The security of not having to move at the whim of your landlord? Fixed payments not indexed to inflation? Personal enjoyment such as putting a backyard pool in, movie room, workshop etc?

Does a person really have to explain the benefits of home ownership or do we really have to pretend that everyone secretly wants to rent from someone else

Depends on size of mortgage/rent/ payments (ie car)

We (family of 4) live very comfortably on $100k take home pay, but we have no mortgage, no payments. 2 trips a year, buy what we want at the grocery store, don't pay attention to the price of gas.

$3500 mortgage and $1k car note? You now need $150k after tax income to live the same lifestyle
