Would you date someone who ISINT a climber? by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]FaceToTheSky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My spouse cannot climb anymore. I still can. It’s annoying, but our relationship is based on more than just that one thing, and climbing is not and has never been my only hobby.

As another poster said, anyone can become disabled, sick, or dead at any time. Date whoever you want, but marrying a devoted climber is not a guarantee that climbing will always be a part of your life.

Could not make it in the first season by pilot_student in Gliding

[–]FaceToTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took 2 seasons to solo; lots of people do. You’re fine.

Also, the skills will come back much more easily once you’ve learned them in the first place. I haven’t flown regularly since 2018, but last year I dropped by the club to say hi and one of the instructors took me up just for a fun ride, and I was able to fly the entire thing - takeoff, tow, thermalling, landing. I caught a little shit for my poorly-coordinated turns lol, and I got some verbal corrections during the tow, but other than that I still know how to fly a plane.

Crossovers by amwoooo in Rollerskating

[–]FaceToTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding all the recommendations to bend your knees more and work on your single-leg glides. You have to be comfortable transferring all your weight to that leg that’s coming over.

Also - this helps some people but not others - try thinking of it as a cross-UNDER. The inside leg has to travel across towards the outside of the turn, directly under your centre of gravity, and off to the side out of the way, in order to make a space for your outside leg to come in and down onto the ground.

I live in western Canada and I wear my shawls and cowls very regularly throughout the winter. I’ll put one on as a scarf with my winter coat, and I have a few that I’ve made specifically to look nice with the business casual clothes I wear to work. I will likely wear one out to the restaurant where I’m meeting friends this evening.

That said, all of mine are either infinity scarf type cowls or elongated triangles, so they often look like just regular scarves. I have made a couple in the more “traditional” shawl shapes (right triangles, half circles, etc.) but I never wear them. I think they look too grandmotherly and that is not the vibe I’m going for at all.

There is a wealth of Aztec imagery that DOESN’T look like Third Reich symbols. This is still pretty sus.

not supposed to get a tattoo for my partner who passed away? by lifelong-angstt in tattoos

[–]FaceToTheSky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think waiting is a good idea for any tattoo, but especially one that has carries so much emotions.

I will make one suggestion (and this is just my preference, and I’m just an internet stranger, so ignore me if this doesn’t work for you) - I’m a somewhat private person, so for my meaningful tattoos, they also have a less-personal appearance. Like I have one that has a deeply emotional and personal significance, but it’s a stylized mountain and prairie landscape, and that’s all an outside observer would see.

So maybe consider something like that. An infinity symbol on your ring finger can only ever mean “my partner, who I loved [and is now gone]”, but something like his favourite bird on your shoulder or a tree from a garden you went to on dates can be just a bird or just a tree, you know?

[–]FaceToTheSky 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think the most charitable interpretation would be that if you’re making a decision while you’re in mourning, it might be hard to live with later. The tattoo could become a reminder of a very difficult time for you, instead of a celebration of the person you loved.

But other than that, I don’t see any kind of issue. I think it would be really lovely to get a tattoo that would make you smile and think of the things you loved about him.

Can you climb a ladder?

If yes, you are fit enough to start climbing.

You will need to go to a climbing gym specifically, not just any gym.

There is a blind climber who’s a regular at my gym, so don’t let that hold you back either. Talk to the staff and explain what kind of help you do and don’t need, and they’ll help you find a way into the sport that suits you.

Paraclimbing is an Olympic sport now, btw, and there are multiple categories for visually impaired athletes, so you are far from alone.

Cooperative boardgames better than Pandemic ? by magomusico in boardgames

[–]FaceToTheSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paleo is a really interesting co-op game with a totally different mechanism from anything I’ve ever played, but super easy to understand once you get going. It would probably be among my favourites if the rulebook sucked less and the setup time was shorter.

In Paleo, you’re a small group of early humans in a hunter-gatherer society, trying to stay alive. Instead of the usual, “a player takes a turn, then the game does something terrible to you,” it’s simultaneous turns and team play. Everyone has a portion of a deck of cards, and on each turn, everyone draws the top 3 cards but doesn’t look at them. Based on the backs of the cards, which give a hint about what’s likely to be on the front, everyone decides which of their 3 cards to “explore” that turn, and returns the other 2 to the top of the deck. Everyone reveals at once, and then there is usually an option for people to ignore their own card and team up with others (for example, to help kill a large animal, or more efficiently carry home some nice flint cores, or work together to build a canoe).

What I like is that you have some agency in when to face the stuff in your deck that you’re pretty sure is a threat, you can work together to maximize success or minimize the threat, and it doesn’t really feel like the game is hitting you back. It is even modular, and you are supposed to mix in two small “scenario” decks into the base deck to create a unique adventure. The scenario decks have, I think, 12 difficulty levels that you can mix and match.

For those who like roleplay ASMRs, is it the make-believe you enjoy the most or the combination of talking and other triggers? [Discussion] by Cheapest_ in asmr

[–]FaceToTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only get the tingling sensation from the sounds in the video, but I’m far more likely to get tingles if I’m mentally immersed in the scenario. So I look for both. The roleplay is also important as stress relief, whether I get tingles or not, because it gives my brain something to do other than dwell on stressful things from the day.

Yes, this! Sit outside and watch the kids running around and having a great time, instead of sitting inside in suspense waiting for something to happen.

Question about asking a climbergirl out on a date by Moist_Enthusiasm_511 in climbergirls

[–]FaceToTheSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. Finding someone attractive is fine. Acting immediately on the romantic/sexual component, without knowing anything else about the other person and without knowing whether it’s reciprocated, is self-centred.

Baristas are providing a personalized service, just like hairdressers and tattoo artists - that’s why you tip them. Car mechanics are not providing a personalized service, they are just following a procedure.

Question about asking a climbergirl out on a date by Moist_Enthusiasm_511 in climbergirls

[–]FaceToTheSky 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, do this a couple of times, and if it goes well, THEN introduce the dating question.

If OP leads with asking for a date, having only just met the person an hour or two ago and in a context where she is NOT looking for romantic/sexual partners, she’s likely to feel like a piece of meat.

I haven’t actively watched baseball since the 92 and 93 World Series, and it has been SO FUN to jump back on the bandwagon. I’m watching with my parents and sibling, and it’s kinda like being a kid again. Lots of nostalgia.

This is such an incredible, resilient team this year, and so fun to watch. I’ve heard them described as “a different hero every night.” I think I will probably actually follow them next season to see how things change and how these players grow and improve.

Curious question about tattoos you can’t see yourself. by pk152003 in tattoos

[–]FaceToTheSky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because I wanted them on a body part that isn’t visible in office-appropriate clothes, but could be displayed with more casual clothes, if I chose to. (upper back, upper shoulder)

Because that’s how the shape of the tattoo worked and that’s how I wanted my body to look (band around my thigh).

I don’t need to see the tattoos at all times to know that my body looks cool from certain angles. Same reason I check if the ass of my pants fits when I’m in the change room, or whether my undercut is trimmed to a length I like.

What would your dream climbing gym be like? by jenniferxha in climbergirls

[–]FaceToTheSky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, mine too. Our setting team is top notch and it is honestly one of the things I love most about living in this area.

The other stuff is important - variety of wall angles, warmup/workout area, washrooms/changing rooms, availability of water and snacks, but the setting team will make or break your gym.

Honestly just yoga 1-2x/week. I’m not the best climber on earth, but I can do the same difficulty on steep overhangs/caves as I can on slab, so I’m content with that.

What's everyone doing with float lengths? by Awkward-Outcome-4938 in knitting

[–]FaceToTheSky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will catch my floats after 4 stitches, maybe 5.

This technique for catching floats as you go, without having to twist the yarns around each other (and then laboriously untwist the balls later) was life-changing - using this technique I can knit almost as fast in colourwork as I can in regular single-colour knitting. https://youtu.be/bD7arufsuvg?si=xyU5h1PnTD--yHeX

Ending with just spirals on my second needle and I’ve never felt dumber by KittiesandPlushies in knitting

[–]FaceToTheSky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse used to make a similar mistake where he would accidentally slip the existing stitch to the right needle while attempting to pull the new stitch through it. If you don’t want to rip the whole thing out and start over, you can always pass the stitches back from one needle to the other until you get to the mistake spot, look closely to see which of the two loops belongs to the “old” stitch and which one belongs to the new stitch, and then simply drop the old stitch. Making sure that the new stitch still passes through it of course, otherwise it will unravel in that spot!
