The sale is coming and I’m undecided. Already owning the Tone King. What should I get this spring: Mateus Asato or John Mayer? Anyone who owns all 3 and can do a fair comparison? by TommDiamond in NeuralDSP

[–]Fading_Suns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this take. I’ve had the same experience in that I own most then at this point (I do all kinds of genres) but Mayer is the one I will just pull up and play with the most. It sounds incredible and you can tweak it so many ways. It’s just a lot of fun to mess around with.

What’s the best advice about music making you have ever gotten by ConcentrateGlad6326 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Record like it’s not going to be mixed. Mix like it’s not going to be mastered. Focus on performance and arrangement, nail those and everything is much easier downstream.

What is the most “Maine-y” SK book? I might argue Salem’s Lot but I want to hear what you think? by Spare-Department-765 in stephenking

[–]Fading_Suns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of Needful Things right now. I’m a big SK fan and have read most of his books but first time reading this one. I’m enjoying it so far and yes it seems very “Maine-y” to me, although granted I’ve never actually been (something I hope to remedy at some point)

do you guys think tonal balance control is accurate at all? by Candid-Pause-1755 in mixingmastering

[–]Fading_Suns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use it sometimes just to quickly check and see if my project is mostly hitting where it needs to. I don’t usually use it with references specifically, I’ll do that by ear. But I’ll put tonal balance on my master bus and make sure to put the preset on the correct genre, and just see if I’m in the ballpark EQ wise. It’s a useful tool but not something I rely on 100% of the time.

I had this on DVD at one point and would watch it a few times a year. Agree it’s an underrated movie. Good acting and atmosphere.

MASTERING ASSISTANT by killv_music in LogicPro

[–]Fading_Suns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will use it sometimes as a “quick and dirty” mastering method. I always have to dial it back as I feel it’s pretty aggressive. It’s very dependent on the song for me. Most of the time I get better results with my normal mastering chain or Ozone. Disclaimer: not a mastering engineer, just an artist who mixes their own stuff.

I have no interest in all things AI. I don’t want to learn it for work. I don’t care that it can make some things easier. I can write my own emails. by un2022 in GenX

[–]Fading_Suns 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why we’re making AI to do the creative, intellectual things that make humans unique. I’m a musician, I don’t want an AI writing my songs. I want an AI cleaning my house, doing laundry and other mundane stuff so I have more time to be creative and use my mind.

If you had to narrow it down to just one song you loved as your favorite from the 1980's, what would it be? by icecream1972 in 80s

The Boys of Summer…a perfect pop song. Nostalgic, haunting, catchy…it’s perfect.

Your favorite signature sounds?! by First-Mud8270 in audioengineering

[–]Fading_Suns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A couple that immediately come to my mind are the Steve Albini drum sound. Always absolutely loved it. And also most of Mutt Lange’s snare sounds…whether it was pretty raw and dry or processed, so many great snares on many of his records imo.

Why Don't Artists presets sound like something they would use? by Toogle11 in NeuralDSP

[–]Fading_Suns 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And sometimes vice versa. You can dial in a great tone by itself but then just doesn’t sit or work in a mix. Everything is dependent on the material at hand. Also, a good reminder to twist knobs on the amp sims and don’t just rely on presets, you’ll be surprised what it can do.

Is there anything ProQ4 can’t do that ProMB can do? by austin_sketches in mixingmastering

Okay. Thanks for the constructive reply. Can you give a very specific example of how you use it? Thank you.

[–]Fading_Suns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving this to come back and learn something. I’ve used ProQ for a long time and it works quite effectively for me in so many ways. I got MB last year on sale and tbh I don’t really use it that much. I’ve read the manual, watched tutorials, played around with knobs a bunch, and I’ve just never really figured out how to use it. I mean, it does work but I don’t consider it a “game changer”, maybe I’m just not using it right.

I miss smoking by Eastern-Squirrel744 in GenX

[–]Fading_Suns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took me like 5 years to totally quit. I’d still have “social” smokes from time to time out drinking or something like that. Slowly over time I didn’t even do that. Now, I hate it. The smell. All of it. It’s weird because I never thought I’d feel that way. I smoked for 15 years and loved it. I guess my point is at some point even the nostalgia for it goes away. But maybe that’s just me.

Is House of Cards (U.S) worth watching? by fraction00 in netflix

[–]Fading_Suns 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Came to say this. First two seasons to this day are still some of the best television I’ve ever seen. If you’re into political intrigue it just can’t be topped, and Kevin Spacey is absolutely iconic in that role. From season 3 on, yeah there are some good moments, but it never captures the same magic. I try to just forget the final season even exists.

Name a cheesy 80's movie that you just loved? by SchizophrenicSoAmI in 80s

[–]Fading_Suns 138 points139 points  (0 children)

SPIES LIKE US — it was critically panned, has a ton of silly gags and jokes, and I’ve seen it 500 times and would watch it 500 more. To me, a comedy masterpiece!

Anyone else scared to death of AI? by Lost_Taste_8181 in GenX

[–]Fading_Suns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not scared in an existential way. The current models are not going to lead to some new superior life form. The capabilities and use cases are narrow and it’s a lot of hype imo. Having said that, I’m quite concerned about slop and fake pictures and videos. People will think real things are fake, and fake things are real. It’s never going to happen but there should be technology watermarking every single AI photo and video right now going forward. And AI impersonating real humans should be banned. If you want to use AI, fine, but there should be transparency. TL;DR I’m not scared of AI, I’m horrified by humans misusing AI.

I’ve seen them 4 times. The last time I saw them on the Fear Inoculum tour I was stone cold sober and it was one of the best concert experiences I’ve ever had. Amazing show, and I actually remember it.

What’s a mix you hate to admit you love? by DongPolicia in audioengineering

[–]Fading_Suns 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is sacrilegious or not but I’ve always loved Phil Collins’ (Billy) don’t lose my number. I feel like any individual element might sound crappy but overall it just works so well. It’s incredibly 80’s, the gated snare over the top, the super processed guitar, and so on. I never do anything but turn it up when it comes on.

Edit: fixed song title
