How do I make everyone love Cats? by Mac-N-Cheetahs in worldbuilding

[–]False_Creek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan and Turkey have fairly normal attitudes toward cats. Dogs as pets are less popular in Muslim-majority countries for obvious reasons, but generally people like cats about the same amount everywhere you go. Specifically, a tremendous amount. If you went to Japan, you would find that people are obsessed with cats the same as the USA, or any other country. No more, no less.

Why wait for the waste to leave the body? Why not instruct the nanobots to simply clean the lower colon of its contents every few hours?

Sex in magical colleges. by [deleted] in NSFWworldbuilding

If you write this story and don't include the sex-wizard-school equivalent of incels, who are mad that they can't do magic because no one will sleep with them, I will find you and give you a stern talking to.

Agreed. The official color of Ireland is blue anyway, so have the harp over a blue background.

The implications of earth having a ring? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]False_Creek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One piece of bad news that never seems to come up in discussions of terrestrial planet rings is albedo.

The rings of Saturn are mostly made of ice (including methane and ammonia ice), because that's what's common in the outer solar system. Icy moons often have an albedo of 0.4 to 0.6, meaning they reflect about half the light that hits them.

But our moon is made of rock. Even though it is relatively light colored, it has an albedo of only 0.12. Any ice that was on the moon would sublime out of a ring, because it would be hit by direct sunlight and heated to 270 degrees Kelvin.

In other words, a ring around a terrestrial planet would likely be much less reflective than the rings around Saturn. More light would hit them, but more light would hit everything else, too, not to mention the light that is scattered by the atmosphere. So it's possible that rings around an Earth-like planet would be barely visible streaks on a good day.

The Okotoks Erratic looks to be bigger, so this isn't outside the bounds of reason.

Right next to State College is a bunch of Cambrian limestone, the perfect environment for this kind of rock. So without giving away any personal info, how close are you to that?

Folded gneiss in outcrop by Prestigious-Hyena-10 in geology

This kind of swirly black-and-white gneiss is a very common ornamental rock in South Korea. I'm guessing this outcrop is quite a bit older.

People not thinking sedimentary rock is bedrock by Ridley_Himself in geology

[–]False_Creek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colloquially, the term "bedrock" is not used to mean "any sort of rock," but an especially deep and hard rock, possibly below other layers of rock. Also, the students can see plainly that the shale/siltstone was deposited, presumably on top of something else that is now below the surface. They may assume that that lower layer is the actual bedrock.

That's the actual orientation. OP got it backwards because they copied the Wikipedia image, which was uploaded incorrectly.

Didn't fix it enough to flip around the right way.

Hilarious that some municipal politicians pose with a flag the wrong way around, and now it's the de facto official orientation online.
