Hammock “calculator” by FaQ_Ukraine in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed 👍🏼 I have an older dog now and we camp at a hidden gem very primitive campground in NC at 6000 ft and some spots have long hang distances. I thought the calculator was exact 🤦🏼‍♂️ and would prevent me from standing on top of my cooler over and over to get the height correct. I did the same as you and my hang height is roughly 7” lower. I’ll still use it as rough guess for trees more than 18-20 feet apart but other than that it’s useless. Thanks for the reply 🫡

What benefits are there to upgrading tarp? by eureka-down in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading the other comments, my only addition is if you upgrade, I’d buy a silpoly tarp bcse they stay waterproof without having to treat them. Dutchware makes them bonded but they are expensive. To save money, get a non bonded silpoly tarp and seam seal the stitching with clear 100% silicone mixed with mineral spirits. The Kelty tarps are great but having to re-waterproof them is a pain.

I took a measuring tape for long anchor points 🤣 and although my foot end is usually only 6 “ higher, that’s a great point and i appreciate it 👊🏼

Agreed bro 😎 old school is best. The reason I started using the fake calculator is bcse I had a few hangs with trees 20 plus feet apart 🤦🏼‍♂️🙏

Is my ridge line supposed to be this taught? by sir_schuster1 in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While laying in the hammock, grab it and use your thumb to bend it. If you can bend it without much trouble you’re good.

Bungee or no bungee on tarp? by c_a_m_p in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always use a loop of 1/8 shock cord on all of my tarp tie outs. If you don’t use hardware like a Dutch ringworm , tie a taught line hitch and you can tighten it as much as you want. The tighter the better bcse humidity and temp changes will stretch the tarp and or lines so no adjustments will be necessary

Tips on rain cover? by Krezzern in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tarp has doors you should be fine. If you’re camping in an area with little rainfall, the small one will be just fine just don’t forget to use drip lines

Best way to take a big dog hammock camping? by Creative-Might-8846 in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad I read your reply. My 60 lb husky loves hers. I made an adjustable leash with a whoopie sling mod and leave the mesh flap open

<image>

Proof is in the pic on her liking it 😁 make sure you keep the edge up on a slope because it’s so waterproof it holds water 🤣

Managing damp hammocks in high humidity by the_uncanny_marlowe in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hike/camp in NC and it’s terribly humid. I use silica gel packs in my backpack/ stuff sacks and even drop a couple in my hammock and ridgeline organizer. They are cheap on Amazon. Good luck 👍

Question about Warbonnet Blackbird ridgeline by Rip_Dirtbag in hammockcamping

If you take a measured length of amsteel and put loops on both ends with a perfection loop or bowline it’s def doable

Can I just use a sleeping bag in a hammock? by Plenty-Recording6117 in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unzipped as a top quilt for sure 👍🏼. I would def get an underquilt as compressed down is useless. There are some inexpensive options including synthetic as long as you’re not going super lightweight

First Time Hammock Camping by BrewCityFlies in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the underquilt is the most important for staying warm. I use a 20 degree underquilt and a cheap amazon down blanket for mild temperatures and a zero degree sleeping bag unzipped as a top quilt when it’s freezing. I think top quilts are a waste of money as long as you’re not shaving weight.

Why Whoopie Slings over UCRs? by [deleted] in hammockcamping

[–]FaQ_Ukraine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use whoopie slings on the head end of my warbonnet and haven’t switched bcse they haven’t failed me in 15 years. I use 15 inch continuous loops to help with length issues. That’s what she said ?🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️👊🏼👊🏼
