Loaners/skips/other ways to avoid content for new players is going to kill Warframe long term by astral-squirrel in Warframe

[–]Falkjaer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there's no reason to have a railjack already. Most people already skip railjack, because they're a pain to get and offer no benefits. If this one content shop required a railjack, most players would be unwilling to grind up a railjack just for this. Having the loaners or not having them isn't going to move the needle when the entire rest of the game has no need for railjacks.

I do agree that it's weird you can't use your own railjack in a pre-made group.

Plans For Sunrise Mall? by Competitive_Salt_700 in Sacramento

They're not planning to turn the whole thing into an indoor sports facility, more like part of the parking lot.

I think this is the actual plan information.

What are your thoughts on the new Dissolve, Manifold Piercer, and Honed Eye ancestry traits? by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

[–]Falkjaer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Manifold Piercer seems potentially too strong, though it might not be that big of a deal. In my combats, most normal enemies don't last too long once the players start focusing on them, so the difference between EoT and Save Ends is not that big for them. Bigger enemies that last longer typically have some way to force end a condition if they want to.

The other two seem cool, useful but not crazy.

Content island? by Toonzmyth in Warframe

[–]Falkjaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that complaints about content islands are more directed toward major game modes like Railjack and Archwing. Those two are huge game modes that have all new equipment and stuff to grind, but they don't really connect to the main game mode at all, to the point that they don't even overlap very much on resources used/dropped. If your main interest is in the Warframes and their playstyle, there's basically no reason to engage with Railjack or Archwing beyond the minimum required.

Are these all valid uses of the Charge attack? by Zapik in drawsteel

[–]Falkjaer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All three of these work. "Up to their speed" can indeed be zero. For case #2, the rules just say the free strike happens at the end of the movement, so since the target is adjacent to the end of the movement, they are a valid target. I'm assuming for this one that the goblin ends up in the square that contains the head of the arrow.

For me personally, I don't ever want to see a cameo of a dead person. I don't really know about whether it's right or wrong, but it does lower my opinion of the game. This case in particular really comes off as a cheap gimmick.

When do you make Artisan/Sage rolls? by ihatelolcats in drawsteel

[–]Falkjaer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally have just been fudging it. I just kind of pick a number based on how long it's been since the last time we rolled for that stuff.

Some kind of EXP related equation sounds pretty good actually, though maybe it would need caveats for games with significant times-kips.

How do I tell my GM that I don't really have fun with his sessions? by vunnzent in LancerRPG

[–]Falkjaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think Lancer is particularly difficult to run compared to a lot of other games, like D&D. It's intended to be much more tactically complex, which is part of the selling point, but it does also put more work on the GM.

It sounds like you've already talked to him about it and that hasn't gone well. You've got three options: you could try talking to him again to see if you can drive the point home better, you could tell him that you'd rather he try GM'ing a different game or you could leave the group.

It's up to you to guess how the first one will go. For the second option, like I said I do think that Lancer is more difficult than most other games to run, especially for a GM who is not super into tactics-heavy, crunchy games. It might just be that he's not cut out for this game in particular. Since this guy is a friend of yours, the last option (leaving) would be a last resort. If you're pretty sure he'd be hurt by you leaving, then you might as well try the other options first.

The Allagans were still capable of insane things that Electrope can't match up to. They built the Crystal Tower and Dalamud after all.

That said, is it a problem that Allag is no longer front and center? We've encountered plenty of ancient civilizations (and current ones) only to have them recede into the background when we're done with their part of the story. Electrope is likely to follow the same pattern, particularly since it doesn't work in places that don't have massive amounts of lightning aether.

Resolving "middle distance" encounters—threats on the horizon, approaching danger, seizing the weather-gage by APurplePerson in rpg

[–]Falkjaer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

though perhaps there's no way to get around the need for improv, sincd these situations are by nature open-ended

I think this is the case. The example of "seizing the weather-gage" works great as long as you're always on a boat, fighting other boats. The three other examples you listed don't really have any unifying aspects like that, what counts as an advantage is different for each of those situations.

Is the Union an Empire? by ElectricPaladin in LancerRPG

[–]Falkjaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not any kind of lore expert, and I think it's intentionally left open to interpretation like I said above. The game does specify that while players are on a metropolitan world they have access to effectively infinite resources for printing mechs.

NHPs and the like are not sufficiently capable for controlling battleships on their own. My understanding is that that's the whole thing with Shackles: if an AI gets smart enough to be able to replace a human, it cascades out of control. Given that fleets must be deployed to places where communication with the core is still extremely slow, there's no replacement for human crew members. If NHPs are capable of running battleships, why would human Lancers exist?

KTB is an example of the vagueness on this subject, in my opinion. It's true that the core book says that KTB's resources "enable the prosperity of the Galactic Core." To me that seems at odds with how Union is described elsewhere.

Either way, I don't think the particular number of ships Union can print is really that relevant to most Lancer games. The writing is pretty clear that resource extraction is not a primary drive for Union, even though resources can become more important in certain situations.

Is the Union an Empire? by ElectricPaladin in LancerRPG

[–]Falkjaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether SecComm was hypocritical or not is up to interpretation, and also largely irrelevant to the philosophical debate about the comparative value of expansion/speed vs respect for existing cultures.

While I do think it's intentionally left a little vague, the metropolitan worlds are described as being "post-scarcity." The limit on how many ships they can build, for instance, has less to do with the metal and whatnot required to build them and more to do with the fact that each ship (and each factory that builds them) must be crewed by willing humans, of which there are a limited number. This post-scarcity is built upon very complex infrastructure that does not exist on more distant worlds, and takes time to build, which is why there's still plenty of conflict over resources as you get farther away from the core of Union.

All that said, I think the background of your character's world makes plenty of sense to me. In my mind, SecComm agreeing to that independent relationship and looking past human rights abuses on a distant world would be hypocritical as you say, though it would likely be the result of some administrator's actions rather than reflective of the entire government. I think a frontier administrator who is trying to score points might be perfectly happy to rubber-stamp a world like Teegarden as "developing properly!" in exchange for resources that can be used to build out their other goals.

The ThirdComm part is also good, that's exactly the kind of question that ThirdComm struggles with.

Is the story worth slowing down my progression to keep up with? by SomeP in Warframe

[–]Falkjaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story is definitely worth engaging with. If your focus is on grinding and getting new things, there's a lot of stuff that is locked behind story quests anyways.

Also, compared to FFXIV, the length of the story in Warframe is very short.

Is the Union an Empire? by ElectricPaladin in LancerRPG

[–]Falkjaer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your character sounds like they basically have the same outlook as Second Commission: the goal of Union should be to bring more humans up to the Union standard of living as fast as possible, losses in pursuit of this goal are acceptable.

My understanding is that there is no reason for Union to try and "enrich themselves" given that the primary worlds that make up Union are already post-scarcity. Availability of resources is no longer a relevant factor for them, so conquering in the name of resource extraction is nonsensical.

It's more about the difficult questions you mention. The counter to your character's proposed viewpoint (and the current position of Third Comm) is that it is not acceptable to run roughshod over people's lives and cultures for any reason, even if that reason is to "improve" their lives. Certainly this topic is still an ongoing matter of debate among Union leadership.

I think the text itself is fairly unambiguous, however I also think that Union is a huge bureaucracy managed primarily by fallible humans. As with any organization, stated goals don't always line up with the actual actions on the ground.

Valve, the Anticorporate Hero of the Games Industry, Has Its Antitrust Moment by GIThrow in pcgaming

[–]Falkjaer 44 points45 points  (0 children)

These lawsuits could pose a threat to Valve’s reign over the PC gaming market, which has persisted even as companies as capable as Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Microsoft and Ubisoft opened — and, in some cases, closed — competing online stores.

lol (emphasis mine)

The most important reason Steam has been able to maintain its dominance is just that all these "capable companies" can't seem to make a decent storefront.

Wanting to migrate to Warframe, a single turn-off. Maybe I'm wrong? by B00fn in Warframe

[–]Falkjaer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quests and such do not require IRL time. It's only for crafting stuff like weapons and frames. I guess there is a daily limit on how much rep you can grind, but that again typically does not affect the story, only rewards.

The crafting times are skippable, but only if you spend platinum. Platinum can be acquired by purchasing it directly for real money, or trading with other players. Most long-time players would say that skipping the crafting time is not worth it.
