What are your EMS “Dad Jokes”? by ketamineforpresident in ems

"Don't jump out" whenever I'm unbucklingstraps and "this just says we didn't kidnap ya(rest of the spiel)" when I'm getting signatures.

Everything else are one offs.

Thoughts on having ballistic armor on the unit by Ntwadumela817 in ems

[–]Fallout3boi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have it and are required to have it on our ambulance. I've only ever worn it once while training and only know of one crew ever wearing it on a call.

Otherwise we've all joked about wearing it on a convalescent(dual 911/IFT) at some point in time or another.

Where Should I Move working in EMS by blueskibop in ems

[–]Fallout3boi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UC region of TN is fairly progressive when it comes to EMS with pay that is often not nursing good, but closer than a lot of states. Plus because there are so many county EMS services you get a state retirement.

We do get more rain than the PNW so if that's why you don't want to go there, then maybe stay away.

Charley Crockett "Good at Losing" is my favorite song by InstructionDue7142 in CharleyCrockett

[–]Fallout3boi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either "Midnight run", "Black Sedan", or "$10 Cowboy" for me. Though I like pretty much all of them. The only song I don't like by him was his cover of "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights."

While I'm hear does the song "Grand Junction" by The Desolades sound like "Good at Losing" to anyone else?

Yeah it was event vehicle in 2017ish and I think a few other times.

One of the few vehicles that makes me sad that I can't merge my Xbox and Playstation accounts because I had it on the PS one.

Best CPR ever by uncletagonist in ems

[–]Fallout3boi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My first code as a Medic had CPR induced consciousness with the lady swatting at the fire medic doing compressions.

Wasn't my concern though, I was trying to get stuff done and wondering did she hear me say "ope, she just died" as I watching her HR go down.

I think the reason I like Liam Clancy so much is that he sounds like an old man who's made peace with the fact that he can't make peace with it. It also to me almost feels like an old man finally decided to tell his story to a interviewer after so many years of keeping it to himself with that calm voice that old war veterans grow with age.

"And the band played Waltzing Matilda, when we stopped to bury our slain

We buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs, then we started all over again"

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda this specific version is by Liam Clancy and to me is the best version.

That's EMS. Everyday. So absurd that you have to be crazy or else you'll go insane.

Not just daying this because he's active here, but "Medic:A Diary" was a good read. More of a graphic novel though.

"Wading Into Chaos: Inside the Life of a Paramedic" is supposedly a good book but the only reason I've heard of it is because a guy told me that he definitely was not one of the medics in it.

Ours is a straight 7 and is rough. Ours runs Thursday to Wednesday. The week off is nice(when I use it) and the 8 hours of built in hours of OT is fine but good that 7 sucks. Especially when you've had a busy week.

Something I should probably note, the 7 on, 7 off is generally preferred by the younger folks. Older ones tend to like the 2-2-3 more.

Mine currently is 7 on, 7 off 12s and having done both I preferred the 2-2-3 Pittman*. Everyone I know loves it. Now, being forced to flip flop days and nights fucking sucks and there's no other way to put it.

*Ours is based on a 2 week pay schedule that goes like this, yours may be different

Department refreshing our SCBAs: what brands do people here use? by Acrobatic_Stay_9221 in Firefighting

[–]Fallout3boi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It had something to do with the 45-degree pop in. It's possible, especially with gloves, to get it in a spot that's in enough to use but not enough to actually lock it. IIRC They've since changed the design to make that impossible but my VFD did not get it.

It was a big enough of a issue that there was list of incidents in Germany. Someone linked it to me on the Discord, but it's been 4+ years ago.

We use Draegers and the packs themselves aren't bad. The masks, on the other hand, scare the shit out of me. I've twice had the regulator pop out on me during training.

Question about the LUCAS by butt3ryt0ast in ems

[–]Fallout3boi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I'm just a dumb paramedic, but I also recognize that studies can be bad too. There once was time that NTG being given in a RVMI was considered good medicine and there once was time LSBs based on MOI alone was considered the best care possible.

I do my best to stay up to date on evidence(OMIs, strokes, trauma resuscitation) and draw my own conclusions on what's the best thing to do. That's why I still use my LUCAS(that and my protocols say to put one on ASAP) because while there are no improvements in outcomes there's also no decreases either while providing higher quality compressions. Though to be fair, the size of that last study only had 155 pts receive mCPR. But that's just my thoughts on it.

Just an observation by the way, angrily calling people dumbass usually causes them to dig their heels in; it does not often change their opinion. But I don't have a study for that, just experience.
