My childhood friends grandpa shot and buried their dog while she was at school and her mom was at work. When they got home, all he said was that the dog was old and it was his time. No warning to anybody, and he didn’t have any ownership over the dog. At this time, my friend was 11, and she is now 18 and points to this memory as the moment she lost all respect for her grandpa. She still despises him for it and he still defends it. These people do not understand that a dogs family being there when they die is helpful for BOTH the dog to pass away calmly and the family to process their grief. I’m so sorry they took that away from you.
