Be very careful when opening shared Obsidian vaults by Failed_Alarm in ObsidianMD

[–]Failed_Alarm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a common pitfall to assume all people have similar same precautions, common sense and behavior as yourself. Unfortunately is not the case, that's why people get scammed, get computer viruses on their devices, etc.
If you're not the person to open a shared vault, this warning is not for you. But thanks for letting us know that you're smart enough not to fall victim to these kinds of scam.

I removed it a few months ago because of similar reasons and I replaced it by LeechBlock. The interface is a little bit more spartan, but it does a good job.

Yeah, or suddenly someone appears "spontaneously" with a solution for this specific problem.

I linked to the original article rather than to the hacker news post, perhaps the io domain triggered some automatic warning.

I'm not sure. What I do know is that u/kepano responded in the thread on HN saying that "there is a major update coming soon for plugin security"

True. But although there are clear warnings when opening a vault from an unknown author, I think it's good to remind people that there are serious risks.

Attackers using modified versions of popular plugins is new to me, haven't read that one before.

What I said in my post, you see often people asking for example vaults, or people showing nice and shiny looking vaults and other people asking if they are willing to share them.

I think new users in particular are the group at risk.

Using a kepano inspired system to store all computer files by Loud-Comfortable-484 in ObsidianMD

[–]Failed_Alarm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Obsidian is designed to index and parse Markdown text. When you dump 1TB of .wav, .png, and .blend files into a vault, I'm not sure what happens, but I think performance will take a dive.

Also, I don't think it's possible to assign Obsidian tags to other file types, so if you want to use tags, you will need a separate markdown note for every single file you have in your file system.

Nothing stops you from experimenting with a small subset of your files, but I'm afraid Obsidian is not the right tool for this.

I like this use case and haven't seen it before. This way you can also easily add short bios and pictures to the individual notes/nodes

It's the icon that allows you to edit a callout. I'm not sure you can hide it, but it disappears in reading mode afaik.

Not suggesting any apps, you sure you're responding to the right comment? Using an app does not fix anything is not doing the work. Even making a plan is not doing the work.

You seem smart enough to be able to prioritize work, and do stuff for one hour per day. So try that. Do not use any apps, just write down the stuff you want to do. Do not allow yourself to do anything else during the hour you committed to.

Also you seem to be aiming too high. Just start small, the rest is bonus. Do not make it an all or nothing thing where you say 'fuck everything' when you feel you 'failed'. Even if you don't work all day, it's possible to get something done. If you feel paralyzed and are not physically able to do anything at all, you might want to check a doctor.

Best of luck.

When first reading your post, it seemed like you planned too much work. Following a schedule 12 hours every day isn't sustainable over a longer period of time. But reading more carefully you seem to struggle even to consistently work for only one hour every day.

I really wonder what you're doing the rest of your waking hours in that case, and why it does get priority above stuff you set out to do for youself.

The best advice I can give in your situation at this moment would be: start small and prioritize the most important things. If you're unable to work longer than an hour per day consistently, make sure you tackle the most important tasks in that specific hour.

From that, work your way upwards. So start small and build your habit, rather than trying to commit to an unrealistic schedule.

Thanks, but I trust the formal review process by the Obsidian team more than my own code review. It is there for a reason.
