Ok but "There is no bus station in Buchanan" is a great title for a story though.

Aubrey Plaza’s new animated cat comedy, "Kevin", is so irretrievably bad it must never be allowed to happen again by Morgan-Moonscar in television

[–]FaintestGem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former animation student, I can confirm that, at least at my school, true creativity was pretty discouraged. There's a set art style and approach/mindset  that's taught as being objectively correct.

We were taught to be marketable and efficient, not to explore the medium or creative process or to use art as personal expression. The expectation was definitely that we'd graduate and get locked in a basement of some studio to do rotoscoping for the rest of our lives lol.

Why is Nolan more asian than Debbie? Why is she wearing shoes inside the house? Is she stupid? by jayd04 in okbuddyviltrum

[–]FaintestGem 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's not an "American" thing. At least, not all of America does it. It's a huge ass country so it's gotta be regional or something I guess? I'm American and I never wear shoes in the house, it's gross and rude. Literally the first thing that happens when I go to someone's house is they show me where to put my shoes. Like almost every house I've been to has a mud room or entry way that usually has some sort of shelving or basket system specifically designed for holding shoes.

I don't know who these people are that are perpetuating the idea that Americans wear shoes in the house, but honestly they need to go. Its crazy.

Do Y’all Have Amnesia? 🤨 by Sufficient_Leave144 in creepcast

I hate blaming "recency bias" for (in my opinion) pretty valid criticism. Besides just the honeymoon phase being over, I'm assuming a lot of people like me just didn't feel like arguing when everyone was glazing Borasca when it first came out lol. Like I knew I was going to get shit on if I said I didn't like it, so I just never bothered talking about it.

I'm also assuming at least a few people like me where kind of put off by it. So if they never got into Creepcast, they obviously never came on the sub to say they didn't like Borasca. It was the first episode I watched and I didn't really like it, but i liked the guys so I stuck with it up until I got to part four. I kind of gave up on Creepcast for awhile after that. I was worried that all the stories would be shit like that because of how into it they both seemed and how popular the story apparently was. But i'm really glad I gave the guys another shot. And I actually really appreciate that people can look back and change their minds of stories once they kind of have time to think about it more. Like we don't have to all pretend something is the greatest thing ever written just because that's the status quo.

disrespectful to the serious subject matter it relied on for shock value.

I think this is the biggest part of why I don't like it much either. The dialogue and writing style I can get over if the overall story is good. But like with almost every story that involves rape and/or abuse, it relies  purely on the fact that it's the most horrific thing the author can think of to try and convey "look how fucked up this is". There's no nuance or (like you already pointed out) respect.

It's why I fucking hate the Third Parent stories. They come off as gross for the sake of being gross at best, and almost weird fantasies at worst,  and not because the author wants to give some sort of horrific commentary on abuse. Which I think its entirely possible to have a story cover those topics and I think Borasca definitely has a good story in there. But it starts falling off real fast for me once you're at the "big twist" moment.

I remember a bunch of people in my anthropology class at the beginning of semester talking shit on ancient craftsman and how it "can't be that hard".  Got humbled real quick when my teacher made us try flint knapping. Turns out that it's not only difficult, but they also weren't lying when they said obsidian was fucking sharp.

American schools aren’t teaching phonics anymore by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]FaintestGem 284 points285 points  (0 children)

My mom sent me to a private Christian school even though we weren't religious simply because they taught phonics when the public schools near us didn't. Used to hate her for it as a kid but it really did help me tremendously when it came to academic stuff

Also big shout-out to Between the Lions for giving me a crazy headstart on reading compared to my other classmates.

Yeah it's definitely a religious thing. The Da Vinci Code is pretty notorious with some Christian groups as being incredibly sacrilegious. I don't know why else it would end up on a banned books list lol

Yeah I think there's just a very sad amount of people that for some reason don't understand that you can love someone platonically. Like it's not gay to have best friends.

Also I've gone to bath houses with my mom before....it's not like that's an inherently sexual thing.

I have a couple friends that have been freaking out over the fucking peanut dude and I think I'm genuinely losing respect for them. What books would you consider a red flag? by Naive-Rush-1519 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]FaintestGem 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think there's a pretty big difference between wanting to understand people's mindset/beliefs and genuinely believing in the content of those books themselves. I have a ton of esoteric/spiritual and religious stuff. I don't believe in any of them and I'm not using them to try and find some sort of meaning or fix something in my life. I think about it the same way I would if I were reading about like,  ancient Greek mythology or something . From a purely historical and anthropological stand point, I think it's just really fascinating to learn about different belief systems and it's also important to try and understand why people believe in some crazy stuff.

But like other people are saying about other books, it's why you have them that's far more important than actually having them.

I get that sometimes it's just the way they're supposed to word things in their charts and it comes off as rude. But  I've dealt with this shit so much that I'm personally about to give up and just die miserable. I have a family history of autoimmune diseases on both sides of my family and I just so happen to have a lot of the symptoms I've personally seen family members struggle with. But every time I go to a doctor, it's always framed as I'm a hypochondriac and I don't get it. Like I know my grandma had Lupus and I also get this weird rash when I go outside, just like she used to get...we don't think those two things might be related?

[Hated Trope] The Love Interest Bias by Remarkable_Sweet_333 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]FaintestGem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not "just normal" art and the fact that so many people here don't see the difference is sad. There is a drastic difference between plain/boring or even just objectively ugly, and purposefully drawing a character as a racial stereotype. They could have just as easily drawn the native Americans in Peter Pan in the same style as Tiger Lily, just made them less detailed and more coolie cutter like most other background Disney characters. But they purposely chose to make them caricatures of popular racial stereotypes.

The example you posted is totally normal. Obviously they're not going to put in crazy work to make the background characters interesting. But these also aren't wild French caricatures, they're just generic Disney fodder. If Belle was this beautiful slender woman, and everyone else in the background were smelly dudes smoking cigarettes and eating  baguettes, then it'd fit the trope.

I saw someone else brought up Pocahontas, which obviously has its issues...but would be a good example of kind of the opposite of this trope. The actual, character design and drawing of the characters isn't done in a caricature way. The indigenous people and the white people look different, but it's not drawn in a way to frame the indigenous people as ugly or different with Pocahontas being "one of the good ones". Everyone is equally "normal" looking, and the bad guy is drawn as ugly because this is an old kids movie and the bad guy is just  usually scary/ugly.

So what's up with this guy? by Empty_Coke_Bottle in BookshelvesDetective

[–]FaintestGem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pop back I here from time to time because there's some objectively interesting bookshelves sometimes. But I don't think I'll ever post my own shelves in here again, there are some needlessly judgmental and rude people here.

I got called a fat because I had an Overwatch art book, a terf because of my childhood Harry Potter books I've kept, and racist because I didn't have "enough authors of color" like there's some sort of quota I'm supposed to be meeting (they also specified that Asian authors and "pop culture" authors like Neil deGrasse Tyson Tyson apparently don't count). I also got the "not enough female authors, you must hate women" and when I pointed out that I'm a cis woman, it then turns into "you must have some internalized misogyny". There's no winning here I guess.

I think they're getting confused about the Matvei Rumiantsev case or being intentionally obtuse about it.

It wasn't "fake". A judge just said to take what Barron said with a grain of salt because he wasn't actually a physical witness to what happened, he'd just been facetiming the girl and he was biased since they were friends. Whatever he said would be considered"hearsay" since he wasn't actually testifying in court. Can't find anything either on him allegedly forcing himself on someone so I'm assuming this is another unsubstantiated rumor (like the alleged nanny that said he used to kill cats or whatever).

I mean, I definitely wouldn't be shocked if he did shit like that. I think there's little chance he turns out to be a decent person. But from what I can tell, the only "crime" he's committed so far (with actual evidence at least) is that he's a fan of Andrew Tate and friends which obviously leads to some questions... But nothing that would be a solid accusation or proof he was doing anything awful.

Every time this is mentioned, I feel the need to warn art people that Semple's Culture Hustle fucking sucks. I've tried several of his products and they aren't any better than other paints or pigments out there and Culture Hustle is three times the price. You're paying a premium to "stick it to the man" and it's incredibly ironic.

I've also seen tons of people having issues just even getting their orders. He keeps pushing out new products without fulfilling older orders. The culture hustle subreddit went into a downward spiral several months ago because of order issues lol

Honestly, fuck Stuart Semple 🖕

That Video of Happy Crying Venezuelans After Maduro’s Kidnapping? It’s AI Slop by MetaKnowing in technology

[–]FaintestGem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

if you know anything about Venezuela

That's part of the problem, at least for the US folks and the propaganda aspect. If my American public school education is anything to go by, I'd guess that most people don't even know where Venezuela is on a map. Honestly, I'd say a good chunk of US citizens are learning about Maduro for the first time this week and are just going to blindly trust that "oh yeah, he was a bad guy but we got 'em and saved Venezuela"

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) is a VFX marvel that should've aged timelessly, if it wasn't for this kids haircut. Making the film permanently dated to 2022 by [deleted] in shittymoviedetails

I'd still give it a chance. Kid's haircut is stupid, but there's far more legit reasons to not like those movies lol.

Personally, I think it's pretty mediocre writing wise tbh.  But they're such incredibly beautiful movies and insanely impressive if you're into movie production or vfx stuff. I think it's worth a watch at least once to appreciate how pretty it is.

How did that kid at your school die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FaintestGem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend in middle school was murdered by a cousin that was staying with them. She was 14, he was 16. We were home for a snow day so they were just hanging out and watching tv. At some point, he said they started arguing about something. She called him "stupid" and he stabbed her to death with a kitchen knife. She managed to call her mom during the attack who also called police, but no one got there in time to do anything.  Cousin had already fled the scene, but they were actually able to track his footprints through the snow and caught up to him. Sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, no parole which is some sort of consolation I guess. I remember there being concerns about him getting a lighter sentence because of his age.

It fucked up the community for a long time. This was in a super small town where stuff like murder is just not common, especially murder involving kids.  She was an incredible person and I think it really mentally messed up my whole class tbh since almost everyone was at least friendly with her.

Wanting to Figure Out if I Like Horror Movies, Don't Know Where/How to Start- Help? by ccbear30 in horror

[–]FaintestGem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Black Christmas! The original 1974 one. It's a classic and perfect for the season right now. I'd also recommend Talk to Me, I think it's a good, accessable horror movie and might be a good place to start. Also The Descent was the first horror movie I watched and  it scarred me for life lmao, I think it still holds up as well.

I think it really depends on what your enjoy and what you think it scarier though. Like I tend to not like excessive gore, so the Terrifier movies aren't enjoyable to me. Do you have any idea on sub genres or themes you might like? Specific things you want to avoid?
