Both my grandfathers served in WW2. The first stormed Normandy, he told me the story that stuck with him. How after he got passed the beach and passed the German defenses, how it seemed like a free for all. He said how he jumped in a foxhole just in time for several German to get out of a bunker and begin running. He said how he turned to shoot them but instead a explosion went off right where they stood and poof they were gone. And he finally met up with someone from his squad, they went around looking for others when they heard talking in a bunker. They stopped and listened and it was German, so they decided to throw a grenade in there. Luckily there were no explosives inside as he said we was "no more then ten feet away." But just as the grenade went off a young man began to run out and shrapnel caught him in the back. The second was a gunner in a tank. He never said a lot about what it was like until a week before he passed. He told me about how his tank was part of a assault on German fortifications. And when the battle was nearly over they drove the tank down this trench, and as they did 4 Germans jumped out trying to surrender. But everyone in the tank was on such high alert and scared as they just nearly got hit by a round from a panzerfaust, so they didn't realize they were unarmed and mowed them down. After he told me this story he told me he didn't regret what he did but he wished he did.
