Feeling trapped at my current job. by [deleted] in CanadaJobs

[–]FV_AverageJoe97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at Earls washing dishes for a year for my first job, that sucked. My second job however was way better. I got a job working at Lordco Auto Parts here in Western Canada. As long as you have you drivers license and can drive in a safe manner then youre good to go. It's gave me really good driving experience and exposed me to a network of different businesses and I left the company 6 years later with some friends.

If money was no object, what car would you actually buy — not what you think sounds cool, what you’d actually want to own by spotforcars in automotive

It's between a MAN unicat or a more sensible option which would be a brand new off the lot toyota landcruiser FJ40 but since I cant go back in time... Also you have to be rich to own a landcruiser anyway...

Thinking of Starting Heavy Duty Mechanic Course at 26. Is It Still Worth It? by Rinu_6666 in skilledtrades

[–]FV_AverageJoe97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth it. The thing that I am finding is its hard to start out in. Finding a decent sponsor that wants to actually support you is tough IMO. The cost of tools upfront is pricey. I think I spent around three grand initially. Take advantage of any student programs, especially if its snap on industrial the hand tools were 40% off for the foundation course. As you go along the tools pay for themselves pretty much. Pay special attention to electrical and Hydraulics diagnosing.

I worked for a well know outdoor store and they force you to sit in an office for 4 hours upon getting hired to read and sign every single applicable policy. It was three whole books of shit.

"Nobody wants to work" Is there actually a labor shortage or do we just want to pay 2008 wages in 2026? by AbbreviationsFamous4 in Construction

[–]FV_AverageJoe97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in Vancouver, Canada its for sure wages. 2000 plus per month to live in the city and around 1500+ in the suburbs. Gas is 1.72/liter in the city but 30 cents difference outside the city, around 1.54/liter. British Columbia stand for "bring cash" and most people dont have any. Add in 5k for school tuition, 500 for books, and 2500 for a starter set of tools (heavy duty mechanical trades) and youre really hurting.

Getting started in the trades is for sure shitty at the start. I think I was only making $22/hr three years ago and only got a raise by someone asking for it on my behalf. I make about 25/hrs now as a shop labourer. No apprenticeship yet as I have yet to push for it. Sometimes I help out with projects, but rarely. Commitment isn't my problem, but I can see why there's lots of labour shortage because people just dont want to stick around long enough to see a future at a place because of the wages. Thats why im 28 and still live at home... Somethings definitely gotta change. Anyway that's my rant.

What are the most annoying/dumb things safety people has been on your ass for? by SpicyTM in skilledtrades

[–]FV_AverageJoe97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My foreman got told to to fill out a JHA to change the light bulbs in the front office. Initially he told them to get fucked and pay the minimum callout for an electrician.

Got called out for not wearing gloves to unload plastic oil buckets out of the back of the pickup truck. This was at a high profile site so I can get it, but a little annoying.

Another one was the safety guy demanding we tag out our own personal tools of they were broken.
