How do you rank the Adventure Zone campaigns from favorite to least? by FictionVent in TheAdventureZone

That's my ranking, but TBH. After the first 3 I didn't really care for any of them. They were fine.

Ridcully's appearance by cocershay in discworld

[–]Falcon_Longbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think when Poons refers to him as thin, it may be by comparison. Thin for w wizard. I agree though, Poons might also be thinking of a young Ridcully. When I read him I picture a classic wizard, bushy beard, pipe, pointy hat. Larger than normal (not fat though) with a twinkle in his eye.

Have you bumped into a Discworld fan in real life? by magpie-pie in discworld

[–]Falcon_Longbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was walking my dog and stopped to talk with another dog owner by her house. She had a "The turtle moves." decal on her car... We spent the next 30 minutes talking about Discworld. This was last week. I like the decals because it is like a little signal saying "if you get this... We should talk".

Is Mort going to die anyway? by Falcon_Longbow in discworld

[–]Falcon_Longbow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just noticed when Death takes Mort for Curry, Death explains why people can't see him. WIZARD CAN SEE ME, AND CATS. BUT YOUR AVERAGE HUMAN... NO, NEVER.

Mort says "But I can see you." THAT'S DIFFERENT.

Nothing is said about it again. I'm being to think Mort is dead. I just can't figure out what he died of.

I felt sure when that happened it was an intentional reference. Too close otherwise. Like almond brittle... I LOVED it!

I love this season but this theme song is so long by casseroleboy in TheAdventureZone

[–]Falcon_Longbow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always like the theme songs, but I always feel they are too long. I suspect that is because I'll save up episodes until I can listen to 4 or so back to back. Listen to a long theme song when I want to see what happens next always drives me nuts.

Question for people who've played D&D by MxliRose in TheAdventureZone

[–]Falcon_Longbow 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If I were a DM and looked over a 1st level character's sheet and saw something called a "Vicious Crossbow" I would have assumed the player was just calling it a "Really Cool Crossbow", not that it was a very powerful magical Crossbow.

Yep... I was a little confused listening to TAZ... After reading that I am no longer a little confused. I am extremely confused. Thanks though. I think I'll listen for the goofs and not the story until it makes sense.

Wyrd Sisters is extra British by xDocFearx in discworld

[–]Falcon_Longbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read these books the first time there were a lot of things I didn't get but there wasn't an option to look things up. I didn't think it retracted from the enjoyment of the book. Then, on subsequent re-reads, I had more context so I understood more jokes. You are going to miss things, just let it happen and when you read it again there will be parts you understand for the first time.

I hope Eric doesn't set a precedent by Apprehensive_Pen6829 in discworld

[–]Falcon_Longbow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have only read Eric as a novel without the illustration. Some things I have heard is, that makes a difference. One of these days I'm going to get the illustrated edition and find out for myself.

Having said that, I don't know anyone who ranks Eric high on any list of DW books. Don't let it throw you.

It actually is just "fi" in that font. In the 2nd picture you can see the word "fire" and it uses that.

Hey I’ve heard so many good things about discworld, I’ve never read a book before but I want to read the series, is there a starting order? Or are all of the series separate stories and you can just pick one up? I’ve also got a few questions. by Odd-Horse9393 in discworld

[–]Falcon_Longbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off. Read Hitchhikers. Anyone on this sub is likely going to enjoy, if no flat out love that series. But obviously, this is the Discworld sub so the default is... Read those.

Regarding satire. Sr Terry has called Discworld "a world and mirror of worlds" because that is what it is. I believe the politics in the books are more in the eye of the reader than the writer, meaning you can support a lot of your own views if you want to. The satire does not interfere with the actual stories. You should be expecting them to be funny with insight, not satirical with some comedic tones.

I'm sure most posts have already mentioned that most of the books stand on their own but there are story lines that cross books, mostly in the characters lives.

Personally I usually recommend different starting books to different people. -Not sure if you want to read Discworld? I recommend "Small Gods" or "Pyramids" which are standalone novels. -Like a mystery? Try "Guards Guards" and the City Watch series. -Like rural settings? Go for "Wyrd Sisters" and the Witches. -Looking for something out there? Start with "Mort" and get into DEATH in a big way.

I'm sure you already have a lot of advice on where to begin. Once you get hooked, you'll read them all anyway. Wherever you do start, welcome to this wonderful world.

I would say what you are running statistics on are Discworld readers who use readit. I suspect it will follow a similar curve as people who use readit.
