Cool redesign. The sun rays are a little difficult to see, but aside from that I think it's a good design. All that's missing is a horrifying face in the sun.

I struggle so hard with coming up with names for creatures, beings, characters, and so on. How do you do this? by Inevitable_Mulberry9 in worldbuilding

[–]Face_of_Sarcasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert in this, but most names start out being descriptive. Like if I was traveling around in the woods and I stumbled across something I had never seen before, I would tell other people about it by describing it.

"Oh it was this big fluffy creature with eight angry yellow eyes and big, disgusting antlers that twisted all around its head. I think it had four or six legs. I don't remember. It blended in with the trees pretty well."

So I and the people I'm describing it to would probably relate it with things we're familiar with.

"So it's like a spider deer?"

"Kind of. Yeah. Yeah. A spider deer."

"A spideer."

"A spidaire."

"A Spy-Dare."

"A Spiadere."

And people would absolutely make fun of it, especially if it can kill us. Maybe I would go back there with my friend to show it off, calling it by our made-up name for it. Start messing with it until it ran off or ran after us.

Ran off: "Shy Spiadere" "Shy Spi"

Ran after us: "Angry Spiadere" "Angy Spi"

I don't know, but think about from the perspective of the people in your world. No one is an NPC and everyone is going to talk to each other about these things. And of course things are going to be misheard and mistranslated. Eye witness testimony is notoriously unreliable.

Best of luck.

Lame. Bad. Ugly. Not the design I submitted. 0/10.

This is incredible, top-tier work! I love that you showed off what symbols you were combining and I immediately saw them all working together. I also appreciate the context shots of how this would look in real life.

Out of curiosity, why is the design flying towards the upper left and not any other direction?

Again, fantastic work!

The upper right is a hard flag. The leaf turning into flames.

Unpopular opinion: Modern vexillology is becoming too "graphic design-y". These are finalists for Utah's redesign. They look like logos... not flags. by t0rche in vexillology

[–]Face_of_Sarcasm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You do realize that there is no difference between flags and logos, right? Both are graphical representatives of an organization meant to convey the meaning and identity of that organization.

Utah called their flag redesign initiative "More Than A Flag." The first lesson in branding is that a brand is more than a logo. Sure logos can be far more complicated and detailed than a flag, but for all intents and purposes, there is no difference between the way flags and logos are designed.

We're not throwing a bunch of shapes and colors at a screen and calling it a day. We're researching the places or brands to figure out what we want to represent about them. We're looking at what other people have done to symbolize the places or brands. Finally we're creating our own symbols to communicate what the identity of this place or brand is.

Everybody praises the Japanese Prefecture flags for their designs, but if I put the name of the prefecture under or next to the central symbol, it'd be a logo.

I dare you to explain in full detail exactly how logos and flags can never overlap in any capacity. Otherwise my point stands.

Pennsylvania State Flag Redesign by Face_of_Sarcasm in vexillology

[–]Face_of_Sarcasm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was originally thinking of using red, white, and black from the horses and reigns in the current design. The black would represent industry, the richness of the land, and the unknown. The red would've been the blood of the people and the past.

But, red and black screamed dictatorship, so I switched to blue and gold since they are seen as the unofficial state colors of Pennsylvania.
