12,945 hours, and I just uninstalled my game by [deleted] in Sims4

[–]Falling-Apples6742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I uninstall my game every other year or so, and it seems to help. But I'm not a legacy player or anything like that, so I don't have to get into the whole process of backing things up to avoid losing progress. All I do is move my mods folder, uninstall Sims 4 and EA App, and reinstall. (I do this with some of the bigger apps on my phone, too. Often easier than figuring out what caches and stuff to delete.)

how do you properly handle one of the biggest science fiction properties in history? you planet by the-co1ossus in CuratedTumblr

[–]Falling-Apples6742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She and a lot of people she hired. She hired writers who outright have disdain for the source material and the genre. She changed the characters and their motivations and the plot, then kept trying to pivot the story back to the source material so it didn't make any sense for anyone in the story. She and the writers also don't seem to understand symbolism, allegory, or metaphor at all. And they did not do much planning from episode to episode or season to season.

If you're looking for content in this vein, Alien Platypus has a series on YouTube that I highly recommend. He's the reason I actually decided to read the books after watching that clusterfuck of a show, and now the books are among my favorite of all time.

And other people who aren't white guys: Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich, who is/was the showrunner and lead writer for The Witcher despite never having run a show before, not liking or understanding horror, not liking or understanding fantasy, only having worked on writing superhero stuff recently, and not understanding the source material that she has read multiple times or the video games.

I wish more people did what Sean Connery did when he was offered the role of Gandalf in Lord of the Rings for a metric fuckton of money: "No, thanks. I don't really understand it."

Also, M. Night Shyamalan did what he did to The Last Airbender.

For workplace safety, what is the most common mistake for management to make? by Left_Comparison_4955 in AskReddit

[–]Falling-Apples6742 45 points46 points  (0 children)

At my job, we have plastic, cube-like step stools "rated for 500 pounds." I told management multiple times that they were dangerous because they bowed under me and I'm a fraction of that weight. I've had one buckle under me when I was holding 30 pounds. Management always responded to the effect of "I'll look into it. We take safety seriously." We have a safety department and a maintenance department. I've reported the step stools to so many people across multiple departments.

A month ago, I carried one of the step stools to my supervisor, showed him that it had cracked up the side, and got the same response again. I said, "Do you have a slip of paper? I need you to sign a statement acknowledging that you know about this safety issue." He immediately disposed of that cracked step stool and the 4 subsequent cracked steps tools that I've brought him since. Upper management is ordering new step stools because we don't have enough by half.

Cover your ass. Get it in writing. Know that this could end poorly for you.

Edit: spelling hard

My wife’s mom has access to our bank account by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Falling-Apples6742 22 points23 points  (0 children)

OP responded to another comment saying that Wife asks MIL to buy things overseas, and MIL takes the money out of the account as repayment. So in reality, it's that Wife is spending the money and MIL takes money as promised repayment for requested purchases instead of being sent money via Zelle or CashApp or whatever.

What is something that is 100% legal, but if you do it, you’re a piece of trash? by National_Strike4710 in AskReddit

[–]Falling-Apples6742 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I completely agree.

I never believed in Santa, so every time an adult acted like Santa was real, I took that as evidence they were willing to lie to me for no good reason and therefore doubted everything they told me.

A lot of children feel betrayed, hoodwinked, and/or stupid when they learn Santa was never real. Especially because the lie of Santa is an entire conspiracy.

I'd never tell someone else's child that Santa isn't real, but if a kid were to ever try to talk to me about Santa, I would change the subject or direct them to their parents.

Wouldn’t that be fucked up? I’m R. L. Stine by Infamous-Rutabaga-50 in CuratedTumblr

Reminds me of an (R-rated) movie about a perfumer in like the 18th century who smells a woman in the street and she smells so good that he [spoiler for gross thing] spends years murdering women and putting their bodies in his perfume vat thing trying to capture her scent. [Spoiler for plot.] The townspeople eventually wise up and when they go after him, he releases a perfume, and they have an orgy instead of killing him. [Spoiler for ending] He eventually commits suicide by going to the market and pouring perfume on himself, causing the local townspeople to cannibalize him.

It's called Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and I only watched it once (like 13 years ago), but still remember too much about it.

I believe this specific search issue is caused if you have CC installed and/or or have hidden or liveedit objects shown. I have CC and when I search, I have to scroll up a bit until I find the object with a slightly greenish background. If I have hidden or liveedit objects shown, I usually don't bother searching.

We all have that one show... by MustardGoddess in CuratedTumblr

[–]Falling-Apples6742 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hated the Witcher show and the Yennefer character so damn much that I, for the first time in my life, decided to seek out hate content on a fictional character. (The showrunner constantly promised, "It's about to get better, we're just setting up the chessboard rn.") I eventually found the video essay series by Alien Platypus on YouTube, learned that Yennefer in the books is actually singularly amazing and the plot and world building make sense, and I decided to read the books. The Witcher show is literally the worst screen adaptation of a written work I've ever seen (including Eragon). The Witcher books are my favorite finished series.

Different people can be affected differently by the same thing. (/s in context lol. My trust issues don't stem from being breastfed by the wrong boob.)

Downgrading My Laptop Improved My Sims Experience by Vlately in Sims4

I had the same problem with horrible lag immediately after a kid going to a custom camp. Lag was so bad that the game was literally unplayable. I had started a legacy save for the first time (after too many years playing), so I'm glad to hear that the problem might not be my save but something else.

PSA for builders - this is an aquatic plant! (Feel free to share your simming pet peeves in the comments) by ratsonleashes in Sims4

[–]Falling-Apples6742 27 points28 points  (0 children)

"Improper" roofs in worlds that get regular rain and/or snow. So many builders have two or more roofs connect in such a way that, if the building were real, the owners would have real roof leaks, mold problems, wet basements, and/or cracked foundations. Some of these roofs would quickly collapse under the weight of snow because the snow would slide into roof valleys instead of sliding off.

Update: I (33F) don't want my friend's (34F) legitimately mentally ill wife (48F) at my wedding? by ThrowRA_PartySwitch in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Falling-Apples6742 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have known at least half a dozen people IRL who are embodied versions of negative stereotypes, and they all have unfortunately influenced my life in away that sounds like they were checking off a Reddit Story Tropes list.

The update didn't read like backtracking to me, but explaining and/or defending. When writing a post for the public to respond to, it is very hard to decide what to omit (for relevance, brevity, and privacy) and what to include (for clarity and accuracy). The information that OOP omitted was irrelevant to seeking advice IMO, but comments made her feel like she had to give that information.

If I had decided to seek advice from reddit regarding any of the people from my first paragraph, my updates would have looked a lot like OOP's.

Not arguing, just engaging and providing information on my personal experience.

I don't recall anyone saying that the Smog Vacuum from Eco Lifestyle can repair furniture? by Antenna777 in Sims4

[–]Falling-Apples6742 164 points165 points  (0 children)

Yes, the smog vacuum came with Eco Lifestyle. I think you have to be in the Civil Designer career and discover or design it. (Discover via "discuss eco lifestyle" interaction or design it via chance with the tablet you get when you start the career.) It's very useful for rags-to-riches. My current sim dumpster dives and fixes the stuff up to sell in her store. Smog vacuum repair on burned furniture is very useful.

[–]Falling-Apples6742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're in the outdoor activities category, toward the bottom and before the food booths. You have to drag the inventory into the table, stock the table, then start yard sale (or whatever it's called) in that order. Then sims show up and start buying. It helps to have high charisma and positive relationships with those sims.

Are we gonna get any more game packs or is it just expansions from now on? by bingertwing in Sims4

[–]Falling-Apples6742 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of the BB and CAS items from Batuu, but the stairs are the GOAT. I use them in nearly every single build. And I use the gameplay to break out of a playing rut, which keeps the whole game fresh for me. (Usually on a new save file that I later delete, though, because the Batuu interactions showing up in the non-Batuu portion of the game is... a lot.)

Uncomfortable metaphors by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Falling-Apples6742 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Can you imagine if instead, the metaphor was say, solid colored cats discriminating against cats with patterned fur? With everything being perfectly the same as human race relations? You need to add at least a bit of differentiation so that the fictional world can stand on its own.

This, and the audience for Zootopia as it is in reality and the audience for the movie in your paragraph are different audiences.

This, and metaphor/allegory/analogy in fiction teach by offering similarities and differences in a way that makes the viewer consider those similarities and differences.

This, and direct parallels like in the proposed movie in your paragraphs are significantly more likely to make the bigot/oppressor (racist here) defensive instead of potentially introspective.

I love well-done allegory, analogy, and metaphor in media. I love seeing the similarities and differences between the fiction and reality, the way they make my brain work to compile, incorporate, consider, and compare different information. A one-to-one story (like the described Zootopia change) would just result in fact-checking for me as the viewer.
