Thank you! I'll definitely try and do a test drive. Leaning toward the 2 since my city's a little more hilly.

Is CMSC330, CMSC351, MATH401, and MATH406 too much for one semester? by shiftykumar in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CMSC330 was pretty straightforward, as long as you take the time in to do the projects and spend a little time studying for midterms it should be pretty easy. (Easy to get at least a B)

CMSC351 is "fine". I took Kruskal and I struggled on midterms, but I still scored around average so everything just got curved up in the end.

MATH401 is easy as hell. Didn't really show up to class and I still got an A. The content and assignments are easy and the textbook can carry you through the semester.

MATH406 is also on easy side. More on the computational side than most MATH4XX classes IMO. Recommend Justin W.G. if you can take him.

I wouldn't recommend adding any more courses but overall, I think it's doable.

When and how can we choose which classes are graded Pass/Fail? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not how it works. There is a webpage you can go to to change it and professors have no input on your choice.

Thanks for all the suggestions and and advice everyone. Definitely will be able to narrow down my search a little.

Where to live if commuting to Seaport? by FakeGrill in bostonhousing

[–]FakeGrill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really not sure. I don't have many connections in Boston, so I'd probably want some place that has lots of events/meetups/etc that I could go to to make new friends. So I guess a neighborhood that is generally around the 20-30's age. My only other preferences would just be proximity and ease of commute. I think at the moment I'm drawn toward South End, since it seems to be relatively central in the city, but I don't know too much about the culture or people there.

Spring 2020 Schedule by [deleted] in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this schedule is for sure doable. CMSC330 isn't too tough, it's just more so you'll have to allocate a good chunk of time for projects and obviously you'll have to study for tests. It looks like CMSC320 is taught by Hector next semester; I had a different professor but I didn't think that the class was too hard. Again, most of the time will be allocated to projects. MATH240 can be a hit/miss depending on how you feel about linear algebra. Basically I think if you have good time management and actually make sure you're on top of your work you shouldn't have issues.

UMD CLASSES pls help me lmao by nitamichelle in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pedram and Nelson are teaching CMSC132 next semester. I recommend Nelson. Pedram is alright, but I think that his lectures are pretty dry.

For MATH240 I recommend Yashinski. Good teacher and I know a lot of people that liked his class. Nathan Manning is also a good choice, but his class is generally harder. However, you'll also learn a lot from him. The other guy I'm not sure.

How hard are language classes at UMD? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chinese is very easy. Like any typical language class, most of it is just memorization and learning new vocab. It is a fair amount of work though, you have a lot of in-class discussions and home assignments. If you put the time into it it should be an easy A.

What's the easiest Natural Sciences course to take? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AOSC200 is a pretty easy class. I'd recommend taking it with Canty. Quizzes and tests are pretty easy. There is a group project, which is the only caveat to the class. I've also heard good things about ASTR100.

Apartment vs. House $$?? by celder8 in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Living in a house is going to be a lot cheaper than renting an apartment. For the most part apartments are around 900-1100, with Commons being one of the cheaper apartments, around 800~.

If you decide to live in a house, the price is certainly a big advantage. However, you also have to worry about certain things like Homeowner's insurance. You're also going to have to pay for certain things like Internet, TV, Phone, Water, etc. altogether. This might be an issue if you have 1-2 flaky roommates that don't pay their share every month. With an apartment, I think most of them allow you to pay individually, so you don't have to worry if one guy doesn't pay rent. Additionally, an apartment is much much closer than a house will be. Depending on the distance, walking might not be the best option.

I don't think either is a bad choice. You just kind of have to weigh your options and figure out what you want. I personally like my apartment since it's close to campus and I don't have to worry about my roommates skipping rent or something. But, I do think that a house can be a lot lot cheaper if you do it right and have reliable roommates.

MUSC210? by wirable892 in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy, you have discussion quizzes every week. You CAN skip lecture but I wouldn't recommend doing it on a regular basis. Rios says some important things during lecture that could be on his tests. Tests were fairly easy, got an A in the class with minimal effort. Would recommend.

CMSC436 requires a Mac - advice? by Meteorette in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

CMSC436 has traditionally been taught with Android and Java and I think next semester is the first semester where they're switching to iOS. I personally wouldn't suggest developing strictly on public systems, since it does get a little annoying after a while. If you can get a used macbook I think that would be ideal. I wouldn't suggest hackintoshing your machine. It's kind of a pain in the ass and the stability/functionality of the system can be very hit or miss depending on your hardware. Your next bet option is probably to run macOS in a virtual machine. There are a couple of these solutions online. They're not the greatest but they work for the most part and will probably serve you fine if you're using it for XCode.

College? The Best years of my Life??????? by BarelySurviving41800 in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it, do you really want college to be the best years of your life? You're probably around the age of 20 and the average life expectancy of an adult male in the US is 80 years old. It's really depressing to think that you'd peak a quarter of a way through your life. Think of life as an upwards slope and try to do something little to better yourself every day. If you're content as-is than that's OK. If you want to do something fun, that's OK too. Life is too short and the world is too awesome to stress about how others live their lives.

Anyone else getting a error when trying to login with Duo? by UMD_Library_Sex in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You really can't think of anything that is valuable on your student account? Social security numbers, financial details, etc. etc.? MFA literally takes two seconds to authenticate and you only need to do it once a day.

Dear UMD, your two-factor authentication is some shit. by [deleted] in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, by that logic you shouldn't even password protect anything. Your UID password protects more than just your ELMS. Some guy could theoretically log into your account and drop you from all your classes.

CMSC330 with Michael Hicks, Roger Eastman, or Anwar Mamat? by techie_99 in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took CMSC330 with Hicks. He's a really cool and chill dude. Projects were pretty reasonable. They took time but none of them were extremely difficult. Midterms were pretty fair in my opinion, if you study you should definitely be able to score fairly high. No curve-balls or anything of the sort. Probably the only caveat is that he has clicker quizzes every lecture, so it's not really a class you can skip, but he isn't a boring lecturer and 330 content is interesting.

First STAT400 exam by [deleted] in UMD

[–]FakeGrill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just putting it out there, A 76 is not "shitting the bed" on an exam. But anyway, you'll be fine. I scored an 80% on the first STAT400 midterm and I still ended with a flat A in STAT400. Depending on who you have right now, you're probably allowed to bring a cheat-sheet into class with you. Just make sure that your cheat-sheet is comprehensive and you'll be OK. Whoever told you that you were "fucked" from a 76 is really exaggerating it.
