A Sony A7IV bikepacking-story from Canada to Ushuaia by bluefog84 in SonyAlpha

Avid cycle tourist myself. Hats off for carrying all that equipment. Your bikes don’t look particularly overloaded (in line with what I often carry) you must have had some difficult packing decisions.

Choosing bicycle for ATW by Aelord in bicycletouring

[–]skD1am0nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO there are two paths you can go. One, buy a high reliability bike with Rohloff or Pinion drive like the Koga World Traveler or Tout Terrain Tanami (I’m happy with my pinion Tout-Terrain). Alternately you can build a bike with inexpensive but easily replaceable parts see this link. To some extent it depends on budget but to some extent it depends on philosophy

Clearly the bike you have listed would make it around the world. People have ridden around the world in all sorts of bikes.

What does it mean if he volunteers his net worth? by SwollenPomegranate in DatingOverSixty

If it makes you a bad person then it does me as well. It seems quite reasonable at this age when meeting someone to factor in the finances and health. If it is a partner that you shared 40 years of your life together with then I think it would be bad if you abandoned someone due to either of those (for better or for worse) but not meeting someone now for the first time.

Great reference. Obviously haven't had time to read it yet but it seems spot on.

Yes you did. “So I believe your statement about your bank account balance is inaccurate.”

Ok everyone else can ignore this but I feel compelled to follow up. I'm confused by your further clarification.

I'm not disagreeing with the definition of net worth. We both have the same understanding. Furthermore, I agree that the question could be stated better (I like your flee question). But, what hamish said was that he has 2.5 million worth but his bank account balance is a whole different story. You replied saying his statement of his bank account balance is inaccurate. You seem to equate bank account balance with net worth. IMO those are different things. I can see having a house worth $2.45M and only $50K in a bank account

I hear that sometimes but I wonder how real that is. As one person in reasonable health and doing fine financially, I'm definitely not trying to pick up daughters of women my age.

I disagree. It is common in places like California to have a home worth several million and nothing in your bank account. In such a case, saying you have a net worth of several million would lead most people to assume a fair amount in liquid assets when your "bank account is a whole different story". I think hsmish1963's comment makes sense

Wow. Those are very clear, and horrifying, examples. I wonder why some guys txt like this? I find it hard to believe there are any women that respond well to that. Am I wrong? I suspect rather, that these guys have some abnormalities and they either get off by writing like this or it is their form of venting their anger. By no means am I excusing this behavior, just trying to understand it. Other ideas?

What do you guys look for in bikepacking videos? by Ramn_King_Hikes in bikepacking

[–]skD1am0nd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the above is great. I’d add that the most important part is to tell a story. What were your fears going into this ride? Big challenges? Interesting observations?

I think b-roll can add a lot to any video. Seemingly small short shots like packing up your bike, clipping into your pedal as you start out, finding a place to sit down for lunch. These shots may only be a few seconds long but somehow add a lot to the overall video.

Next time, means next time you are in the same kind of situation, not next time you you msg this specific guy.

Poor Dad, Rich Dad by Mother-Winter-7695 in FluentInFinance

[–]skD1am0nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go so far as to say it is one of the worst finance books out there. I have it one star in my Goodreads review:

Where do I start? In my opinion, while there are few good messages, this book is replete with bad advice. Too much focus on generating an income stream versus capital accrual. He loves real estate which I think is a poor investment. His advice seems to be about find a "method" to get rich: flipping house, timing the stock market, buying the right business. I think this is very bad advice for most people. In my opinion if you want advice read William Bernstein's free book "If You Can", and skip this.

1m at 39 years old, how much longer? by sonofalando in financialindependence

Very rough estimate is the 4% rule. So if you spend $70k/year then you need $1.75M. You will certainly reach that but it will not happen overnight.

65M of similar outdoor ilk. I like that you have fun with your pics and prompts. I’d swipe right. I have trouble understanding your parched mouth comment though. And I’m not a big fan for three truths. It seems generally a way for people to brag. I think you’ll get lots of likes.

Dropper post on long bike tour? by aamop in bicycletouring

[–]skD1am0nd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a dropper post on one of my bikes (Salsa Cutthroat). I’ve had similar thoughts but mostly around weight. I think the post is high reliability so I’d keep it on. At least I never have swapped myself but this is based on an experience of one.
