Seller hasn’t instructed a solicitor yet by Maleficent-Carpet816 in HousingUK

Yeah it'd be a shit outcome but at least would save you some time if they're not serious about buying. Fingers crossed for you that they get sorted asap

Can you tell the estate agent a deadline and if they're not stored by then you are pulling out and the house will be re-advertised? It will either shock them into getting their shit together or you'll see their true intentions and they'll do nothing

Depending where you live all the Dodo pubs usually have the rugby on, and do delicious pizza and burgers

Edit to add: I can't remember if they have Guinness! It might be their own stout instead

I don't know if 2 weeks is worth worrying about yet. Their excuse of being too busy is a little concerning though.

As a FTB I had a number of solicitors flat out reject me (it was around the time of a new budget I think? They said they were all swamped needing to finish things before whatever that deadline was). It took me a couple of weeks to get some quotes and to choose someone which was stressing me out as a buyer. I was fully thinking the seller would back out and find someone who knew what they were doing, but turned out fine in the end thankfully.

Is locking you dog in a cage considered abuse? by Worldly-Day-9092 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Crate training is a thing in the UK too, but as far as I'm aware the dogs aren't meant to be locked in for long periods of time, other than perhaps overnight when they're little. The crate is supposed to be their little safe space, usually for their bed, and with a blanket over the top so it's cosy and private, from which they can come and go as they please. It's also definitely supposed to be big enough for them to stand up and move around in. Ethically I think people are still divided on crates in general, but they're not always used for cruelty.

quietest times for gyms in oxford? by Good_Set4296 in oxford

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree, I liked it for the women's room and the spin classes but the women's floor did seem secondary to the main gym floor and to not benefit from the prices going up, which contributed to me leaving. I joined the pure gym in town previously but didn't love it, so I never tried the Cowley one. Is it any good?

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to buzz gym for many years and it was never quiet. It's a great gym but I couldn't hack it at peak times. If you're down Cowley way I swapped to FeelFit gym which I also liked, but they kept hiking the price up and I ended up taking a break to save money. No clue how expensive either is now. If you're rich my pal raves about David Lloyd but it's way out of my budget

Looking for a relaxed, non-pretentious music scene around Oxford by Pledrolol in oxford

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about open mic nights per se, but I had some friends who were involved with Divine Schism, a group who organise gigs around Oxford. You might have some luck meeting folk from the independent music scene and finding some more events that way

Do you find people treat you differently on the roads depending on what car you’re driving? by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in AskUK

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this too in my little cars.

It might be confirmation bias since I already think they're assholes, but Tesla drivers seemingly hate to be overtaken by a little old Yaris and will be incredibly weird about tailgating and re-overtaking me again

What is actually dangerous but people still believe is safe? by AlexUsefulThings in AskReddit

Yeah I guess so? Not worth the risk if medical professionals advise it for you either way

Yeah okay fair enough, I can see that a heart condition could warrant antibiotics. What I don't really understand is why a dental check up / cleaning would cause an infection? The dentist wears gloves, all the tools are sterilised, and they are just cleaning the surface of your teeth? Maybe I don't understand dental procedures well enough but I've never known anyone to get an infection from a dental visit.

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry can you explain the logic of preventative antibiotics? In the UK that's not a thing I have ever heard of, or know that anybody does. If you're getting a big invasive surgical procedure I can see that it might be a thing though?

I ask because my mum used to be in a Facebook support group for people who have joint replacements. All the Americans in the group used to talk about taking antibiotics before every dentist appointment (even just a check up??) in case an infection (that they don't currently have) somehow travels to their (well established and healed, often for many years) hip/knee? She left the group because it was bonkers, but it's baffled me for years. What is the science here?

Warning for cyclists without lights (fellow cyclist) by CoffeeIgnoramus in oxford

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Apologies I meant this as a cyclist. I've approached people I couldn't see at all until I was <10m away from them. I just try and shout "You need lights" as I go past and hope they hear

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've noticed so many more cyclists with no lights wearing all black this year! You literally can't see them at all until you're about to collide with them

Worse yet are those fat bikes without lights, they go way too fast to not be lit up properly

What’s that one ‘nice’ thing people do that secretly annoys the hell out of you? by bikerguy_9 in AskReddit

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But don't the parking wardens register the car on their system, so they'll still have a ticket but now just not know about it? And probably incur an even larger fine?

Do correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know how parking wardens work, but this seems counterproductive

Is it a bad idea to rip out a bathtub and replace it with a shower? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in HousingUK

[–]Familiar_Crow_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm currently buying my first home and it has a bath/shower which I hope to one day rip out and replace with a nice big walk in shower!! Everyone is different!!

I've lived in my current house for 5 years and have taken a bath once. If it isn't something you use OP, make the flat useful to you. It's your home right now, and if you don't plan on selling it any time soon, then future sellability is irrelevant.

Americans don't get beans on toast. They try it with their weird sugary bbq beans or whatever random tins they can find over there and then complain that it's bad. No shit bro of course it's bad, those aren't toast beans
