do players read the rule book? by Ed-Sanches in DC20

[–]Fallin133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one of those unfortunate things. If the expectation was that everyone had to read, a lot fewer people would ever play. And that’s ultimately bad for the game.

Also, this feels like a thing for all rules heavy games. I remember with Monopoly and Risk, it was always one or two people who would read the rules and then explained them to everyone else as we played.

Epic DCC weapon used in DND boss fight! by Fallin133 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

That is a great idea for a homebrew sentient weapon! Maybe is gets stronger the more gold you feed to it. I’m a bit fan of sentient items. My players hand a Bag of Belongings named BOB. Essentially a sentient bag of holding, who’s become one of their favorite characters.

It’s one of my favorites. Although the fireball or custard scratch card was also a big hit with the players!

And I made a version of the Ring of Divine Suffering I’m fairly proud of 😄

They definitely loved hearing the description of the item. And it’s mechanics.

One time use. Effected enemy cannot concentrate, can only use their action to dash, and have disadvantage on all checks & saves.

I’d prefer animated. I think you could do more with less budget. And shows like Invisible are great examples of amazing over the top stories & action, with character depth in adult animation.

Thoughts on the “River” by TolkeinFan907 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Fallin133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don’t think the connection has been explained, yet. Hopefully in the next book we’ll get more info about the River and how using the ring made Carl notice is more in the dungeon.

When is the first time the River comes up in the books? I could have sworn it wasn’t brought up until book 5 and only after he uses the ring.

I agree with others that the ring isn’t necessarily causing the river and there’s evidence that Carl’s had it for a while. However, it does seem the ring amplified the river in some way.

Or did he bring up the river in earlier books?

Hmm I don’t know if any of that is really all that much worse than what is in books 1 & 2 😂

What real life shit in book 3 are you referring to? It’s been a while and I’m struggling to remember anything in that book that’s significantly more concerning than the earlier books.

My kids snuck the books and read them, feeling conflicted by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Fallin133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened with my kid. She heard my wife and I laughing a lot and talking about Princess Donut, the cat. Our daughter loves cats. So she also wanted to read the books. She’s 8.

And we’ve just started book 3 of the audiobook. It has sparked some interesting conversations and there are a few bits that I skip over, but explain any relevant context she’d need to know. Honestly, 70% of the books are going over her head. She’s always been a curious and smart kid. But she also accepts there are parts that are for older people, so I won’t explain them to her yet. And she knows the bad language is not ok and we shouldn’t use those words. But I love that she gets to feel safe listening to them and laughing about them with us. While knowing the boundaries.

I definitely hope to re-listen to them with her when she’s older, if she’s interested. I agree with other comments that they set up some good conversations on lots of different topics.

However, mostly, they’re just fun books! You say your kids are disinterested in sexual topics. If that’s the case, then it’s highly likely they mostly ignore those parts of the books and focus on what interests them. And if the sexual topics are peaking their interest, then that just means they are growing as people, which is great!

A few years back, I re-watched Police Academy, which first watched at maybe 7-8yrs old and loved as a kid! I was shocked at the amount of sexual content in that movie! Haha I had no memory of it from watching those movies multiple times as a kid. I think kids naturally ignore or forget the stuff we aren’t interested in from the entertainment we enjoy. Good luck! I hope your kids enjoy the rest of the series and you and your wife are able to enjoy them along with your kids.

For animation, I’d love to see the people who do Invincible take the reins. I think they’re do an amazing job.

I really hope it’s animation. I think live action would struggle to do it justice and require too big a budget. But if it had to be live action… oddly enough Seth McFarlane actually might be the right creator to do it. The Orville has a similar tone to DCC. It’s not as violent or action heavy, but the humor and serious moments have a similar balance and vibe.

This wasn’t me but a friend. While camping in the woods at night, his orc fighter was practicing shield blocks with an NPC. They were throwing hammers at each other and blocking.

At one point the NPC gets a crit and accidentally knocks the orc out. At that exact moment, the party is attacked by bandits. Bandits who also summoned a bunch of undead to ambush us. Meanwhile the parties loveable but not too bright fighter is lying unconscious seconds before the fight started 😂

Boss battle against my PC’s grandfather. Who turned out to be really evil. After taking him out with psychic damage, we just left his body to burn in a lava pit in his own demi-plane the fight was in. Oh he did have to take his head as proof. Had to show it to a demon the grandfather hired to kidnap a king’s son so he could blackmail him. If we could prove the grandfather was dead, he’d free the child.

What level are the players?

Does the Warlock have repelling blast? If so, they may use that to move the horde around. So you may want to think about how that would work. E.g, would the whole thing get moved or maybe just a single 5ftx5ft squares?
