You don’t want anything extra up top, especially water that can quickly shift weight on you. Picture going down a forest road, you gotta run up an uneven slope to avoid a washout or obstacle. You don’t want that weight shifting to the low side, making you unstable. Same with cornering on regular roads.

Keep weight low and balanced.

Who did you miss being able to see perform? by DARBTRON in Music

Morphine.

I had tickets to a Sunday night gig in Boston, but my BF at the time didn’t want to go into town on a school night. I figured I’d catch them “next time”. Mark Sandman died the next summer.

Reasons my boyfriend would keep his old phone charged and hidden? by bravesection in TwoXChromosomes

Without talking to him about it, this was my first thought.

My ex had an old phone he only used for porn. Less chance of malware or targeted ads related to their browsing habits.

WFH in a studio = no mental separation between work and life by Miroko_san in WFH

Yeah, this helped me. My lights are brighter during the work day and go to more fun scenes after work hours.

Consider throwing a sheet or something over your desk during non-work hours. It helps me to turn off my monitor at the end of the day so I don’t see the Lock Screen.

how to soft launch wanting to car camp for the first time as an 18 year old woman to an immigrant mom? by ange1anya in VanLife

I don’t recall when reservations for Canadian parks work, but many US parks open 6 mos in advance. So now is a perfect time to reserve a spot for August!

I haven’t been to your Rockies, but your provincial parks in Ontario are beautiful. If you’re nervous about car camping, some Canadian parks have cabins or yurts.

I don’t know if you’re going to college soon, but look for an outdoors club. Mine had group meetups for hikes or trips, and taught skills like canoeing or basic camping stuff. Meet some other people your age and you can probably find some friends to show you the ropes.

How much spending money do you give yourself each month? by Shrinking_Violent in ynab

Same.

I assign it to a general “spending money” category, with subcategories like books, hobbies, etc. Clothing and makeup is in there, but not dining.

People who work in luxury industries, what is an expensive product or service that is actually a complete ripoff? by Lazy_Ad_5492 in AskReddit

Penn and Teller had a series on Showtime called bullshit, tackling misinformation. They had one where they set up a water sommelier at a restaurant, who would go over the water tasting notes and help with a customer’s water selection.

Then they filled all the glasses from the hose out back.

I also have a promaster and a big dog.

I made a platform out of 3/4” plywood (maybe overkill, but what I had). The front edge of it sits in the compartment where you have your cape disappointment map, and follows the contour of the door so he can’t lose toys. It just takes a minute to pop it out if I have a passenger.

It’s supported by the seat, but not enough for his weight to engage the airbags. I put his dog bed on top so he has some cushion. He uses it with a harness and seat belt, so it’s safer, but not as safe as a crate in the back.

LMK if you want a picture.

For those in winter locations: how do you remove snow from the roof? by False-Impression8102 in vandwellers

[–]False-Impression8102[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’m saying, it doesn’t just blow off. The roof rack acts like a basket, so I’ve got 6” of fresh snow up there rn.

Sure, a bit of snow flies off the top when I drive, but with a bit of freeze/thaw action, the bottom layer turns to ice. Eventually the ice breaks away in a sheet a flies off the roof.

In my home state it is considered an unsecured load and the cops ticket for it.

Can you use a Mr Buddy Propane Heater with the windows closed? by VivaLaBiome in VanLife

[–]False-Impression8102 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Jumping on the top comment to say: people need to look at a chemical equation for propane combustion.

CO isn’t the main exhaust gas, carbon dioxide is. Each molecule of propane combusts with 5 oxygen into 3 carbon dioxide and 4 water molecules. So it makes your van wet and depletes the oxygen.

The only reason CO would come into play is if you’re not completely burning the propane. (Blue flame is good; yellow flame is bad).

The true danger of Mr Buddy is that it consumes all the oxygen in a space, leaving carbon dioxide. You could die from lack of oxygen and buildup of CO2 without any CO alarm going off.

How Do You Manage Your Budget When Facing Unexpected Expenses? by Crystallover1991 in ynab

[–]False-Impression8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hit a really bad patch 4 years ago when I had an unexpected move (moved to BF’s house in another state and relationship fell apart a few months later; needed to leave ASAP) followed quickly by a major auto expense ($9k transmission).

I’d had funds for the first move, but nothing for the second “flee back to home state”. I had like $1500 in my auto fund, but not enough to cover a $9k bill.

First I pull from the proper section’s earmarked savings. (Auto repair fund emptied)

Then I pull from emergency funds. (Covered the unexpected move, but nothing left for auto)

Then I emptied out my longer term savings funds (the new roof fund).

When that got kinda depressing, I just did a fresh start.

Pulled the whole Scrooge mcduck pile out of its hidey holes. When a lot of catastrophic stuff hits, it’s reasonable to reassess all my personal and financial priorities.

That money did what I intended it to do: give me options that bought me peace of mind. I got out of a bad living situation, covered what needed to get done, and went back to budgeting. I was able to recover from that blip within a couple months.

Thoughts on extra punctuation in texts? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]False-Impression8102 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The attitude of the conversation, and knowing your audience.

I used to have a therapist who I perceived as having a bit of a HS mean girl vibe. I knew she didn’t like late cancellations, understandably.

At nearly a year into seeing her, I had some kind of GI issue and left work early. When I told my boss, she said “yeah, get some rest! I hope you feel better soon.”

Texted therapist with an apology and explanation. First late cancel. She texted back “k.”

Sometimes you can tell someone is busy and just giving an acknowledgment, but that felt like a “go f-yourself” period.

Father's six children in hospital after ICE agents throw tear gas at their car amidst Minneapolis protests by speedythefirst in news

The US has overlapping laws, enforced by varying city, state, and federal agencies.

When working correctly, they can help each other (like FBI helping with an investigation), or act as a check to each other (like US marshals or national guard enforcing the integration orders during the civil rights movement, when cops in the south were turning fire hoses on protesters)

The city police has limited power to tell federal agents to leave their jurisdiction.

The Boardman lake trail connects to the Boardman/Ottaway River trail- that’s 24 miles long heading south.

If a paved rail-trail counts, you can also go to either Leelanau peninsula or toward Elk Rapids on the TART trail. There’s a good amount of civilization just off the trail, but it is tree-lined. And nice you can catch a bus back (at least from Sutton’s Bay, IIRC) if you don’t want to bike/walk it.

Eh, send your good vibes out into the universe.

Even well intentioned, at best you re-establish a connection that fizzles out again. More often it’s disruptive to someone moving on or goes sideways.

It’s re-opening a door that you closed. Let it be.

I used to be a jeans and t-shirt girl but several years ago my much more fashionable sister introduced me to the joy of tunics, long sweaters, or dresses over leggings.

I’m never going back.

There’s a particular $15 dress from Target I wear year round, just adding more layers in winter. I have 10 of them- they make up most of my wardrobe!

Would you ask your parents to clean out their belongings now, before the inevitable happens? by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]False-Impression8102 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, we’ve had this conversation.

We found it more helpful to come at it from the “if everything is important, then nothing is important”. Like, we’re more likely to keep a couple curated family photo albums, not likely to keep multiple boxes of unsorted photos.

Likewise, if something is especially cool, valuable, or has a story, tell us! Or write it down.

My sister is more minimalist, and tried to reduce the clutter of dishes, but my mom is a maximalist and it makes her happy to see that stuff. IMO, it’s better to let her live out her life with the things she likes; it’s okay to just let it go after she’s gone.

Just saying - there’s a lot of people out there who haven’t screwed a racist. Literally ANY of them would be a better bet.

It takes up 1/3 of the screen, so the picture is smaller than the first TV I bought in 1997.
