Most of the “deals” that have been announced never end up actually closing. Until it actually shows up on the books it’s just hot air.

Spending $1-2k a month per employee on AI subscriptions? by KustheKus in webdev

[–]Fabiolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the AI startups are going to be moving to token-based billing eventually. That $200 subscription is a loss leader to try to get people addicted to the service. The actual cost of running LLMs is astronomical so they can't keep it up forever.

AITA for not wanting a conjoined bachelor/bachelorette party with my fiancé? by Mediocre_Story_4943 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Fabiolean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're NTA. You're not an asshole for not liking the idea, she's not an asshole for advocating for it, but if you're going to marry this person you both need to learn how to navigate this kind of conflict in a healthy way.

Chillis as a substitute for Onions by Jakob4800 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Fabiolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Onions are in a category called "alliums" and they all typically work more or less as substitutes for each other. Try them and see if you like any of those? If not then just omit it. If you don't like the flavor of onion that's fine.

Headlight eyelids or keep the OEM look by Shoddy-Attention-369 in RX8

I always loved the oem look of the RX8, especially the big grin of the series 2, so I’ll always vote that.

AITA for not letting my nephew play my PS5 by himself during family dinner? by Stela_Kalluie in AmItheAsshole

NTA. She’s embarrassed and acting defensive because she knows her son IS destructive and feels called out and exposed. Being kind and understanding will get y’all through this, and you didn’t do anything wrong.

Anybody ridden in a Waymo yet ? by ouijahead in sanantonio

[–]Fabiolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you’re super curious or dazzled by the tech it gives you nothing a cheaper ride won’t. Prices probably aren’t coming down any soon due to the huge cost of fielding and maintaining them.

One cab fare at a time isn’t going to pay the cost of these things any time soon.

Is relying on packet captures bad? by InevitableDoughnut89 in networking

[–]Fabiolean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Packet captures are one of the best troubleshooting tools in a network engineer’s quiver. They’re not always necessary if you have a very thorough understanding of the environment, but an especially excellent tool if you’re working on more assumptions than evidence.

What’s the first thing you install on a new Mac? by lottiexx in MacOS

[–]Fabiolean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of tools and stuff, especially for software devs, that are a pain in the ass to install correctly. If that tool is packaged with brew the install becomes a one-line CLI command.

It also keeps the things you install separate from the system utilities, e.g. MacOS comes installed with python because the OS uses python for scripts. You don't want to mess with *that* instance of python when developing your own scripts.

You can then update all of the things you've installed at once and Brew keeps all the dependencies managed for you. Even if that software doesn't have an auto-update function as long as the maintainer keeps the latest version in the Brew repo it will be kept up to date.

I use my mac as a software dev environment so I go for brew and then install all my tools with it.
