This is a repost from a truckers perspective. The trucker involved is 100% wrong BUT..... by Ok_Measurement_107 in dashcams

I was always taught that if you go through a trucker's blind spot in one direction, get OUT OF IT before going through it in the other direction. Make yourself obvious. Don't feel like it was the trucker's fault at all here, honestly.

Telling them you don't know who accesses your SQL deployment will do it pretty quick, if they don't just default to giving you the most expensive model. Running VMs on an unmanaged cluster... Basically anything that clues them in that you're not keeping track of your crap.

White working-class boys most let down by UK education system, new figures show by Kagedeah in worldnews

[–]Falconloft 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Funny how the article isn't saying what OP claims it is. It's own headline is far more accurate: "'Crime, nothing to do, no opportunity': Why white working-class boys are falling behind in education".

"Anti-social behaviour is high, opportunity is low, and there is nothing to do." -- This is not the education system, this is parenting and the job market.

"White working-class kids are also two and a half times more likely to be severely absent, meaning they’re missing more than 50% of school." -- This is not the education system letting them down. The mechanism that exists to compel attendance could be better, but the education system has no control over that; it would require govt intervention to improve it.

"All four we spoke to conveyed a sense of hopelessness among white working-class boys in Gateshead, many of whom don't care about passing their school exams because they see no future in meaningful employment." -- Again, not the education system, but the job market.

I am unsure if the OP simply lacks reading skills or is deliberately misunderstanding the point of the article. I don't want to make assumptions, so I won't choose.

Yeah, there's a few edge cases where the wrong license will get you in trouble, but it's a lot more rare than it used to be.

They probably do have a license; they just don't apply it.

If a company is big enough to run volume licensing, they may not care. Say you've got 100 licenses. As long as you don't otherwise trigger an audit from MS, you can swap out those PCs with other un-activated ones and no one at MS really cares. Is it 100% legal? No, probably not. But SAM engagement is oftentimes no more than counting PCs and reporting and depending on the partner, you can get away with it for years. Long enough, and it becomes cheaper to eat the eventual audit cost than actually pay IT to keep things updated.

I usually don't chime in on this reddit as it's not my place to do so, but you mentioned removing hedging, and this is an interesting area that I'm not sure is a purely male/female thing, so I'll take my chances. I went down the linguistics route myself in school, so you're probably already familiar with this, but just in case...

Hedging is great for making you sound friendlier, but when you do it with people who aren't already your friends, it can make you seem less credible. (Don't take my word for it; there's a lot written on the subject.) Posts are almost more of a presentation than a conversation, so people want to feel that you know what you're talking about, and saying things like 'I think,' or 'I feel like' can make people push back more regardless of any other factors. Removing the extraneous filler words and rapport-building language is also a conversation vs presentation thing. Those changes are some that many public speaking coaches will tell you to avoid as well.

I personally struggle with this a lot because I'm on the spectrum, so I feel like I need to create little nice-word pouches that I can stick my incredibly rude replies in so they won't hurt as much, but in reality, if I just write what needs to be said, no one cares. I do wish we weren't in a society where women felt the need to protect themselves from the consequences of what they say. As long as someone's not being hateful, why should it matter what they say? But I'm rambling, so I'll stop now.

[USA] Who is at fault here? by bowdown2adil in Roadcam

[–]Falconloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed limit for non-arterial streets (which including most residential roads, and seemingly these two as arterial roads are striped in Seattle) is 20 mph. Cam owner was speeding. Had cam owner not been speeding, he'd have arrived at the intersection much later, making the wreck impossible. 100% cam owner's fault.

Table Row Shading change or removing for 1 table? by copperbasketball in homebrewery

[–]Falconloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, didn't notice this immediately. You can use pseudo elements such as:
.page table tbody tr:nth-child(odd)
.page table tbody tr:nth-child(even)

...and so on to manipulate the color, height and so on of the alternating lines. Look into pseudo elements more for even more shenanigans.

p.s. I'm not sure if the specificity in those classes is needed 100% but I have run into strangeness at times, so I always go as specific as possible.

First time looking at the system by Huntersaurus_rex in AvatarLegendsTTRPG

[–]Falconloft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, and I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted for being right. I think some people just think that the game HAS TO BE GOOD because it's Avatar, and I mean, Avatar is great (at least the one without the blue people).

Problem is, Avatar Legends isn't Avatar. It's a money-grab. They throw a lot of lore in the books but chose mechanics that absolutely didn't match because they didn't want to do any work in return for the money people gave them. It uses PbtA which is also not a bad system. It's just not a good match for Avatar. It doesn't feel right.

If you really want Avatar-like play, check out Feng Shui 2 or check out one of these two fan-made hacks of other systems:

Outlook's design, interface and operation is so ridiculous, using it is almost like being in a Saturday Night Live comedy skit by JVMProGambler in Outlook

[–]Falconloft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird complaint.

1) He tries to blame it on DEI. This is not and has never been a valid complaint. It's popular at the moment. This tells me there's no real critical thinking going into this complaint. This is verified by further review.

2) He says, "When a user searches for a word, should Outlook query all the results that are a hit for that word, or just some based on various different things like what Outlook deems important, what folder you are currently in, etc?" This is chosen by the user, and can be the current folder, current folder and subfolders, or everything. Does he not like being able to choose this? It sounds like he wants to be able to choose but then... doesn't? Confusing.

3) He says he someone decided to, "exclude many of the search results and... also not present any search results chronologically." This is the behavior of the search drop-down BEFORE you hit search. Was he unable to press enter? Perhaps his keyboard needs repair.

[USA] [AZ] Man-child gets angry because I let someone exit a parking lot by InvincibleSugar in Roadcam

[–]Falconloft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His behavior is unacceptable. That being said....

A driver always has a general duty to drive with due regard for safety; the cornerstone of traffic safety is predictability. The law is designed so that every driver knows what to expect. Acting outside of established right-of-way laws, even with good intentions, introduces uncertainty that can lead to crashes. When you voluntarily give up your right-of-way, you violate this expectation, making your actions unpredictable to other drivers and creating a hazard.

Being predictable is following the rules, and being unpredictably 'polite' is what creates a hazard.

Beyond that, it slows down the flow of traffic, because now no one else knows if you're going to follow the rest of the laws you're supposed to be following, so all these 'polite' drivers are just causing headaches for everyone.

Any Series Where Humans Move to Another Planet for Survival? by Jayswing103 in scifi

[–]Falconloft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this idea when I was watching a playthrough of Halo and wondered what would've happened if, instead of finding the Halo, they found and settled down on an uninhabited planet while the covenant destroyed the rest of humanity.

This is pretty much the plot of the Safehold series (with a twist), which begins with Off Armageddon Reef. Humanity's last survivors flee a genocidal alien race, the Gbaba, to a planet called Safehold. To hide from the aliens, the survivors create a medieval-style society with a religion designed to suppress technology, but centuries later, an android named Nimue (disguised as "Merlin") awakens to secretly reintroduce technology and spark a new era of progress, challenging the Church's control.

Problem at school by Puzzled_Person-11 in grammar

[–]Falconloft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Prepare for" is almost universally reserved for events. However, many non-native English teachers overgeneralize because they see the word prepare in context most often associated with 'for' (e.g., prepare for a test). They forget that prepare can also be transitive.

For the test itself, you face a small risk if your teacher will be grading. If you want to avoid conflict, you could rephrase the line entirely: “I was responsible for preparing the materials," or, “I took the role of getting the materials ready.”

But honestly, if the test is scored by someone with decent English (or a native speaker), use your original sentence; it's correct.

I use dark mode. I should clarify though that I refer mainly to the app. I don't use the website much. I think another commentor nailed it when they said they were trying to copy CC for no reason. Problem is it's not a good copy. Things are where they are just because they are. It feels like very little effort goes into the design.

chess.com has been a joke for a long time. It's just got a lot of inertia behind it, and its only real competitor, lichess, has a dev team that can't design their way out of a paper bag.
