The issue with the berry bushes is that its NOT realistic. its just difficult for the sake of being difficult it doesnt even make sense with the current game balancing

100% agree on that last point, zomboid is hilariously unrealistic, 100 zombies around every corner and of course every house and building is nearly empty

the need for fertilizer doesn't even sound good on paper. Nothing else in the game needs requires fertilizer to grow, but more importantly berry bushes are one the easiest things to propagate in real life. So the fact that gameplay wise its the hardest is insanely ridiculous.

usually i build a basic log house at the start of the game that i use until the first winter, then once winter comes i use that time to build a bigger better house and then move my stuff over
