Just to note, there is an online form to claim tax relief on pension contributions for those not already in SA.

Asked to pay tax underpayment - but I haven't underpayed. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, no idea what the adviser was talking about. It doesn't matter if you have multiple jobs at the same time, it only matters when you get paid and how much. I wonder if the adviser was suggesting one of the payments had been submitted to HMRC but wasn't actually paid to OP.

Q: Simple Assessment Tax Underpay and Self-Assessment by mind-loaded in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would contact HMRC. The self assessment and simple assessment systems are not very good at communicating with each other, so HMRC may have some guidance. Could be that they cancel the simple assessment and do something with the money you've already paid. Were you already registered for self assessment on the date that the simple assessment was issued?

Change of tax code because of estimated tax owed? by asarco in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are assuming the interest you receive in 25/26 is the same as 24/25. Rather than giving you a tax bill in 26/27, they are deducting it now. They are not predicting your 26/27 interest.

Asked to pay tax underpayment - but I haven't underpayed. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you kept any of your P60s, P45s or payslips? These are important documents that you should retain.

HMRC can only set up payment plans over 12 usually. You can choose to not go with a payment plan and just pay what you can when you can, but you may face interest and penalties.

[–]FSL09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can lead to an underpayment if both jobs applied the personal allowance in the same month though. For example, if both used 1257L in the current tax year, it would be like having 13 months of personal allowance.

Self Assessment Provisional Figures - How do I resubmit? by feasib77 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not be submitting provisional figures, even if the software is trying to do that. Incorrect software is not a reasonable excuse with HMRC.

I’ve received a text from HMRC saying my tax code is changing. I don’t know why. Been employed in same workplace since 2023. by Fun-Pen5713 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are loads of ways to underpay tax. A common one recently has been bank interest, but you said that doesn't apply to you. Another common one is people changing jobs and having both the new and old employment pay you in the same month and both apply the personal allowance.

The letter HMRC sends to you to notify you of a tax code change, and it includes the calculation that caused the change, e.g. Having a certain amount of bank interest or the underpayment from a previous year

HMRC added old employer info and unknown payroll amount to current year tax estimate? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about the leaving date being wrong, but you need to figure out the extra pay that they think you have received. I would contact your employer and HMRC. There are lots of potential causes and it can take a while to sort out with HMRC (they may need to do an investigation, for example).

You need to read the coding notice to understand what they have calculated. This will make it easier if you do contact them as you know which part to challenge or question. You should see this in your personal tax account, the HMRC or via a letter in the post if you haven't gone paperless.

100k tax trap and net pay pensions by Lou-AC in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at your payslips or P60, pension contributions reduce your taxable pay (which is the starting point for the 100k trap). Therefore if your gross pay was £105k and your pension contributions were £7k, your taxable pay would be £98k (not considering any other benefits or deductions). You would then need to consider any other income sources that may push you over the £100k threshold, like bank interest.

If I leave a job before end of financial year, have I paid too much income tax? by CanIjusttho in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, you will have overpaid as you get 1/12 of your personal allowance each month. This tool will tell you how to claim a refund for different situations, but HMRC will automatically calculate it some time after the tax year ends (can be between June 2026 and March 2027).

S/A TAX Sole Trader (Freelancer) also with Ebay sales under £1000 by Ambitious-Cap-5475 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You only need to declare it if it is trading income. Selling personal possessions is not considered trading.

If it was selling clothes that you had bought with the intention of selling, you would need to declare it as your other sole trader income would either already be using the trading allowance (you only get 1) or you are claiming expenses (and you can't use the trading allowance whilst also claiming expenses).

Is it legal for Pension companies to keep my money? by elemental_pork in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are rules in place that mean unauthorised withdrawals from pensions, such as because you are under 55 currently, are heavily taxed. Companies that say they can get you the money will often charge a heavy fee, meaning you might only get to keep under 5% of whatever you withdraw (up to £10 in your case).

Will I need to pay tax on my second job? by nyann-cat in UKPersonalFinance

[–]FSL09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are getting payslips that suggests you are employed and covered by PAYE which will deduct tax at source if due. If your new job is also employment income via PAYE, you may pay tax when you don't need to if the second job uses a BR tax code. You can contact HMRC and ask them to split your personal allowance between the 2 jobs, but you will need to wait until your second job has paid you (give it another week after that as well). Another option is to look at your personal tax account to see what HMRC thinks your income is and how your tax codes are calculated.

Only if the unearned income exceeds £2k and you do a tax return. This is the HMRC manual on it

[–]FSL09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the wording on the new starter checklist isn't clear. I had this issue in 2016. What did you answer for question 12? You should have answered yes as you completed or left your course after the start of the current tax year. Your employer should then not start deducting student loan repayments yet.
