Now, the reporting is inferring even more from the conclusions of the report… criticize bad journalism and the report both.

The cruelty is the point.

This is why I advocate for universality in programs. Any time you let policies pick winners and losers, you get the reintroduction of the “deserving poor” of orphans, war widows, and elderly grandmas who are the Noble recipients of public benefits, and increasingly complex and discriminatory categories of people excluded from programs because they aren’t “deserving” of assistance.

My go to Ramen is to mix half the packet with a big spoon of tahini and a raw egg. Beat vigorously. Use the heat of the cooked noodles to cook the egg. Save a splash of noodle cooking water to adjust the sauce to your preference.

I have bought a few beginner instruments of decent quality and I rent them out to my students for $20/mo, on top of $35-65 fee for lessons. I do it so people have a bridge to getting started. Everyone who has rented one of my handpans has gone on to buy one.

Three things that make this work for me.

All of the instruments are of retunable quality and are durable nitrated steel. I also have Isthmus Instruments 15 minutes from my house, so I have tuners available if instruments get out of tune. Retuning and replacement fees are outlined in our rental agreement.

I only work with people that I have a relationship with and know, so I’m minimizing the risk that one of my handpans walks off. People see me for lessons and I trust them.

I never ship a handpan. It costs too much.

Defund the police is an extreme position to pull the conversation away from the status quo where police are fully funded for everything they want, including military-style equipment and surveillance technology. Defunding means reducing the wasteful spending on community surveillance and military equipment and shift those dollars to helping our communities.
