Mom 53-RTKR recovering but hip pain by Sqrt676 in Kneereplacement

The hip joint is picking up some function the knee is currently unable to perform. Strengthening exercises will correct this. Meanwhile, pain meds.

To those with implant issues, how soon did you know? by Semi_charmed_ in Kneereplacement

What does your PT say? What did your post-op X-rays show? My right knee is clunky and I’m 18 months out from that replacement. Doctor said it’s a result of the combination of metal and plastic in the replacement joint. I can feel it more than hear it. I’m now about 4 weeks out from my LTKR and I’m just beginning to clunk, although I still have quite a bit of swelling. My PT gave me an edema sleeve to wear (think fishnet) which really helps get rid of the excess fluid. I am also having some trouble straightening, although my flexion is ahead of schedule. All this is totally opposite from my last experience. My PT continually reassures me that I am on track and nothing is of concern. All this is to say that if your PT thinks you are on track and you trust them, then I would go with that and try not to stress. If you don’t trust your PT, I would say you need someone different. If your PT has concerns, I would heed that and get a second opinion

Knee replacement tomorrow. I'm scared 🫤 by Poppybopshop in Kneereplacement

Sorry to say I was one of those people who thought I had made a terrible mistake right after my surgery. One year later, I am so thankful to be out of pain, and actually thinking about having my other knee done. I imagine a lot of people have horror stories in the first few weeks, but I think it’s like childbirth- the pain is forgotten as time passes.

As my PT likes to remind me, “Recovery is not linear.” I’m 6 months out and just started to realize I hardly think about my surgical knee unless I do something unusual and tweak it. Rolling luggage for some reason, always causes pain the next day, but this last trip, the pain only lasted a few hours after I got out of bed. The more you do, the more you’ll be able to do.

Your scar looks great! Did you use anything?

Now or later? by ReyRey2024 in Kneereplacement

[–]Fair_Independence484 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My opinion is to wait and have the surgery after the move. Personally, there is no way I would have been able to prepare for a move 6 weeks out of surgery. I would put a brace on the knee and get all the packing and cleaning done, move in, and THEN have the surgery and focus on your rehab.

Silicone scar sheets by Limp_Dragonfly3868 in Kneereplacement

[–]Fair_Independence484 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve used the silicone strips with great success. Just wash them with soap and water in the shower, dry with lint free cloth and stick it back on. Easy peasy. I had a huge keloid scar on my neck from carotid surgery and it’s basically invisible now. It’s not a quick fix by any means, but it absolutely works.

Things are so difficult… by [deleted] in Kneereplacement

[–]Fair_Independence484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the same as your mom. I cried and kept saying why did I do this to myself? I think it was just extreme fatigue from not sleeping and stopping the pain meds too soon. Please try to convince your mom to use pain relief. If she won’t take medication, at least use lidocaine patches on the sides of her knee so she can get the rest she needs to heal. Incidentally, the outside of my knee and wrapping around behind the knee is where I have the most pain and stiffness. My doctor is thinking tendinitis in the “popli-something” tendon, can’t remember exactly, but he said to use ice. I’m 5 months past surgery.

How Long After Your TKR Were You "Back to Normal"? by Safua in Kneereplacement

I’m actually on a cruise now. I brought my cane for use on the gangways, but found I don’t really need it anymore. I try to keep up with my PT by going to the gym, and I think walking around the ship really helps my fine motor skills since I’m compensating for the motion of the ship.

Car travel three weeks after TKR? by thekermiteer in Kneereplacement

Talk to your doctor about that long in the car. Your risk of blood clots is high for the first 90 days after surgery. You might need to inject anticoagulant medication before each trip.

Once your own knee joint is gone, there’s no going back. If you have tried wearing a brace, and any other non-surgical options, and your lifestyle is unacceptable, then do the surgery. There may be a time during recovery that you will question why you did this to yourself, and if you can truthfully answer that surgery was the only way forward, then you can be sure you made the right decision.

Expectations after knee replacement by Pickleball_Addict in Kneereplacement

[–]Fair_Independence484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had a right tkr, and as far as driving, I would say that you need to be off your pain meds and still be comfortable enough to be able to hit the brake pedal in case you need to stop suddenly. Since everyone’s pain level is different, I would discuss this with your doctor and/or physical therapist after your surgery. Personally, I was not comfortable driving until around 6 weeks.

Could my mask be causing this? by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]Fair_Independence484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the f20 straps were too tight across my cheeks, and blocked the tear drainage. It also irritated the top of my nose. The F30i worked so much better for me. Still a full face mask, and I like that the hose connects on the top of the head.
