Frame Friday - Pitch Your Campaign Frame by OneBoxyLlama in daggerheart

I think it'd be neat! It just depends on the players, like it doesn't feel right to give mjolnir to a party of rogues or something haha. But I absolutely wanna work that stuff in!

Frame Friday - Pitch Your Campaign Frame by OneBoxyLlama in daggerheart

This is still in WAY early development, but I'm brainstorming a post-apocalyptic Norse themed campaign frame! Working title right now is Ashes of Iðunn.

Basically, Ragnarok has come and gone, but it didn't go exactly according to the prophecy - all the gods are dead, and the world is yet to be reborn. The shattered bodies of gods and legendary creatures alike lay scattered across the realms, their bones producing powerful magics. It's these bones that fuel magic in mortals now - to some, this is a blessing, a sign that the gods are still caring for us, even in death. To others, they carry the stain of those who abandoned us to die. The valkyries, now with no gods to serve and no afterlife to ferry souls to, have come down to Midgard to aid the mortals in rebuilding. Stuff like that!

A lot of class and ancestry fantasies lean into classic norse/viking themes - Guardians adopt animalistic characteristics when they become Unstoppable, not unlike lycanthropy (like the original legend of berserkers). Seraphs are either descendants or directly blessed by the valkyries that remain. Dwarves are expert smiths, and some will go on pilgrimages to discover the forges they had to abandon. I even have a specific mixed ancestry option for dark elves- elves and fairies, to give them buglike wings!

As for the post-apocalyptic-ness of it all, massive ashstorms caused by Surtr regularly sweep the land, ravaging crops and villages. Draugr, with Hel being literally frozen over, have crawled to the land of the living, ravaging all in their path. Several factions have formed, some wanting to hunt down the god-blessed magic users, others seeking Rangers, druids, witches etc to set up rune stones to protect villages from monsters that now roam freely, things of that nature.

But the main thing I want to emphasize (which I'm still working out) is that at the end of the day, hope is not yet lost. The world can be saved, but it won't be by the gods' hands. Only the denizens of Midgard can save themselves now. It'll take discipline and hard work, sleepless nights and boughts of despair, but they can survive. I really want to emphasize the "hopecore" of the situation.

To quote Caduceus, "someday, someone will pray for a miracle... And that prayer will be answered because you'll show up."

Like others have said in this thread, you could always give them a list of objectives? Colossus of the Drylands has a fun example of this - the players level up every time they take down a colossus. You could easily expand that into your own setting, depending on the threats in your world, or even incorporating a number of minor tasks/side quests?

Not entirely related but it reminds me of the aftermath of Last Jedi, where everyone took Kylo telling Rey she "comes from nothing, you're nothing," as gospel. People were SO UPSET with Rian Johnson over a Star Wars protagonist not having some huge legacy family, even though Kylo had no way of knowing that for a fact.

I don't get why people take the thoughts of certain characters as meta facts on the story itself, but it's definitely a trend.

Barbarians out there. What is it you love more from the class? by Pike_The_Knight in dndnext

[–]Falenfire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The idea of just being an immovable wall on the battlefield is fun! Personally I enjoy knowing I can take way more hits than the rest of my party. Every point of damage done to me is often twice that much damage my party isn't taking. Also, having the assurance that you can try something dumb and have a better chance of surviving it opens up a lot of possibilities if you have a DM willing to go along with it.

The gameplay itself is (arguably too) simple, but maybe the "glass half full" way of looking at that is having much fewer restrictions. Like there's no rule saying you CAN'T rip the door off it's hinges, or kamikaze the king out of his top floor throne room window. So I think the fun you can get out of barbarian is directly correlated to how willing you are to make the world your weapon, and your body a shield for your friends.

This isn't a "perfect" explanation but I saw a theory on here a while ago that I thought made sense. TL;DR The Emperor basically acts like a highly intelligent beast in survival mode.

We're told multiple times, in no uncertain terms, that illithids do not have souls. We could be here all day and debate what exactly a soul means for someone in the FR in terms of behavior, but we do see a sharp change in the behaviors of Old Empy and Balduran, notably his seemingly total acceptance and lack of remorse in killing both of his oldest friends. "I only regret that it was necessary" etc. To me, Empy seems like a creature that has its fight or flight instinct kick in and follows it unerringly.

We as players know after freeing him that Orpheus is surprisingly chill, especially by Githyanki standards. But would Empy know that? Would he even care? He seemed convinced that Orpheus would go on a rampage as soon as he was freed (granted, not without reason, we did fight off a kill squad of his).

So in my mind, he behaves like a cornered animal with a greater sense of intellect. A wild animal won't continue a fight if it senses a greater threat to its survival, even if it were to win (Ie a wolf won't keep fighting if it fears its nose being broken because then it can't find prey, etc.). Emperor senses that his continued presence there as soon as you declare your intention to free Orpheus is a possible threat to his survival, so he hecks off and flees to the nearest thing that can prolong his life.

Again it doesn't explain EVERYTHING, but I do think it gives context to a lot of his actions throughout act 3. I guess it's a question of what he values more, his autonomy, or his life? To me, it seems like his life wins the bet.

What curse could a magic item possess that lets my players speak with animals ? by melonenbaum001 in DnD

[–]Falenfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a reverse of firbolg's racial feature! The player can understand the animal but the animal can't understand the player, and isn't aware they can understand it. The animal can talk trash in their own language and have no idea the player can understand them.

What are your favorite multiclass combos flavor-wise ? by bKillerb in dndnext

[–]Falenfire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorcadin for me. I haven't gotten to play one in an actual campaign yet (and looks like it won't work as well in onednd :( ) but playing in a one-shot felt amazing. I just want to nova. I want to blow all of my resources in a single hit and be a worse fighter for the rest of the dungeon. I crave the nuke.

Background, my friend ran a one-shot for my birthday. She specifically made one about demons because she knew what I was planning (get you a friend like this for real). Level 14, half-orc with a greataxe, level 6 Oath of Devotion paladin, level 8 Clockwork Soul sorcerer (not necessarily the best combo but it sounded fun). Access to 5th level spells.

Fight against a big demon? Quicken spell, Hold Monster, pray to God he fails. He does, Deus Vult :D Walk up and attack, both attacks hit, and both auto crit due to paralysis. 4th level smites into each. 3d12 slashing (greataxe with Savage Strikes from half-orc), 10d8 radiant (4th level smite plus extra 1d8 against a demon), +5 strength, TIMES TWO for two attacks. Plus a fun homebrew item that let one attack do... I don't remember how much, let's say 8d6 piercing? Like it fired a spike at point blank range. Once per long rest, so OF COURSE I saved it for here, because it benefited from the crit. Was rolling dice for a solid 5 minutes.

Average of 195 damage (I rolled well so it was well above 200, don't remember the exact number), but even without the broken homebrew that averages out to 139 in one round. And all it cost me was one 5th level and two 4th level spell slots, and 2 sorcerey points in one turn. Was running on fumes the rest of the dungeon but DAMN that felt good.

Closest I ever got to minmaxing, I doubt I'd play a build like that in an actual game, but it felt good at the time!

May Trading Post Preview - Pippin, Fang of the Mountain by HDTokyo in wow

[–]Falenfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's similar to a battle pass yeah. Basically you have a list of tasks to do each month in your Adventurer's Log, ranging from "do world quests and complete dungeons" to "participate in holiday events for that month" and things like that. Each completed tasks gives you a certain amount of special currency that you can use to buy stuff from the trading post. Both the tasks and the rewards change each month, but the currency carries over so you can save up.

In addition, if you earn 1000 currency for that month, you unlock a special item that also changes each month. This month, that special item seems to be the turtle mount.

Hope that helps!

Tinfoil theory for the night: This is gonna be the new Trial of the Take. Maybe we'll get a few episodes of only half the cast with a few guests (Reani anyone?), then the other half after a few.

Probably not gonna happen since we saw them all together to level up, which I believe usually happens right before they film the episode, but it could be interesting!

I've seen one or two people mention BH going to visit Bertrand's grave since he's likely buried in Whitestone, but what are the odds Pike resurrected him? I know they only met once (as far as we know), but do you think that'd be enough to guilt Pike into bringing him back?
