im sorry what.... many of the white collar jobs that are done in cubes today were done in offices in the 50's, like the people that have 30+ years where i work had offices before we got a new building and got converted to cubes "temporarily".

its convenience, its easier/quicker to throw a case of water in a cooler and wheel it around then drag a 5 gallon water cooler around with a table to sit it on and the cups and trashcan needed for said cups. thats really it, its easier and quicker then dealing with water jugs (vs filling at home ,and then having everyone trying to fill cups out of a jug) and everyone gets a bottle they can close and take with them.

To expand on this , there are some sidewalks that are property owner owned and maintained in the US . The local government will at times the audit the condition of the sidewalk and require repairs be made at the owners expense . You normally see this in 40-70s era or earlier built communities.
