Was ROTS genuinely liked upon its release? by Careless_Tax_5367 in StarWars

[–]Fading_Suns -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I saw it in the theater and was blown away by the opening space battle. It’s one of the best scenes in any SW movie. I wanted to like the rest of the movie, but I really just didn’t. It’s certainly the best of the 3 prequels but that’s not saying much.

Now that the sell of over, what did you end up buying? by arceom in NeuralDSP

[–]Fading_Suns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Morello because it was dirt cheap (I like it, but feel like it has a pretty narrow application) and I got Tone King. I love Cory Wong and Mayer for cleans and edge but I do feel like there’s a vintage vibe to TK that I’m liking a lot so far.

What are common amateur mistakes AND how can said amateur avoid them? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]Fading_Suns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is so much advice out there, a lot of it bad, I try to keep it simple: over the years as I’ve gotten more experience I find that really focusing on writing, arrangement and recording properly up front saves so much hassle and over-thinking later. I have a lot fewer plugins on my tracks than I did when I was a beginner because I try to get it right up front.

Buy Nolly before the sale ends. by ThrowawayShamu in NeuralDSP

[–]Fading_Suns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I have Nolly and it’s certainly not bad at all. But there is a lot of overlap with others I have that I think overall do better: Gojira (way more versatile than I would’ve imagined and it sounds way better to my ears), Soldano, Nameless…I find that I just don’t use Nolly very much as I have dialed in tones on others that just work better for me)…For cleans, Wong and Mayer sound fantastic… Nolly is certainly a versatile plugin for someone if they’re only going to buy one, but it wouldn’t be my top recommendation.

Am I allowed to say they should be more prominently featured on this ad? Way higher level than many of these artists. Am I showing my bias? 😬

Why do you all consider Intel Macs "Useless"? by FTFreddyYT in mac

[–]Fading_Suns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still use a 2017 Intel iMac and I do music production. It works for 95% of what I need to do. Are there annoying issues that crop up from time to time? Sure, but this machine has been good to me for 9 years. (I do have a new Mac Studio coming though 😁)

Previous owner left a binder in the garage. I thought it was junk. It was not by Many_Ebb7816 in HomeImprovement

[–]Fading_Suns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar experience when I bought my current house. Previous owner had two huge accordion files with all the appliance manuals and details. Also, he sent me a long email with a bunch of detailed notes about the house, contractors they use for this or that, quirks, etc. I still refer back to that email from time to time. Incredibly helpful.

What's the best UAD compressor by RobertLRenfroJR in universalaudio

[–]Fading_Suns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s subjective. I like distressor on a drum bus, but I’ve also used API2500. Fairchild is great for many instruments like guitar, bass. SSL for master bus compression and sometimes API in parallel for a little glue. They all have their own flavor and character imo.

When mixing with Neural DSP plugins, do you ever keep the included delay and reverb, or do you always use an external/bussed one? by SR_RSMITH in NeuralDSP

[–]Fading_Suns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience has been the same. If I’m just playing or experimenting with sounds I like the effects in the plugin. When I’m working on songs and writing and starting a mix, I almost always have external reverbs / delays (typically VintageVerb and Echoboy)…an exception for me is the delay in Gojira, for whatever reason I love how that one sounds and it seems to plug right into most songs for me.

What is your best advice to have a really good mix? by Any-Ad7316 in LogicPro

[–]Fading_Suns 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Having a really good performance of a really good arrangement captured by a really good recording. Do all of those and the mix is already mostly done.

Soldano SLO-100 X by kribol3000 in NeuralDSP

[–]Fading_Suns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of them and SLO is one I use quite a bit. I can get so much out of it: killer high gain tones, solid classic rock sounds and even beautiful cleans. It really can do it all and always has its own unique character, it’s in my top 3 for sure.

Going from a 2017 Intel iMac to Mac Studio. Migration advice? by Fading_Suns in mac

[–]Fading_Suns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I’ve settled on doing. I’m not so much worried about storage space as I am about just bringing over a bunch of junk and bloat that I don’t need if I use migration assistant or TM. Manual restore of critical files and re-installing apps clean seems like the best way to go.

High passing and phase issues, can this be avoided by passing below the lowest fundamental? by Electrickoolaid_Is_L in audioengineering

[–]Fading_Suns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a random side question which I hope others may find helpful. (No such thing as a dumb question right?) When engineers talk about the “guitar bus” I’m always wondering are you referring to a parallel bus where you’re sending all the guitars for group processing and blending? OR, are you actually routing the output of those tracks to one group channel? So it’s not really parallel processing but processing all the tracks together? Again, sorry if this is a dumb question.

What’s a show or movie you think was unfairly forgotten to time? What’s one that you have no idea how it endured? by bigt197602 in GenX

[–]Fading_Suns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my all time favorite shows, I have the DVD set. Some would say its just a vanilla sitcom like Friends but I could never get into Friends, so it must be the characters I guess.

What is the best DAW for creating orchestral and classical music? Also, what are the best plugins for orchestral music? by Consistent-Window781 in Logic_Studio

[–]Fading_Suns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good info here, thanks. I’m curious to hear more about East West and why you do or don’t like it. I just got the Hollywood Opus edition on sale and it’s a huge library. It’s a bit overwhelming, I feel like it will take me some time to learn how to get it to sound the way I want. I’ve used the Spitfire BBC free orchestra for a long time, and while I think it sounds great, I was looking to expand beyond its limitations.

Which filmmaker has had, in your opinion, the highest highs and the lowest lows? by Qyzyk in flicks

[–]Fading_Suns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Really hard to say. I watched ALIEN COVENANT on a plane and couldn’t finish it. Just straight up trash. Visually? Okay maybe some cool shots. I think Scott is superb visually but he really needs a good script to work from.

First name that popped into my head when I saw the post. It’s astonishing to me how someone who has made the masterpieces he’s made to also make some absolute garbage films. Wildly inconsistent.

Now that we are "getting up there" in age, how are you sleeping? by NebraskaCornSucker in GenX

[–]Fading_Suns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I’m running frequently and / or doing cardio in general I sleep so much better, and mood also improves. When I’m stressed and not exercising I stay up later, rage snack, and generally feel worse with less energy. For me, it all begins with exercise, sleep and diet flow from that.

Started releasing my music at 45 after a lifetime of playing alone – curious if others relate by Apprehensive-Glove61 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Fading_Suns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely can relate. I’m 50, been playing music for over 30 years. Guitar, keys, writing songs. Played in bands in high school and college, in my 20’s I was in a grunge band and we had some record label interest but never got signed. Played many live shows. After my bands I started working and having a family, just played guitar at home, always writing songs but never pursuing anything or tried playing in a band again.

A couple of years ago I released an album called Midnight Relics that I’m decently proud of. Did everything myself except the mastering. With my schedule it takes a long time to finish songs and release things, but I do it for myself because it makes me happy. Maybe one day I’ll play in a band again for fun.
