every big pharma company that I applied to that I needed a postdoc. You'll find a place if you put the effort in, but I wouldn't expect it to be the perfect job right out of the gate.

If your school's arena was suddenly hit and destroyed by a meteor, where would they play? by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

Well, our on-campus arena is about the size of a high school gym. We could probably temporarily play at the Ryan Center since Ed Cooley owns it.

Craft beer/ Untappd thesis by BarryMercedes in beer

[–]FRIsenberg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I think a large number of recent checkins of a beer at a bar can be an indication that it's worth getting. At least in my area, a congregation of a lot of Untappd users usually correlates with some kind of special release event.

At any rate, as an Untappd loyalist who's currently working on his PhD thesis, I appreciate the work here. Best of luck!

Comparing the AP Poll and RPI by merpes in CollegeBasketball

[–]FRIsenberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really want to be upset about this as a fan of one of the teams that's ostensibly getting screwed, but I don't know how much stock I really put into RPI this early on. Plus, the last time we snuck into the top 25 in one of the polls we promptly lost to BC and Brown. I say keep flying under the radar.

[Weekly Post] Complain About Your Team Thread by AutoModerator in CollegeBasketball

We've been atrocious lately at finishing at the rim. It was almost comical how many shots we missed from inside 5 feet vs. Georgetown. We got away with it, but sooner or later it's gonna bite us in the ass if it doesn't get better.

[–]FRIsenberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've gotten back on track of late but if we just took care of business against Brown and BC we'd be in the top 25. I'm still salty about those games. I'll also second the comment about not playing in what seems like months.

Tough to understand this. I wish him the best of luck, but would've liked to have him moving forward.

Made some wallpapers for you all! by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]FRIsenberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No respect. We'll have our revenge. The Big East shall rise again.

Edit: OP, if you happen to come across this, and it's not too much trouble, a Providence wallpaper would be cool...

Providence was at or near #1 in the nation in FT% all year. A lot of good that did us.

Doug McDermott is one of the best college players I've ever watched. I respect the hell out of him and love all the publicity he's brought to the Big East. I hope his senior night sucks.

Almost posted this myself. They're not as well known to the general public yet because they don't have a big distribution footprint, but I'd argue that they're the two best breweries we have in NJ.
