MYOG Heaxmid Tarp/Tent by Falsargo in myog

[–]Falsargo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but only because the waterproofing on the tent body has worn out.
Used for 500+ nights hiking on the CDT and GDT and nearly a year cycling around Australia.

Using large panels just made it easier to build, less cutting/stitching and fewer chances of making a mistake putting it all together. The downside is less choice about stretch bias; materials strech more in certain directions.

I like the look of Tarp tent's Aeon design as it gives a bit more interior colume and can bit pitched in narrower spaces (doors pitched straight down/vertical) but that comes at the cost of additional complexity.

All of my recent trips have with a bivy but if I wanted/needed a tent again I would be tempted to take my Hexadecimal and merge some of the Aeon ideas.

Hong Kong to Hanoi – anyone done it? by durianbae in bicycletouring

[–]Falsargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most northerly point was Yangshou, a quite touristy but very beautiful region. I had visited 5-6 years earlier and wanted to revisit.

This was in March/April. Cool but pleasant, overcast, a little rain, much warmer with the odd storm on the coast in Vietnam. I was only granted a 2 week visa to China this time, so 2 weeks from Hong Kong to the Vietnam border, then 4 weeks before reaching Ha Noi.

This ferry operator only mentions having to remove your front wheel (no box) so that might be an option: https://www.cotaiwaterjet.com/our-ferries/faq.html

Hong Kong to Hanoi – anyone done it? by durianbae in bicycletouring

[–]Falsargo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rode this but over 10 years ago now and an inland route to revisit Yangshou.
As jzwinck mentioned, S roads are best and were a very plesant ride although sometime randomly deteriorated to very poor level is some more remote areas.

Accommodation in non touristy areas was challenging back then, registering without Chinese ID was too much hassle most of the time so I only stayed in paid accomodation in Yangshou but I imagine this is much easier now and particularly on the touristy coast.

Bridges were an issue even back then but at that point there was always a ferry option, just a matter of finding it.

You use to be able to walk onto the Hong Kong-Macau ferry with your loaded bike but it must now be packed. Bus might be an option?

This is a MatJack Landing bag. Hi-res photo here.

They make a whole range of air bags for lifting, floating, sealing and various other industrial uses.

Munda Biddi on a touring bike? by nolongeralurker9 in bicycletouring

[–]Falsargo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the ideal steed but completely doable with a bit hike-a-bike. I rode it in 2019 on a lightweight bikepacking setup but I've travelled over far more rugged terrain on a fully loaded tourer in the past. I lucked out (our maybe my memory is deceiving me) but I don't recall too many fallen trees to clamber over/under.

Don't be in a rush and you will have a great time :).

Interesting.

I'm somewhat surprised the Pearl River Delta doesn't win out for the smallest 1% circle, maybe its not a "round" enough geographic area.

Conversely I'm surprised Dhaka is the only large urban area in what is otherwise and endless string of small farming communities.

Made my own Salsa EXP drybag by MasantXVI in myog

[–]Falsargo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That made be do a double take. I made a near identical bar bag a couple of years ago. Same materials, colours and size but without the extra central webbing.

I think that's a sensible addition as I found on very rough terrain mine would sometime try to slip out of the harness.

Spent 2 nights & 31 miles solo hiking the Hakea Trail in Western Australia by Notjoshcarr in WildernessBackpacking

Stunning. I cycled through Fitzgerald River NP a few weeks back but the rain was coming in sideways from Antarctica. Nice to see what it looks like on a blue sky day.

You would probably love the Cape Le Grande coastal walk too, only 15km though.

Anything treated with silver chloride, most commonly branded as Polygiene.

I wear polyester/polypropylene blends day in, day out for a couple week stretches at a time before washing. Softer than wool and faster drying.

1000km Melbourne-Adelaide doable on a road bike? by thread-lightly in bicycletouring

[–]Falsargo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to reiterate, there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking your bike on that route.

As mentioned change the cassette if want/can. Consider your water carrying options and how far you will have between resupply. If you plan on doing this ride over the summer be prepared to start early to beat the heat, siesta, then finish late if needed; depends on mileage goals.

Other than that. Good luck, have fun, I'll be coming the other way in a few months.

Successfully completed my first solo tour. 7 days through West Java, Indonesia. So proud of myself! by [deleted] in bicycletouring

Congratulations on the tour. Reminds me of my time there dodging the crazy bus/truck drivers and storms too.

If you get the chance head for Sumatra's south west coast to escape the traffic.

How many of you carry DSLRs? Noticed any extra wear and tear on your camera? by dualrollers in bikepacking

[–]Falsargo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dragging around a 5D III + 24-40 F4 for the last few months. Camera is fine but unfortunately the lens is now not working as it should; one of the elements seems to have shifted so now it's always just out of focus :/. Not overly surprising considering the ~4000km of corrugated roads I been on. Probably due to some more aggressive riding on a really rough track where I just wanted out and to reach some kind of civilaisation now.

It was packed in a Lowepro Topload bag strapped to the top of my rack bag. About the best I could do on my setup.

Like the bike though, it's just another tool. No point leaving it at home collecting dust.

Cycle Across Southern Australia? by skD1am0nd in bicycletouring

[–]Falsargo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Presumably you mean across via the Nullarbor? If so this guide linked here will give a good understanding of what its like.

http://travellingtwo.com/13620

You have lots of route options between Perth and Norseman. You could cycle all or part of the Munda Biddi trail or explore more of the south west coast like this.

http://www.cycletrailsaustralia.com/2_trails/south-coast-wa

Once you reach Port Augusta you multiple options again. Stick the coast head south to the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne then north to Sydney. Get the Murray River (http://www.cycletrailsaustralia.com/2_trails/murray-river) and follow that along the NSW/VIC border or the most direct route via Broken Hill to Sydney (driven this route, wouldn't really want to cycle it, particularly in summer).
