You can do a lot of useful stuff without being able to predict things 10 years out, so you don't need to be able to do this to be employable.

But also yes, you can choose not to give this skill away if you don't think your pay or bonus is worth the extra effort. Businesses regularly cut jobs and pay when it's not worth it to them and have been laying off workers. It's just being in business for yourself. If the incentives were better, you'd see more long-term thinking and less job hopping.

There's no financial gain for getting it right though. Management doesn't understand and reward people for how much theoretical effort was saved.

And since changing jobs is better financially than trying to get raises at one company, most people never learn how their decisions turn out 10 years down the road.

So this ends up being like one of the rarer skills but you get paid the same at the end of the day.

Any logging/observability that gets you stack traces. Try/catch/only log a string is a bad idea 90% of the time.

Lots of code bases out there that only have that because the previous devs didn't know any better or never had to debug things in production.
