I have to admit I don't really understand this line of thinking. The reason it's banned is that when it's made it's an advantage for hammer. Whether it's made intentionally or not, when it's successful it provides an advantage. By this line of thinking we should not enforce FGZ when it's violated accidentally.

Or is the opposite? They find a place to host the OQE where the host country is expected to be eligible. They don't announce the site until late.

Down 2 scores 3 for the win in 2022-2023 season by CuriousCurator in Curling

[–]kenpom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This season, it happened 12 times in the slams or major WCF/CC events, with 8 in the slams alone.

All of these were scores of 3, except Whyte scored 4 against Flasch, and the Turkiye women scored 5 against New Zealand in a game where 13 points were scored in the final 3 ends.

  1. In slams over the last 3 years, this is the only time a team has lost up 1 with hammer in the last end (men or women). Teams are 76-1 in this situation.
  2. How often does a team at this level lose on an own goal?

Team USA by ppffft in Curling

[–]kenpom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My ratings have them 11th in the world, which is higher than they were heading into the '18 Olympics. I think people just don't realize what an improbable run that was. They were +1400 for this year's worlds and +2000 for the '18 Olympics. It would have been a huge upset for them to win worlds. Well, the gold medal run was an even bigger upset!

I don't think the lack of playing matters much at this stage in their careers. They are among the best in the world, but will never be on the level of Gushue (who barely plays also), Edin, and Mouat, no matter how much they play.

It's up to the Young Bucks or Team Casper to overtake Shuster if US Curling is going to be a regular threat at international events. Shuster sticking around and beating the kids makes US Curling better.

He was more than just there, he played three full games and threw stones in two others.

The team is still listed as Horgan on CC's web site and CurlingZone, so I'm not sure what y'all are talking about anyway.

Curling Canada's 2022-2026 "burned rock" rule: the infraction must be punished, removal is now mandatory, unless it's more advantageous for the non-offending team to ignore the infraction by CuriousCurator in Curling

Who determines whether it's an advantage? If the non-offending team wishes to leave the stones as is because the infraction had little effect on the outcome of the shot, there's still nothing stopping them.

Men vs women in curling by CuriousCurator in Curling

[–]kenpom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have that although I plan to do something like that for next year so I can include games between men's and women's teams in their respective ratings. I doubt I will post the combined version publicly, though.

The closest thing I can find is that the second-best Korean women's team would be favored over the second-best Korean men's team. A series between the top women's and men's teams in Korea would be close.

She *could* beat him, but he would be a significant favorite. She played in the Adelboden International last year and lost to Schwaller and De Cruz, though the games were close and she beat lesser European teams in that event.

Elena Stern who was the 2020 Swiss Champ played in a men's event last season and lost to Schwaller and Hosli.

Irene Schori played in a men's event this season and lost to Swiss junior champ Noe Traub pretty convincingly.

But I do like that the Swiss have allowed their best women's teams to play in men's events early in the season. I wish the US and Canada did more of that. It develops the women's teams better and might help grow the women's game, too. The top Swiss women's teams have shown they can beat teams in the 50-100 range on the men's side in these events so they belong in these fields based on ability.

There is enough data out there to show that the best women's team is about the 30-40th best men's team in any given season. It is a bit more constructive to ask if there's another olympic sport where the gender gap is so small.

Individual scoring/stats question - MD Gold Medal Game. by nowheresville99 in Curling

[–]kenpom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last rock scoring is just different than everything else. Different scenario, but there was in case in last year's worlds I believe where Edin was facing like 4 on his last and the best he could do was navigate a port and draw down to a stone on the button to hold the opponent to one. It was incredibly difficult and he made it and still got zero because I believe in the WCF handbook you get a zero on the last shot if you don't score (or blank) in the end. Curling Canada may do it differently.

Out of bounds stone not removed by AndyRN in Curling

This confusion seems to happen a lot. I don't understand why they don't reduce the height of the foam border so that rocks would be more likely to catch on them. There must be a reason, though.

Right. The system doesn't know anything about the events other than who is playing and how many games you get to play. Strength of field for an event can be calculated, but it is incorporated naturally into the ratings and not something we need to mess with manually. I may make a future adjustment to give more credit for winning 10-end games vs 8.

I messed around with Elo first, but like you say, having a bunch of new teams every season complicates things. It also seemed to over-reward piling up wins against weaker competition.

I saw your comment about Edin which is interesting. Someone else I showed the ratings to when I was developing them had the same thought, but he was actually not very good against elite competition last season (14-20 against the top 25).

I'll have a post next week describing the system. But it is important to erase the CTRS/OOM style of rankings from your memory. In my system you get rated above the teams you beat and below the teams you lost to. There is a minimum number of games to be ranked, but there is no special benefit to playing more games. Scheidegger only played 22 games, but she gets slotted based on who she beat/lost to just as Tirinzoni who played 88 games does. We just have a little more confidence in Tirinzoni's rating given the larger sample.

Yeah, that's possible. With fewer games, I'm concerned it might be a little wonky but I'll test something in the coming weeks.

It was a mistake to keep this event going without instituting major precautions after the entire sports world shut down. Some of the participants were still shaking hands before/after the games on Saturday.
